What was Prince's Coolest Period?

Just watching the "Face Down" clip from the Chris Rock show for the first time. The ultimate in cool. Just lying there like he'd dead at the end. Ice cold cool.

And he was introduced as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince."

Who else could get away with such stuff?

Nobody.

When Prince was in his "Slave" mode he was the ultimate in cool. I'm not saying musically at his best, or most popular, or anything like that.

But, just "cool" like he was definitely doing his own thing. Basically kissing his audience goodbye.

Too cool.

So, I'd say Prince was at his absolute coolest during his <+)0 days, or even moreso at the beginning of his slave days.

Y'all???

the performance of Dolphin on the David Letterman show is halirious as well. Letterman is on his way over near the end of the song for a few words, but P is simply dragged of the stage as if he is dead lol
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

For me, his coolest period was dirtymind/controversy/1999 (Uh, can I make that one period?). It seemed kinda nasty and in your face. That is the epitome of Prince doing his own thang. And that attitude is cool to me.

For me, his "Coolest Period" would have been just prior to the release of "Controversy". It was the time when he had already freaked the world out with "Dirty Mind", but had not reached Super-Duper Stardom just yet. Those of us who knew of him were firmly planted on his nutsack, and The 80's still held the promise of endless posibilities. I remember the buzz around "Controversy" was enormous, and Prince was poised to rape the music industry.

Ya know, there we both were, at the same time, posting about the same Prince "cool" period, starting our posts with the same five words, yet with each totally unaware of each other, or what the other was saying at the time. What's THAT all about?

After it was released, how was the reception? As someone mentioned his coolest period is definitely spans from DM-1999

Fans were Hyped, but the non-believers were only further frightened by the imagery and content that Prince was promoting. With the release of "Controversy", there were many more people who were convinced that Prince was The Anti-Christ.

i love most of them, really. but especially 80-83 early funk-rock-pop stage with all the dirty lyrics and sounds before it got watered-down just a tiny bit for purple rain and completely transformed after that and 87 or so when he was incorporating everything he had done before into his finest work (imo), sign o the times.

controversy, 1999 was still cool but the edwardian/purple thing surfaced and established a "uniformity" that blew up with purple rain. the trenchcoat look was kinda thuggusih and easily accessible to his audience.

In the 80s, it was around the Controversy/1999 period (before 1999 took off on the pop charts). In the 90s, it was THE/Exodus period. There were LOTS of cool songs written in those times.

Fist one must define cool.

For me, in Prince world cool means how smooth you look in what you're wearing and your general swagger. It's a swagger that says that nobody can touch you unless you want them to.

In that respect, I would have to say that for me Princes coolest period was Parade. That muthahfukah looked cool as hell then with his suits and all. All showman then, no guitar playin, just cool pimpin in a suit with slicked back hair. He was a cool motherfucker at that time.

Controversy & Parade.

Since then the One Nite Alone period just before he went famous was cool. I'd waited years for Prince to give up being a pop star and he did there for a little while.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
