The version I have on vid is the Chris Rock one, I think, where he wears a light brown coat. And where did the remixes appear from, as I dont seem to have them either, all info greatly appreciated it was done on january 11th 1997 at the roseland ballroom. the live version complete is circulating, prince took the intro of jam of the year and sliced it 2gether with face down in edited form. if u have seen the somebody's somebody video, when prince is in a lime green outfit with the one eyed bass, that's him doing face down. the chris rock show per4mance is lip synched from this concert man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The lyric, "you gotta be a Prince before you're King anyway" as well as some other references makes me think he's slammin' MJ in some way (wasn't Mike married to Lisa Marie - Elvis' daughter - during this time frame???)...
I forget the other lyrics that make me think that, and I think I got the one I quoted correct... but, take a listen and see what you think.... Anyone? that lyric you quoted is from "my name is prince" not face down, if Im not mistaken. And it is a pop at MJ who thinks he is king of pop Oops! My bad. yeah... that's what I thought. |

I totally love this song. I saw the performance he did on the Chris Rock show. He was very aggressive and displayed a lot of attitude. That shit was tight. Wish I had the NY version u guy’s talk about

I love that song! I saw the "Jam of the Year" tour (and subsequent shows) 11 times!!
During that time, I freaked every time I heard that song! I once bribed the guard (NJ: PNC Bank Arts Center,'97) into letting me go down to the stage for the bass solo (left speaker, 7th song in the set! ) because I bought a giant ACE card from "Party City", and when Prince said, "Next time U pull a card it better be an ace..." I stuck it up in his face! Prince just looked down and smirked! Okay, okay, I was younger, and still famming out... now I'd anyone I caught doing that! Also, a friend of mine "collects music" , so for my 30th birthday, he made me a tape called "Face Down at 30" with live versions of the song from the "Jam of the Year" tour all over the country. Some of them were really hot! I think my fave was Moline. Oh! and I was at the NYC show... [Edited 12/11/07 18:15pm] "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. just watched the video (which is hilarious and one of his coolest, imo) and the chris rock performance. who knew prince was such a "thug". always loved this song. making fun of/emulating "gangster rap" and just kind of having fun being a smart ass. i like this side of him. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I like the way he did it on the Chris Rock Show. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

One of Prince's few angry sounding songs. I like Face Down alot. Always have since I bought Emancipation back in 1996. Face Down caught my attention immediately. I love the "dead like Elvis sample." I love how he calls out the instruments he wants to hear HORN! BASS! ORCHESTRA! Face Down was one of Prince's better attempts at making a decent rap song. The song is menacing, bitter and theatrical but is never over the top and silly. I saw the Chris Rock performance too along time ago. Saw it again recently thank god for youtube and the internet!!! It was good I like when he plays the horn riff on the piano and gives it that funky honky tonk sound. I'm guessing he probably wrote this during the Chaos and Disorder sessions, it just seems to fit the unhappy, bitter, and angry mood he was in then.

True, I was never really sure why it ended up on emancipation, apart from the fact that he had set himself free, but somehow it does not really fit into the vibe of emancipation If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

True, I was never really sure why it ended up on emancipation, apart from the fact that he had set himself free, but somehow it does not really fit into the vibe of emancipation It wasn't about the vibe. It was about being free from WB and letting them KNOW that he was NOT dead and in fact very ALIVE.
