I totally agree with this statement. C.R. doesn't seem to fit in between All The Midnights and Lion Of Judah. C.R. would be more appropriate for the flow of the album if it were after Mr. Goodnight.

It would definately be "Mr. Goodnight". It is shit hop sounding and I hate and despise anything that even slightly resembles shit hop. On the "3121" album it was "Incense and Candles" that was the shit hop sounding track that needed to go also. Enough of the shit hop already.

What do you think the one song "Planet Earth" could do without?

I'm back to listening to it after a hiatus of quite awhile.

I'm surprised. I still like it.

However whenever I get to "Chelsea Rodgers" I skip through it.

I even listen to "Planet Earth" which at first I found much too syrupy, but now just kind of dig it.

So, I say it'd be better without "Chelsea Rodgers;" I just don't understand it -- it's a song about a model? She's a role model? No? Just don't get into it.

So which song should be removed from the pleasurable listening experience that is "Planet Earth?"

All the Midnights in the World is the only one I'd pick to remove.

This is an interesting topic because I am a PE hater, and its not easy to think of the song you would want to leave out when you pretty much hate them all...

oh well, in terms of style - its true that CR doesnt fit in. MrGoodnight also sounds too "polished" for this record as well. Really, if the record had the following songs in this order

Planet Earth
Guitar
The one you wanna see
FBM
All the midnights
Lion of Judah
Resolution

then a few other guitar based tracks, the songs are still crap, but at least there is some sort of flow, some type of theme which puts you in the mood.. For all the horrors of TRC, at least that record is thematically consistent, and is therefore miles better than PE. So really for me its a toss up between the following..

SHOE - horrendous, horrendous song
Chelsea Rodgers - boring, repetitive, unintersting, low quality sound.
Mr Goodnight - clumbsy, childish, pointless
(possible FBM) - OK, until he starts talking in the middle.

....

the winner is SHOE - an absolutely horrible song.

Prince is like Robert De Nero, his career started off brilliantly, could do no wrong, everything he did was perfection, chose the best roles and was critically acclaimed.. and then one day he started making comedies, and meet the parents.. and no one cares about him anymore.. oh well..

As someone already mentioned, I'm not a fan of the "Planet Earth" CD. The first time I played it, I hated the title track. That's the main song I wish he'd left off the CD. In fact the only ones I even like a little are "Somewhere Here on Earth" and "The One U Wanna See". neutral

all of the r&b/soul/funk songs. as much as i like several of them, i wish he'd comit to a theme. i know that what made Prince's classic albums great is their eclectic nature. but those days are over. he's too all over the place. Planet Earth could have been a kick-ass pop rock record. and he could have saved the other stuff for a different project. or made it a double album.

There are a few problems with it.

The intro with that "old" record scratching sample is SOOO cheesy. The song writing is too formulaic, simplistic (but he turns it around to try and sound complex - well its not). The strings are lush - but too lush, OTT in fact. I know Prince put his heart and soul in this song, but I think he put TOO much in it. Its overdone, overproduced and musically (for me) not that interesting. Its almost like he wanted to make Adore again, but he failed big time! Lyrically, its poor and down there (in terms of embarrassmnet with Mr.Goodnight + Resolution).

We are all looking for a reason to like PE, and lots of people are trying to say that SHOE is good, but I think if there is anything consistent about PE, its how consistently bad the songs and lyrics are.. Oh how I miss the simplicity and power of 1999/DM/Purple Rain...

Wow... the truth hurts sad

But I still don't believe it. It's okay, though. Hey, if we all loved all of Prince's music, other musicians would be out of a job, haha. So it's okay if we don't like the same things.

But here... Somewhere here on Earth is beautiful. And the lyrics don't bother me very much throughout the whole album. Prince has a mouth full of raisinettes in one song and I still like him all the same wink
I liked this song because it was unique. I haven't heard him do anything like it before. The whole record-scratch at the beginning, it kinda shows how Prince is an old soul and has been for sometime. Now, I think his body and has caught up with it, so he's able to churn out something with class and sophistication. "In this digital age, you can just page me..." cheesy as it is, I like it cool

And I'm not looking for a reason to like PE unlike the majority. There's enough I like about it already. If anything, I find more things to like whenever I listen to it. And certain songs I didn't care too much for at first... I like them more. The One u wanna c, Chelsea Rodgers, even Lion of Judah, which I didnt get for the longest time cuz of the religious reference... all perfect examples. At one time, when Guitar wasn't doing it for me, The One u wanna c did well.

The album flows with all of the songs working together, so I still say its good as is.

One more thing... you can never put TOO MUCH of your heart and soul into a song... and if Prince did that, I'm not sure if he'd have the energy to finish the rest of the album giggle or write anything else for quite a while.

mr. goodnight SUX.
everybody knows it.

it just doesn't fit on the cd- everything else is fairly raw and acoustic- and then it's prince talk/rap time over a plastic drum beat. YECH!

i still really like planet earth, especially the title track. the ending is orgasmic, like the end of purple rain. although not as good, of course.
if you could just pass your history class, baby, life would be all right.

I'm grateful to have heard all of it, even if there are a few tracks I'm not crazy about. What I will say is that I'm happy to see that "Lion of Judah" isn't such the source of derision it was at the time of the album's release. I cling to that as one of the best songs of the year. cool

yeah, I think thats the one song that hasn't been picked on much here. Only one person put it on da block giggle

Pretty amazing, though. I'll admit there is something about this song that's unique and makes it stand out from the rest. It still has me stratching my head, trying to figure out the Bible reference and what it has to do with him and some of the lyrics still allude me. I just love a good mystery, though.
My favorite part would have to be the back-up vocals he has on this song.

And it probably took me the longest to like at all cuz I didnt understand it. Cryptic lyrics... now that's something I heart on a good Prince album cool
