Prince's Airplay

Yes, damn it! I love a good conspiracy theory, so here's another...

For the last several weeks, I've heard more Prince songs on the radio than I've ever heard before with the exception of listening to Mojo, special Prince music weekends or internet radio.

So much so that my husband who's not much of a fan even commented on it this morning as we were listening to "Pop Life" while driving to our studio. His words were, "Dang, honey, now that you're mad at Prince, they've just started playing much more of his music, haven't they?" and it made me think...

What if this whole protecting his copyright from the bad people on the internet is really just a ruse set up by the music and radio companies? What if they got Prince or someone in his camp to join in this internet fight in exchange for more airplay of Prince's music? hmmm

This is a plausible theory and should NOT be discounted.

I also think that it ties in somehow to his closeted homosexuality--not that there is anything wrong with that--but that it complicates the matter a wee bit. Also, his dying his hair black or wearing wigs from time to time to prove his religious beliefs that time is a trick. There's alot of very deep and profound truths that circle around Prince.
He will forever remain interesting , even if a slight bit unpredictable.

I have noticed it too. Tom Joyner has played Soft and Wet, Baby I'm a Star, and Adore in the past week. I'm starting to get curious....it definitely beats a blank, but I 'don't think it will change my mind about his Airplay. He's been blacklisted.

I haven't listened to Tom Joyner lately cuz it's a lot of static, and I don't like to listen online. However that is nice of the program to play a lot of Prince.

i gotta agree on that. they'll play kiss until the sky truly becomes purple but when a new song from the next CD is played regularly, then i'll start wondering.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I don't know. They never seem to have any problem playing his music on the NYC radio stations. I can walk into a supermarket or a store in the mall who have their radio stations on and there is always a Prince song playing. Then you have the Long Island, NY stations that will play the more pop versions of his songs like "Kiss,"Raspberry Beret" or "Little Red Corvette."

As a matter of fact 98.7Kissfm in NYC plays at least 2 of his songs daily without a miss, and sometimes have a lunch hour special of Prince music from time to time. They've been playing his music since the Musicology tour. They basically played Call My Name from 2004 - 2005 like an anthem.

They always play "I Wanna Be Your Lover" like a daily anthem for the past several years on 98.7Kissfm. Sometimes they play songs like "Adore" or "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" and "Do Me Baby." Usually you will hear his songs before 3 pm daily. Would be nice to hear songs from the 3121 album played, like "Love" and "Incense and Candles". Apparently the DJs or if that's what they still call them today, seem to love playing his music, which is no problem quite frankly with me, so Prince's music is still alive and well in NYC even if they are mainly playing the classics.

I have to say also, that BET J plays a lot of his videos as well, as I've seen the Fury video on there quite a few times. I also saw "Somebody's Somebody" on there for the first time.

Hi 2elijah wave
They have been playing a lot of Prince here in NYC and the times I've listened to the radio, it's been wonderful. Kiss FM has been the best with his music and I caught the last half hour of a lunchtime Prince marathon. NYC been doing great with playing his stuff.

wave Hey there! Very true, you can always find Prince music on the airwaves here in NYC, even if it's not the new stuff, but you have to admit they keep his music alive here. I love it when they plays :Adore". Plus if you email the DJ on air about playing some Prince jams, often times they'll play it. Keisha is the on air DJ that mostly plays his songs. She's also does the Prince camp marathons, like artists associate with Prince back in the 80s/90s - Sheila E, Jesse Johnson, Morris Day and then some.

Another station which is more geared toward the Long Island, NY area named WKTU plays a couple of his classics.

I remember sometime in August, I was on my way to Pennsylvania in my sis' car and we were listening to 105.1, another NY station and they did a lunchtime jam which included "hot thang" by Prince. I was surprised to hear it on the radio. So yes, Prince's music is alive and well in NYC, no short supply really and it always sounds like it just came out yesterday.

Dang! I almost forgot about this thread. At first glance I thought I'd been hacked! eek

Anyhoo, I must say that in Detroit after Mojo left the airwaves for good, finding a Prince song on the radio was indeed a treat. Especially songs like...Automatic...Computer Blue...LRC Extended Dance Mix...As Long As We're Together... but recently that does appear to have changed.

Though it is primarily the classic stuff more so than any of his new stuff but hell, I'll be honest here, IMVHO, the classic stuff IS musically speaking much better than his new stuff. shrug

I just find the timing quite interesting. hmmm

Kiss FM is awesome! I enjoy listening to it every time I drive through Buffalo.

Radio Stations in RI are too addicted to Beyonce, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and all those other people to play Prince. Though, right around Christmas Day they start playing Another Lonely Christmas like crazy.

With Prince, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a publicity stunt. Yet, I have to agree with those that believe his current work should be on the airwaves.

I fell over backwards when I heard Black Sweat in Old Navy. I was in one of the grocery stores and they were playing Diamonds and Pearls.

I was listening to 102.3FM (DC) the other day for the music they play during the Traffic Jam - they played Let's Work and I got so excited. I was surprised it wasn't Kiss...

Well you know SBO, there used to be an ongoing official thread called "I heard Prince at...t" (or something titled like that) on the NPGMC forum, so everytime someone heard one of his songs anywhere (tv,store, movie, etc.) they would keep adding on to that thread, wherever they heard it. Maybe we'll use your thread to keep adding on.. lol

By the way, I was watching an old show of "Martin" the other night, and Martin brought Gina a VHS movie of "Purple Rain" to watch...what can I say... Prince just seems to be everywhere..and then some.

That's just about the only station I'll listen to while at work. Here's the online link to WKRS 98.7Kiss fm in NY. My co-worker usually has Keisha Monk's show playing from 10 am - 3pm.

True, seems everywhere you go you hear a Prince song somewhere. But I remember, when Prince sang a cover of the Beatles "Long and Winding Road" in Vegas, which he sung very nicely I might add (sure would be nice if they played a live version of that from one of the Vegas shows on Jam of the Week one of these days..I mean I'm just sayin' that's all..just sayin' innocentbatting eyeswhistle ..) but anyway, I heard the actual song by the Beatles played in a clothing store in Manhattan, on my lunch hour, and realized how beautiful that song is. I know it's not a Prince song, but it did remind me of when he sang it as a cover in Vegas when I heard it.

What's even more surprising, imo:everytime they announce he's gonna release
a new album they play Cream,Kiss or some other classic.
At least on some radiostations in my country.
One time ,when PE was allready in the stores, they said it was a good record
and the listeners should check it out, then played...Cream! eek
