The music still sounds fresh (even though the production leaves a little to be desired) It's maybe his best collection of songs. Nearly every one is a classic in its own way. And for those that want the daring Prince, Prince was never more daring. The songs stretched out forever, but they didn't get dull. The rock was at it's best, the funk was at its best, the pop was at it's best. Prince's music got more interesting, but it might not have ever gotten better than on 1999. It was a pretty straight up party record. He could use to do another. Christian Zombie Vampires

I really have to think of all his albums to realise what you're talking about! Each and everytime It just makes it easier to reference! Normally when you see intitials, it's for an album...though some like to do it for songs and that just drives me crazy...except for ICNTTPOYM...that one I can understand. Be happy you are not a Pet Shop Boys fan! All of them DO reference most of the songs by initials only, which is easier that writing some of them out (as some song titles are really long) but it makes it SOOOO confusing. What's also interesting is that all of their albums are one word, so one can't use initials for the albums. Christian Zombie Vampires

I might have mentioned this a few times already...
when I got this album and I heard it the first time, I was so glad that I didn't have the Internet to banter on about how much I didn't like this album. No joke, it was almost "alien" sounding in places when I heard it the first time. Its length probably wore me out... TGE was no easy ride either, but I think this album was the one I worked with for the longest time before I started liking/enjoying it at all. It took me about 8 listens before I started saying "Wow"... Lady Cab Driver, I just didnt get (now I totally dig it)... DMSR, one of those universally liked Prince songs... I still don't get that one... too long and just ugh... ...by taking out that song, the ride runs a little more smoothly. International Lover might have thrown me for a loop the first time... now it just makes me laugh. The music itself goes in so many different directions, but it all fits so well together... it just does. More variety and longer than Purple Rain, but in some ways, it is better. That hard work paid off, though... cuz its one of my favorite 6 albums. My favorite tracks are Little Red Corvette (one of my firsts, actually), Automatic and Let's Pretend We're Married (not just for the swearing, but also for the keyboards) had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

1999 is his BEST. I love it so much. Every song just hits hard. It is years ahead of its time. Even now.
Every track is pure gold, no skips for this one.

I'd say it's not only his best album, but the best album I've ever heard. You're free to dislike it, but the truth is that 1999 is arguably his most influential and one of his most innovative albums. It was the last album Prince made when he was a virtual unknown to the mainstream, hungry for success, and it showed. 1999 is a one-man tour de force, and Prince is playing ALL of his high cards here. It's the most awe-inspiring display of one man's talent I have ever had the pleasure to hear, and yes, I have heard Stevie Wonder's albums. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Back then Prince seemed so witty, and while we know he still can be, he struggles with his lyrics. My Legacy

In the words of the great Alan Leeds:
The 1999 album and tour excitingly took Prince from being a “niche” artist into a dynamo who could write brilliant songs, out perform just about every rival and sell out arenas. The sense of awestruck “discovery” in the audiences and the enthusiasm among the cast and crew was among my most stimulating career experiences.
