My Prince Music Challenge 4 U ... challenge you to go back to when you had that burning passion. The burning passion of the 1st. I'm speaking of the 1st time you heard Prince.
No, I take that back, the 1st time you fell "in love" with [what I define as] a musical genius. From my point of view, I feel [and have felt] since 1996 that Prince is a musical genius. So my challenge to you is to go back and listen to that 1st album, that 1st song, that part of yourself that was "touched" when you heard the musical genius of Prince [touch you] ... When I say "touch" you I mean you either had tears in your eyes or you cried or you got chills. When the song was over you put that same song back on or you put the album on repeat. That is my challenge to you. Get back to me when you've done that and tell me how you felt when you had that "feeling" ... Thank you for your time and have a great day ... Peace ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Actually I listend to the song that really got me into Prince a few days ago. That song is "Adore". I used to have that song on repeat and play it over and over again when I was younger. I was good to play it again cuz I haven't in a while.
Also "When You Were Mine" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" were big heavy repeaters when I was a kid. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

That would have to be "Let's Pretend We're Married" from 1999. For one main reason - the little electro-crack on the 3 (Linn drum reference) was the most erotic sounding thing I'd ever heard. Besides the fact that 1999 was just so "nasty" to me (I was 17 at the time). I would play that song at least three times a day. At LEAST. I tended to ditch my first period class just to dig on Prince/camp tunes during my senior year in high school after this.
This is the list of songs that have gone on heavy-rotation (in order of first hearing them): Computer Blue Let's Pretend We're Married Partyup Irresistable Bitch Dance On She's Always In My Hair Electric Chair Billy Jack Bitch All the Critics... Hide the Bone Prettyman Rope Of Silicon 1+1+1=3 Black Sweat (sorta) Guitar (sorta)

My earliest memory of Prince at all where I knew that I liked his music.
My dad made a mix CD of his favorite songs from his days in high school, college and so on. He had the following songs on it: Dancin' on the Ceiling, All night long (Lionel Richie) Black Magic Woman (forget who does it) Flashdance (What a feeling) Disco Inferno Born in the USA, Born 2 Run (Bruce Springsteen) White Wedding (Billy Idol) Paradies by the Dashboard Light (Meatloaf) Stairway to Heaven I Would Die 4 U & Baby I'm a Star were the last 2. When I heard "I would Die 4 U" the first time... it was a very groovy 80's beat. The combination of musical effects was unlike anything I've heard before. I don't think I really paid attention to the lyrics, haha. I liked his voice, but the sound of the music was incredible. So much in fact that I hated for it to end... Baby I'm a Star, I just understand as the song that continued from where the previous left off. In the beginning, I can still remember the keyboards "singing" 'I would Die 4 U'... I didn't really care about the words, his screaming was annoying and I was just dying for it to end. Quite honestly, I didnt like that song very much at all. I preferred "I Would Die 4 U" 10-fold... My dad made this all the way back when we got our first CD burner (not part of the computer) and it fried a little while after he made this. If I remember correctly, he made this mix a couple of years b4 I saw the movie. He told me how the songs continued one into the other... When I saw that 2nd half of the movie that we stumbled across, I could only remember certain scenes scattered. All I could remember was my dad explaining to me how The Kid's dad said he never wrote music down when he found that stack of sheet music in the basement. And I also remember him saying how he would only play the music he wrote. I saw so much more in him as I watched those scenes, how he lived for the music and the dedication he had. Seeing him do those last two songs was ultimately what made him an interest of mine. I saw him work the stage, dance around, sing... being Prince... and the "Baby I'm a Star" portion just had me memorized... I can't even describe what it felt like... but I knew that Prince was special @ that moment. It took me another two years or so to get me here but I'll never forget those 2 songs and the world they opened up for me. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

2b fair, though, I've had a lot of those moments that just kept building on top of one another for the first couple of moments I was here. Just got deeper and deeper into this world, in the beginning, it seemed like I became more with Prince and his music with each new song I uncovered. The first time I heard "Gold" The first time I saw the entirity of "Purple Rain" ...not music related, but the first interview I ever saw... [those are a couple of more memorable "Firsts" for me that had me captivated by the musical genius, Prince] Every new song and discovery about the man himself to me was like opening up another wonderful gift @ Christmas that I didn't ask 4. I knew I was asking for a lot by "making it official"... but I never foresaw all this happiness coming from one person's gifts. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

3 words...When Doves Cry. I played that at least 4 times a day when I heard it for the first time. I couldn't get over it. The bold sounding guitar solo's, the beat, his vocal delivery, everything in that song is just amazing. However, the thing with Prince is that you have this "touching" experiences more than once just because of his versatility and how well he can do things. After listening to Purple Rain and the Very Best of Prince for a while I went out and got Controversy and Dirty Mind and once again I blown away, caught off guard, mystified by the music. Eventually I would branch out and get just about all of studio releases and be amazed by other songs, but those two moments were really the moments you want us to describe.

from the perspective of a 35 year old, my "moment" would be about 9-10 years earlier. in 1984, the Purple Rain time - I was 12 years old; I was not allowed to see the movie because it was Rated R .I remember liking Pop Life and Mountains and Rasberry Beret, but my deep respect for Prince came between 86 and 87.
listening to Parade, even though Prince is quoted as saying it's not his strongest release - was a treat to me. Parade was the album which brought me out of a stage of just listening to hip hop/ rap. i was at a stage of becoming a gangsta in the hood, and Prince made me appreciate the gentle side of life with songs like Sometimes It Snows In April, I Wonder U and Venus De Milo. When SOTT came out, I saw that Prince was more than a star, but at the age of 15, learned that he was an artist crossing many boundaries. Image source

1st time heard? Two classmates of mine singing 1999... it was truly dreaful. (this was back in 84/85 when Purple Rain hit the UK and 1999 was re-released).
1st time I fell in love - Anotherloverholenyohead. Fabulous, fabulous single. Fabulous, fabulous video. Was on a 'hits' cassette (!) - along with such notories as Paul Young, Don Johnson, The The and Hollywood Beyond - and that was the first time I knew I loved Prince... and the Revolution! After that I went back to all my 'taped off the radio' compilations and Prince stuff was popping up everywhere... must have liked him before, but never loved him.

I remember the first time that I really listened to Prince and realised how amazing he was, was when "Gett Off" and "Cream" were released!
Obviously I knew songs like "1999" and "Kiss" but it was the first time I actually took notice of his music. I remember sitting in my room listening to the whole of the UK Top 40 Countdown waiting for them to be played so I could record them onto tape! I was only 13 years old when these two songs came out (oh, how old do I feel saying that?!) and I think there was also the underlying factor of how rude the songs were and that maybe I shouldn't be listening to them... However, Diamonds and Pearls is still one of my favourite albums and since 1991 I have become more and more obsessed with Prince and his music - the man is a genius and my musical hero!! "I'm so funky I can't even sleep with myself"... Prince 9th September aftershow party
