To me, Prince's albums in the 90's are incredible.

There were so many great songs and albums that I can't seem to get enough.

Thieves In The Temple, The Qustion of U, Still Would Stand All Time, Diamonds and Pearls, Willing and Able, Gett Off, Thunder, Sexy MF, Damn U, 7, Peach, The Pope, Space, Letitgo, Dark, Gold, Dolphin, P Control, 319, The Most Beautiful Girl InThe World, Shy, Jam of The Year, The Holy River, Joint 2 Joint, Emancipation, In This Bed I Scream, Dreamin' About U, My Computer, I Like It There, Zanalee, The Same December, In2 The Light, Girl 6, She Spoke 2 Me, Don't Tallk 2 Strangers, The Good Life, Get Wild, Count The Days, How Ever Much U Want, When U Love Somebody, The One, Come On, New Power Soul, Ackwoledge Me, Days Of Wild, Goodbye, Interactive, So Far So Pleased, Where Ever U Go Whatever U Do, Man O War...just to name a few!

But are they as good as.....

I wanna be your lover, Bambi, When you were mine, Head, Controvery, Do Me baby, Lets work, 1999, Little red corvette, DMSR, How Come U don't call me anymore, When Doves Cry, Lets Go Crazy, Purple Rain, Baby I'm a star, The Beautiful ones, Darling Nikki, I would die 4 u, erotic city, 17 Days, Paisley park, she's always in my hair, Kiss, Girls and Boys, Sign O The times, Shockadelica, Good Love, Housequake, Strange Relationship, The Cross, The Ballad of dorothy parker, U Got The look, Adore, If I was your girlfriend, Bob George, Cindy C, Alphabet Street, Lovesexy, Annastesia, Scandalous, Electric Chair, I love U in Me, Vicki Waiting

Is Girl 6 better than Strange Relationship?

Is Zanalee better than Electric Chair?

??

Maybe a better way to compare the periods is not to look at the strong tracks, but look at the weak ones. Then you get a picture as to the stronger period as a whole.....

Solo, Da Da Da, Arrogance, Daddy pop, Dionne, Push it up, Right the wrong...

or...

Starfish and coffee, take me with you, Dirty Mind, Lady Cab Driver, The Future, Positivity, Raspberry beret, Anotherloverholenyohead, Le Grind.

As a body of work, the 80s was ulimately more solid.

i wish people would finally stop talking about "trow-away albums"
or vault releases that are sub-par.

if those albums were not released and prince released "pheromone"
or "into the light/i will" today on his 3121.com site as outtakes
from that era, people would go absolutely nuts and rave that they
were amongst the best songs he ever recorded.

I think that shows more the poor quality of todays output, rather than the strength of the 90's work.

Any strong track from the 90's sounds better than the majority web site throwaway tracks.

Some of my favorite songs are from the 90's and there is some beautiful work there in the different albums I have.
Exceptional tracks 4 me include:

Diamonds & Pearls: Thunder, Money Don't Matter 2night, Insatiable

prince: The Morning Paper, The Max, Continental, Damn U
Come: Space, Loose!, Letitgo, Dark and Solo (some people don't really get into it... but I think its by far one of the most brilliant things he's ever done, even if it was in sadness).

The Gold Experience: Gold (of course, my all-time favorite!), Shh (another all-time favorite), eye Hate U

NewPower Soul: The One (its worth getting the album for this alone, there's nothing else like it anywhere... thu it could be Te Amo Corazon's predecessor)

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic: The Greatest Romance, Man O' War, eye Love U, but don't trust u anymore, Strange but True (one of the most unique tracks I've heard from him... nothing else like it).

That's among the most brilliant work he's done in the 90's or even ever in some cases (and those are the only 90's albums I own right now... only need one more).
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I agree the 90's had many career highlights in it, but as a body or work, its clearly not a solid, or as cutting edge. The 82-88 period was solid to the core (ok, maybe not "Horny Toad"!).

One of the problems with the 90's material was not the strong song writing, but the unoriginal way it was produced. Many of the sounds were dated or even worse, tried to copy current trends.

As the world moved away from scratching on records, Prince finally introduced it. When the world began to get bored with crap rappers filling out the middle eight in pop records, Prince was only just jumping on board. Prince attempted house music 10 years to late.

Alot of the 80's stuff sounds dated now, but at the time, there was nothing around like it. That couldn't have been said for the catch up 90's or the old school 00's.

I would say that the 90's was 50% good, 50% filler. Where the 80's was more 90/10. Thats the mark of a good body of work.

Another big problem in the 90's was Prince's inhability to self regulate the quality output of his work. We got quantity, not quality. From 94 to 2000, there seeme very little strategy or thought going into choosing the best recordings.

Warner did a good job containing him. Warner wouldn't have let him release the likes of Emancipation and New Power Soul. He would have been forced to consolidate, and that can sometimes be a good thing.

Thank god that Prince got the hell out of that contract(handcuffs)...a fat guy sat behind a desk at warner hasn't got a clue what music is..if he did Prince would never had to battle with them to get Sign of the Time out...

Da Da Da a weak track?...each to their own ...but the lyrics are not 'wannabe' it so not 80's prince that's why it's good cool
Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! London 21 Nights...Clap your hands...you know the rest..

But Warner were behind the pressure that led to SOTT being released in its stripped down form. So you just proved my point.

smile No, Prince wanted 3 discs (Crystal Ball) Warner wanted two (SOTT).

As a hardcore fan I would have been happy with the three discs, but Warners intervention lead to prince consolidating and producing his strongest album.

To me, Prince's albums in the 90's are incredible.

Everything from 1990's "Graffiti Bridge" to 1999's "Rave Unto The Joy fantastic" are vast in diversity and quality.

I know there are some here on the org that don't like this period but, I must say...WOW!!! I love it all.

There were some great hits, album tracks, emotions, vidoes, tours, after shows and creativeity!

I also love the NPG Exodus album, the name change to prince, the TV appearances and the MUSIC!!

So if you feel the love of this era, please feel to show it. Positivity is always a plus.
