Jazz - Good or Bad? I really can't stand all the slick fake jazz Prince is trying to sell us ....
I got scared of the 1986 demos, inspired by Miles Davis I really dislike The Rainbow Children I can't stand The Vault, Xpectation, C-Note, N.E.W.S I really dislike Jazz, but the jazz Prince is given us isn't any better than the jazz they play in the small club just around my corner ... and I live in a very small village! GIVE US THE FUNK! WE GOTTA HAVE THAT FUNK Why does he need to spoil the Funk by adding such a lousy jazz outro to PHUnk? He might had called the song "Lousy Outro" instead of PFUNK. Who really disagrees with me ... and how did you come to like the Funk in the first place? In my world funk and jazz don’t match : Party or technical bullshit?

Can't say i'm overly keen the jazz stuff,I just listen to the stuff i prefer. [Edited 11/12/07 10:52am]

Can't really agree with you on this one. One of things I like about Prince is his versitility.
Prince's forays into "jazz" (or instrumental stuff) I like a lot - The Madhouse albums are great, I like Xpectation, not so much N.E.W.S. You don't hear Funk on '16' or 'The Rainbow Children'?

You don't hear Funk on '16' or 'The Rainbow Children'? yes, I do hear the Funk ... but the overall feeling spoils my fun. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, I'm just curious for your opinion 'bout this ... It's always nice if someone does agree! But I do know I'm very narrow minded in this case, which doesn't bother me

i find the same thing...sometimes it can be great in the right atmosphere, other times, just dull...but i love xpectation..so beautiful in places; and i like n.e.w.s too, has a really tight sound to it. though in all honesty, i love all genres that prince covers, almost always does a great job and adds his own feel to them, (just wish he'd do a bit more reggae ) Wouldn't you love to love me?

I love the forays into jazz. Madhouse stuff is fun and memorable. Love N.E.W.S. and I still play it when I want to chill. Love Xpectation, too. I didn't get C-Note. Don't know why, I just didn't. But I want to hear it, too.
I didn't really think about the end of PFUnk being jazz. It was just good, fun, inspired music to me. Jazz Good.

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

oh,and the outro on "PFUnk" is my favorite part of the song as it reminds me of all the crazy songs he did with the camille voice back in the day(shockadelica,if i was your girlfriend,etc.).real funky imo.a lot of parliament songs sound kinda jazzy and they're pioneers in funk. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Well.. for me Funk is a natural children of Jazz.
Loops, improvisations, drums... much come from jazz in P's musicianship.

Jazz, Blues, Funk and Soul are blood brothers and I love them all! Especially when Prince is having a jam with them.

Calhoun Square isn't really considered a "reggae type" song. But check out. Blue Light, Ripopgodazippa, and Splash...

couldn't agree more....I thought Prince would have beeen more diverse at this point in his career...but the last three albums have been the same ole same ole...the horns are getting tired....and quite honestly I think the horns have taken his live show down a notch...

I actually love the horns, I think they add that little touch of class to his shows. But then again, I am a jazz lover. So I guess it's down to people's own personal taste.

OMG!! Jazz is sweet. And when Prince adds his flavor to it, it become just that much better. We gotta think. 20 years ago, when Madhouse first dropped not too many Jazz musicians were going with that funky edge. People got wind of Madhouse and saw what Jazz and Funk could do.....the sky is the limit. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.” Brazilian bishop Dom Hélder Câmara

Let's Go Crazy is better of without 'em...and so are a bunch of other songs...it's like he can't come up with different arrangements for songs unless it includes horns...

Love the horns when he'd use them in songs from 86 or outtakes from that year. But now, I always hated when he puts the horns on Let's Go Crazy. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.
