can only cope with jazz in very small doses. always reminds me of petrula clark boop boopy dooping.. 
i like prince's take on jazz. modifies it & tones it downn a bit. all the time he's singing it's fine, but long jazzy instrumentals NOOO! | |

Jazz is a very complex form of music, and although I realize you don't care for that type of music, I don't think it's accurate or fair to label it as you did just because you lack appreciation/understanding of it. Prince was no doubt exposed to jazz before he was ever exposed to funk, due to his parents' musical careers. Jazz is a very complex form of music, and although I realize you don't care for that type of music, I don't think it's accurate or fair to label it as you did just because you lack appreciation/understanding of it.
Prince was no doubt exposed to jazz before he was ever exposed to funk, due to his parents' musical careers. It's in him, and I personally feel that his jazz-inspired music is both enjoyable and meaningful.[/quote] Indeed. It is highly enjoyable. and yes we do need the funk but also we need the rock, the soul, the ballad, the jazz and the whtatever else he has to offer. I'm grateful he's constant in his output. And I ain't got the nerve to put him down. He's a musician. You can't limit his sound. Other musicians stick to one genre cause they only know one genre. P knows a lot of genres and so gets to give it anyways he feels. Ya'll should know this by now. He ain't gonna be what you wish he should. And what I also don't understand is how you (ThatAin'tFunky) call the jazz influences that Prince incorporates into his music as "fake", but you don't have an understanding/appreciation for jazz music in the first place.

i think the love people have for the jazz stuff prince has a go at are actually in love with the roots of his music - the syncopation (grooves) that are found in everything he does. whether the music is playing outside of the key doesn't matter because that 'locked in' pattern is established to the listener, no matter the tempo. although some of it sounds cheesy no matter what rhythmic elements there are going on.

How would you determine what's real or fake, if you already have a bias towards that type of music? I do own a little jazz collection, although it's very small ... mainly some Miles Davis albums. I really have to admit ... I've been listening a lot to The Rainbow Children last weekend ... and it's growing on me ... After a few listenings I do think it's Funky! Damn ... it's one of the best albums released in the past 19 years! | |

somwhat of a contradictory opinon. If you don't like jazz how is prince going to play a jazz piece that you do like.
For people who don't like jazz. I usually suggest someone jazz like Michale philips or Hidden Beach unwrapped. then slowly work you way into some deeper flavor | |
