"Fo Shizzle"? Sounds like a made up word as well. lol
But really, I don't mind the term "fam".
Do I consider myself a fam? No But if he does a tour in the U.S. I will be.

the word makes me want to vomit, truthfully. as does anyone who uses it seriously to describe himself or herself.

interestingly, all this "fam" bullshit started around the time of the FIRST round of nonsense cease & desist letters 10 years ago.

oooo
I so agree.

It is like he made up this word to make a statement that we are not "fanaticals" therefore should not be called a "fan" and for those who goes along with it are like almost like sheep drining the baaaaah grape koolaid...

"prince says don't call ourselves fans.... so we are now faaaams".

I call my self a purple head. mushy
I think that is way more cool.

yeah, it's ironic that "fams" (short for "family") was used as a substitute for the distasteful "fan" (short for "fanatic"), yet it's only the hardcore nutjobs drinking the purple kool-aid that would be caught dead using the word in a serious way.

Fam is just one of them buzz words Ego Almighty utters that all his I've-got-no-life groupies jump on and use it in every situation they can. Especially with people who haven't heard of it so they can feel special cos something is missing in their life.

Another of these childish words is co-sign

I should get out of here pretty sharp above mentioned no-life groupies will be all over this in a few minutes.

(saying stuff like "you talking out your ass, you goin down!", "we don't appreciate such negative vibes" and "you can't be a real fam or you wouldn't say such nasty things" and "you're just a hater, why do you even come here ?" etc, etc, etc, etc....)

`Fam' is not all that bad. It comes from 'family,' as in prince family.
Prince (thinking aloud): My fans are family. they're something more than fans. They're fams. I like that one.

Don't blame me.

I agree the word is silly. And meaningless. The usual son of a king trying to impose his will on his FANS.

Prince has always made up new words, and new ways to spell the old words, and names for people (especially his women) FAM is Princes word for his fans, it's not new, it's just a label, I've seen usernames dumber than that. confused

According to Webster's dictionary :

Fan is a noun. Its etymology may be short for fanatic but it's not sure.
Meaning : an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a pursuit)

Even if fan is short for fanatic, the meaning of fanatic is not that negative :
marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion

Strangely enough it seems the fams are expected to be uncritical and the fans are accused of being too critical...

To call yourself a fan, as I do, is to be supportive. Maybe it's because I can't play guitar or write music like Prince and his friends, or peers. I guess it's just about loving music. Some of us have to be listeners.

Come to think of it we are all fans for something, art, architecture, even the guy that can build a car. Or a girl that's a great cook.

Imago

I always found the irony surrounding that silly ass word rediculous.

I believe it stems from an interview (oh excuse me, INNERview rolleyes) that Prince , oh wait, excuse me, that prince rolleyes, did with Chris Rock in promotion of Emancipation.

Prince was responding to the fact that his records are always considered "make or break", and he stated that he had alot of FAMS who support him. He then explained that he uses the word FAM because FAN is short for FANatical falloff

Anyways, the irony behind this is some of the folks who were the absolute most fanatical started labeling themselves as FAMS. falloff

I also thought fam was short for family but it now represents those who worship, believes and agrees with anything Prince says, even when he is wrong.. It has become equivalent to the other extreme, Battered Prince Fans, those who hate Prince's guts and get angry about Prince but still logon on daily to talk about him everyday with negative posts instead of just moving on.
