Picked up Dirty Mind

Went to FYE today and got Dirty Mind. It was a really tough decision as they had LoveSexy, Parade, For You, Sign Of The Times, Purple Rain and the second album.....

It was way different from what I was expecting a bunch of guitar solos, and in that respect I was a little disappointed....Still pretty good though I guess...
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Wow... cool beans.

They had that album at the FYE back in my hometown, didn't check the price cuz I already had it.

Great selection... I've never found Lovesexy, Parade or For You in the places I looked in.

But I'm looking for 2 of those (come xmas, I'll have 'em).
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Sign of the times was like $30 or $35, and DM was $14, not used (or at least it wasn't evident if it was)

I was actually looking for Batman, but no luck

Let me guess :hmmm: You were drawn to the cheaper price lol

Nah. I got it because I heard Dr. Fink had some cool solo's on it, and because of the lyrical content...

It's definitely his first great album. Can't imagine what it's like to listen to for the first time now. For me it's 2 great sides with 4 songs on each, Side One (the first four tracks) are one of the best sides of music he's done.

My favorite so far is When You Were Mine, and I like Partyup a lot....the others are great too, but those two are my favorites...

EDIT: Dr. Fink is a genius...

It's not his strongest record. In fact, it's probably his weakest. But it's essential nonetheless, and it's infinitely better than anything by anyone else.

What???!!! Dirty Mind one of his weakest records? I couldn't disagree more. It's one of his best. His first great album with his first great pop song (When U Were Mine). One of his top 5 albums and the moment where prince became Prince.

Oh,great though it is-to say that it's 'infinitely better than anything by anyone else' is the epitome of ignorance.

"...but you're such a hunk, so full of spunk, I'll give you HEAD! " did it for me. And the album cover: That's where it was back in the day: Bedsprings, high heels, panties, and trenchcoats.

it sounds like you don't even have Purple Rain ... how bizarre eek either I'm getting old or you just started listening to him yesterday -- if so, welcome and go back and buy those other albums, buy em all ...

Dirty Mind remains in my personal top tier.

I still remember the first time I heard it. I'd gone back and picked up all of the earlier albums after I bought 1999 in 1982. Dirty Mind absolutely blew my hair back.

It's an amazing album.

I first listened to it around the beginning of July this year and it's still clear in my mind (but of course I wrote it down, so I'll always know how it went down).

The first track was very catchy and I got into it real easy. Then I loved "When u were mine"... went a little down for me with the next two (now of course I love 'em both). I was lured into a false sense of security cuz I was thinking "this album isn't as dirty as I thought it was gonna be."

But once we arrived in Uptown (which is what I call the 2nd half of the album), it started to get Risque... with Head & Sister... blew me away when he threw those 2 in. I love surprises like that.

So it's an awesome album for me. Subtle Greatness is what I like to call it. It's very organic and old school. As good as it is, I still have albums that I find more exciting than it. So it's kinda hard to get back to it when you have 1999, Parade and Purple Rain at your disposal cool

No, it isn't. I've had all of those "at my disposal" since 1986 -- plus everything that came before and after. I never find it difficult to go back to Dirty Mind. It's a seminal work -- no pun intended.

Congrats. Sorry you didn't dig it that much, but give it time. It's in my top 5 Prince albums--one of the few I generally listen to from start to finish without skipping a song. And that was the funkiest configuration of the Revolution--I much prefer Andre & Dez instead of Brown Mark & Wendy.

I'm a little jealous that you don't have those other albums yet because there's there's nothing like hearing the crazy brilliance of his music for the first time and have it blow you away. Sigh.

If you want guitar solos, you should get Purple Rain or SOTT next, although Bambi from Prince and I'm Yours from For You each contain kick ass solos. (Although personally I'd recommend Parade, Prince or Lovesexy.)

If crazy guitar work is what you're after, I'd recommend picking up any number of 12" singles before buying albums.
