I heard that he comes in at #3 in the "top 100 living purple dinosaurs" catagory,
with Dino & Barney occupying the #1 & 2 spots, respectively.

hmph! No Marcel Duchamp?!? You can't include Hirst but not Duchamp...if it weren't for Duchamp, Hirst's "art" would just be animals in fermaldehyde. smile This list sucks, even if Prince really is a genius.lol

The list is for living geniuses. Duchamp (a genius no doubt) died in 1968.

doh! I totally missed that very crucial adjective "living" in the title. err

Well, I still don't think Hirst should be on the list--how about Matthew Barney instead? (Even though I don't like his marketing strategy, I think he has done more to/for the commercialization of art than Hirst---but then that begs the arguement is the commericialization of art genius or even a good thing....) So um, yeah...Duchamp's dead so he can't be on the list. sigh

(sorry I'm an art geek first & foremost. lol)

There seems to be a glaring lack of Sporting geniuses in that list , Muhammad Ali is the only one listed , sure he deserves his place , but do 2 chess players really deserve places above the likes of every other sportsplayer since time began sad . Bad luck Pele , McEnroe et al , you may have been amazing and excited millions worldwide but you couldnt sit at a table and think whether to move your rook or your bishop 10 moves in advance , you were too busy being spontaneously brilliant sadly , which doesnt count as much it seems .

Didn't we all know he was a genius anyway??? eek

Don't understand why he wasn't nearer the top if not at the top. Might explain why he can be 'odd' at times, you know that genius is just one step away from madness right! razz

What do they mean with genius?
The list is a very mixed bag and so many great people are missing and many shouldn't be on there at all...
But I definitely think P has every right to be on such a list so congrats thumbs up!

Okay,
while I'm well aware that I'm no where near being considered a genius in any catagory,
I never would've imagined in my wildest dreams, that a list could be compiled with the names of Prince, Dolly Parton, Osama bin Laden, Stan Lee
& yet not include me.
shrug

I agree, your name should definitely be on that list! What were these people thinking?

It would be cool if orgers posted some quotes of other artists that said he is a genius:

"As said by Miles Davis, he's a genius; he takes from many people and make it his: Sly Stone, Santana... everything. I wish him, more than anything else, that he gets a family, a son, a daughter; I wish that to him more than anything else, because he's got already all the other things"

With personal taste being what it is, we will for ever discuss the merits of what makes one artist or person a legend to the exclusion of someone else.

My thing is.....What should be the criteria for being a Living Legend?

Many of the artists (if I focus simply on the musical field) listed are pioneers in their own right...I dont particularly like everything that Bowie did, but I can recognise his genius nonetheless. Likewise, Prince is not my favorite artist either...he is up in the top 10 of my faves. However, you cannot deny his influence and creativity annd unique approach.

However, what would make Prince (for e.g.) a Living Legend, but not say Sly Stone, George Clinton or Maurice White, all of whom we know he has been influenced by in one way or another and has paid homage to also, in addition to each one themselves being a recognised as a pioneer in their own right?

Is it because he has been in the print and other media moreso than any of the 3 names listed? Does that have any bearing (or should it) on the selections?

While those in your religion would agree, and i sort of see your point, God would NOT technically be considered "living" and people of other religions would have a fit that Allah etc. would not be in the list.

The 'geniuses' were nominated by 600 Britons and then ranked by a panel of six consultants who work in the fields of 'creativity and innovation'.

They ranked the candidates using five factors – paradigm shifting, popular acclaim, intellectual power, achievement and cultural importance.

'Many people argue that a genius can be defined by their contribution, where it turns conventional thinking on its head,' said Nigel Clarke of consultants Synectics, who conducted the study.

I can't believe Dolly Parton is below quite a few people on that list confused

She's been writing songs since she was a teenager plus she has her own theme park. At LEAST put her above Aretha.

And why isn't Trey Parker & Matt Stone on this list? biggrin
