Yes, he did... and I wouldn't have any problem with that.

I try to keep my "fanaticsm" under control... and the first step I took towards that is not referring to myself as a "fan"... But when people ask me "so you're a Prince fan"... I just nod. I don't refer to myself as such, but if its the only way people'll understand, I'll say yes when they ask me if I am.

That's just odd and a little bit silly, but I suggest you tell Prince that there is a difference between 'fan and 'fanatic'. And who cares what he says anyway - the guys a genius but he talks a lot of crap.

it's when you start convincing yourself to think like him that you become a fanatic - he isn't a religious leader or even a middling thinker - he's a musician.

I listen to his music, and do the thinking for myself, so no, I'm not worried, but some obviously should be.

Do you mean on the .org or in general? Fans sites are the current national pastime. Everyone has one...and they're all filled with "fanatics". Just go to YouTube or Myspace, you'll see. People need something to do. No one actually does anything anymore...not when everything and anything in the world is a url away. I'm not saying it's not extreme, but it's the way people communicate and socialize today...so, on average, what most do here, is not so out of the ordinary.

i think there are two degrees to the word 'fan'.

i think to be a fan of some one is fine, you respect, admire follow their career etc..... when you are fanatical about some one.. then there is danger!!!!! fanatical to me screams obsessive and i think if prince has to be wary of anyone he should be wary of his obsessive 'fans' he has out there....

but if you want to get even deeper than that then there are obsessive fans who never miss a concert, buy all his stuff and follow his career no matter what... then there are the OBSESSIVE fans who have taken it too far and start not only doing all the above, but trying to follow him, find out what he likes for breakfast etc, where he is staying, trying to get into his hotel room mission impossible style and erm jumping on him at gigs etc!!!!!

thats just my take on this anyhow

I LOVE the question. It shoulda been asked a looooong time ago, if you ask me. Some of the threads and comments on them (mostly by female "admirers") are truly disturbing.

I find it funny how alot of them didn't seem to see this thread. lurking

A couple of people have told me that there's a difference between "fan" and "fanatic"... sure, the dictionary says there's a difference... but he said so himself, 'fan' is short for 'fanatic'... so it's a word I never use to describe myself.
Listener & Admirer are two common words I use to describe myself... admirer definitely covers more bases cuz there's a lot to admire about him. Not just his good looks, but his talent and dedication. My signature once said "What draw me 2 Prince was the intangibles. His good looks were just a bonus."

The intangibles being the stage presence he has, the aura that surrounds him, his voice, and the beautiful sound of his music and his dedication to it.

I get in on the fun from time to time with the picture and romance type threads... haha, but I am not as crazy as some other people who fantasize about him 24/7. wink u only think I do cuz I come here so much. But I've got better things to do with my time than imagine the inprobable. If anything does come to mind, it's only for a minute and then I'm done with it.

I think Prince all really wants from his listeners is their respect for his talents and dedication to his work... that's all I've ever given him. Even with negativity flying over the place here, I'm not one of those people who criticize his musical decisions.

All I've ever been is honest in how I feel about his music. He puts everything into his music... so I put everything into my posts. He deserves as much praise as I can give him, so I never hold back on his account. What you get from me here is brutal honesty and if that's too much to handle, ignore my posts. lol

It's as simple as that.

I think some people do take it way too far and I believe that is a major factor in his low opinion of fans and his negative attitude toward fansites. At some point the "OHMYGOSHHEISSOCUUUUTE"! must be just as sickening to him as being called every name in the book.

By the same token, it's condescending for Prince to paint everyone with the same broad brush. It may not seem so to him, but most people here have families who love them and careers, plus other interests and everyday concerns to occupy them. Many are accomplished, successful and intelligent in their own right.

Unfortunately, it's the small number of extremists that are the most vocal and get most of the attention. In his position, that's a valid concern.

I'm not sure what you mean about him befriending us but I think that's an unrealistic notion even under the best of circumstances.

That has the potential to be funny. I don't know who started it but I'm sure that's what they were thinking. That "Does Prince Fart" thread was hilarious.

There are only a couple here that seem to be extreme but even with those, I tend to think, they're only having fun.

As fanaticism goes, there will always be the scary ones...and/or the dangerous ones. But outside of that, I suspect that the intensity of the "fanatic" will die down. As the divide between celeb and civilian becomes smaller, so will the intensity of their fan-celeb "relationship". It may open the door to new issues but it closes many others.

I'm sure everyone here (at least I hope) knows that Prince isn't their friend, but there's nothing wrong with him being friendly towards them (collectively) and them feeling this. That's what the fan site is supposed to be about. The web makes it easier for to celeb to take advantage of this. Most should.

Ok, I gotcha.

For the most part I think that limiting his physical contact with fans is a prudent policy. He walked right up to myself and a couple of friends in Vegas, we chatted very amiably with him for a few minutes and nobody fammed out but I have to ask myself how often he's able to do that?

Other than that it would be cool if he would post a blog once in awhile on 3121.com...unless he insists on using princeybonics in which case I'll pass. lol

I just love Prine and since there ain't nothin I can do to change the way I feel, I just accept it. Love of the music was what brought me to him. But something happened along the way and it is what it is. I have no false illusions, I know that I'm not thin or young enough for the love to be reciprocated. And since real love is unconditional I continue to dig the sounds and love him anywauy.
