That's what I liked about it. The only reason I excuse him for performing on such a bullshit show as "American Idol" is because he acted such a bitch about the whole thing. They didn't know if he was actually going to show up or not until the last second, he didn't speak to or interact with anyone, and he got the hell out of there as soon as he was finished. His whole attitude was like he was better than anyone else there and they weren't even worthy of his presence.....and he was absolutely right. lol

Given that appearance, he had confirmed some of my first assumptions about him. He does come across as very arrogant and above everyone else. And I've always allowed him that right (heck of a lot better than anyone else I listen to anyways)... because he was just being himself. And ain't nothing wrong with that.
He kinda affected the way I've felt about American Idol, I enjoy it a little less and actually wished they had stopped after his appearance (none of their guests will be able to top him). But its very true that he was better than anyone there, haha.

lol there's a lot of stuff I'd let him get away with...and arrogance was something I knew and accepted from him very early on, before I even came here. Only now I know that there's more to him than sheer arrogance. wink

isn't he just being a (male) diva??? biggrin

I think so giggle

Before I "got to know" him, I thought he was kind of a diva anyways. So I thought that was standard behavior for him, haha

well if i was Prince and everyone wanted a piece of me - which they do - i'd probably act like a diva - same with photos - some people believe everytime someone takes your photo you lose a bit of your soul

Paid or not, the superbowl allows the biggest audience so you know the day after people suddenly want Purple Rain and your Best Of CD.

And that's another issue I have with it. The Super Bowl just reinforced in many people's (read: general public) minds that Prince hasn't really done anything big since Purple Rain. Maybe they vaguely remember SOTT, Batman, or D&P, but I bet most of them couldn't name a Prince song written after 1993. To think that most of the viewers went out and looked for anything other than VBoP or The Hits would be giving them too much credit. (Case in point: see DreamyPopRoyalty's post).

Granted, Prince didn't really help the situation since he only played songs he wrote from 1984 or prior. And then the most current song he performed was a cover of someone else's song, so how would people (e.g. the general public) realize he's released an album every year or so (at least) since...pretty much forever.

This brings up a theory I have behind some of Prince's actions. IMO, I think there is a huge difference between a pop star, a musician, and both. Prince 1984-1985 was both, but then when ATWIAD rolled around, I think he became mainly a musician. He did it for the music but so the public didn't completely forget him because his music wasn't mainstream, he threw in a few "hits" he knew would get on the charts and keep his name around ex parade - kiss, d&p - cream, gett off. So yea, he hasnt had anything as big since Purple Rain because he hasn't tried to dominate the charts like he did with Purple Rain.

Although, his disappointment with Lovesexy contradicts my theory so I have to give it some more thought lol but that's a thread of its own.
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

As for selling out...another one of my theories which kinda goes with the one above is one of Prince's strategies to keep his name around. He knows his experimental music will drive away fans, but the thing is, it drives away a whole lot more than it brings in where as only the hardcore fans stay for the ride. So I think, Prince gets in the media for about a year or so, replenish his fanbase, then goes of being experimental again. Ex

Purple Rain - He was tired of the "black" followers and I think felt they wouldnt take to stuff like ATWIAD and Parade well (proof is Vainandy lol) So he used Purple Rain to get as many ppl as he could. Then went experimental after the PR craze ended

Batman - Prince lost a ton of fans and Lovesexy was a sign if he kept on that experimental path he'd have less fans that he started with in 1978! So he used Batman to get more listeners.

D&P - The success of Batman wasn't enough and Graffiti Bridge proved that, so he got into the mainstream again.

Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic - The only reason I'm mentioning this is because I think he tried to cash in on the whole "I wrote a song and named an album after this year 17 years ago and now that it's here, here i am!" Bold and ridiculous statements like "I think(or i want) it'll sell more than PR" dont help much either

Musicology - TRC and ONA were definitely only recieved by the hardcore fans and being the 20th anniversary of PR it was definitely the right year to get out there again.

2006 - Superbowl, SNL, AI, GMA, etc all just getting his name out there through television since he really didn't promote 3121 too well..

So after all that, If you think of what came and before each album it's pretty arguably Prince dips in and out of the mainstream as he pleases just to replenish some fans and get some noobies on the boat.

I loved it when he came on AI.

I hate the show, just love the bad auditions, but when I heard that he might be on, I had to watch.

He did his thing for 2 songs and he killed it.

By far the best was when after it was over, and just before the host was gonna greet him he started walking off stage!

So hot!

Simon was upset that he didn't stay around, but why? What did u want him to talk about? How most of these singers can't sing?

he's unpredictable but i'm suprised he did such a cheesy show ( i saw clip on u tube btw!)
i admire the way he always chooses 2 surprise lol
but he looked uncomfortable, almost nervous...his hair & makeup were terrible & he had plastic surgery look about him..
i wonder if he regrets doing it? i thought he looked really tired.
however, the superbowl was performed with such passion - total joy! he reached the younger generation who were loving him!
here in the uk, there has been absolute princemania! his concert/s were electric.
ultimate perfection. i'm still high!
he's on top of his game, he knows it & i'm certain he cares.
he's under pressure now 2 keep us 'satisfied'! biggrin

I agree completely.

But I guess you see things differently if you weren't already "into him" at the time. I was very casual about him around that time.
In fact, I don't think I even knew he was still making albums.
I've watched American Idol every year since it premiered... and that was the best surprise ever (nearly makes up for Clay Aiken not winning in season 2)...

This appearance alerted a lot of people that he's "still around" and I think it was actual a good move, putting it that way.

He could have done without this and still blown people away at the SuperBowl, but it was still cool he made time for this appearance.
