is it because this song is at the end of the very long symbol album that it doesnt get very much love? because i think its one of the best tracks on there, one of the best prince tracks of the nineties, and way better than its awkward younger sister emancipation.

the groove is classic npg. admittedly i would like to have seen the clavinet riff that wound up on the derivative emancipation on here, but its all good.

and if you ever give tony m a pass for anything, give him a pass for how cool the "joy for sale down on the corner" bit sounds. the three parts of the chorus - tony, the staple singers/prince main part, and "we sacrifice!" interlock and work together far better than they have any right to.

the lyrics are great too; avoiding the pitfalls of genre exercise that he often falls into, prince provides a uniquely quirky, princely perspective on the civil rights struggle as he sees it from 1992.

the ending, however, is pure tits. after the last "S-A-C-R-I-F-I-C-E", when the chorus slams back in with "JOYYYYY...." and then prince goes nuts over everything.....so great. "LORD IF I GET TIRED, I GOT TO KEEP ON, WALKING DOWN THIS ROAD....."

anyway, someone tell me they love this song as much as i do so i can get to sleep at night

Yeah, for some reason, I came in thinking that "3 Chains O' Gold" was supposed 2b the last song on the album.
It didn't pan out for me... and I gave it all the listens I could possibly give it.

Sacrifice of Victor, not sure how it really falls into the whole album (I guess I'd have 2c the movie to really know what's what).
I agree with what you said. "I know joy lives round the corner" and the rest of the chorus is very sweet sounding.

And I love singing along 2 "We sacrifice".
