RICK JAMES HAD TO EAT HIS WORDS !!!

Rick James dissed Prince a number of times...he stated that Prince doesnt have what it takes to make it ..He said a few times that Prince wont stand a chance making it by wearing bikini & leg warmers on stage ...that was early in prince's career.

I wonder what Rick's reaction was like when Prince exploded with His Movie and album.Became mega BIG...and even few years later went back on stage in bikini & leg warmers on Lovesexy tour (a bigger A badder concert than Rick could ever dream of putting on )

That was like in your face RICK!!!

Let the man rest in peace, he made his peace with Prince shortly before he died by saying that Prince was the only one keeping the Funk alive and when he died Prince played a bit of Rick´s music in concert and said "Rest in peace, Rick." , which shows true class. In the end, they both respected and acknowledged each other, wich is a very good thing, so please let the brother rest in peace already.

IMHO (and I second Santana's comments) that P takes aspects from musicians and artists before him and "makes them his own" (in a nice way). I'm sure after you listen to "Super Freak" and some other Rick James tracks, you will appreciate that P has a little Rick James added to his tapestry.

Sigh...

Can we stop this Prince and Rick James comparisons for once in here?

I mean, they were sort of on par during the Dirty Mind-period, Prince moved on and became one of the most important popular musicians ever. Rick James never developed his music any further since then.

For me, comparing Rick James to Prince is as useless as comparing Michael Jackson to Prince.

He told the magazines that he was going to make a movie and it was going to be a good movie. He said it wouldn't be like a certain someone riding around on a motorcyle looking like a fool. Of course, the movie never happened though. lol

Rick never developed any further since Prince's "Dirty Mind" era? Where were you during the huge "Street Songs" era just one year later? Rick was still riding high two albums after that with "Throwin' Down" and "Cold Blooded". And that's not even mentioning the success of his protegee groups.

For me, comparing Rick James to Prince is as useless as comparing Michael Jackson to Prince.

Rick is a great comparison to Prince. Both wrote, produced, played most of their instruments, and put out several protegee groups. Both of them also had the hardest funk on the radio from 1980-1984.

Michael Jackson is absolutely no comparison to Prince. The only name that should even come out of someone's mouth when comparing Michael Jackson to Prince, is Quincy Jones because he is the one that made Michael the success he was. There wasn't much comparing Michael to Prince until the pop crowd discovered Prince and that's only because both are black and both are feminine. The R&B crowd always had the Rick vs. Prince thing going on because they compared talent.

Rick was Funk and Roll .

Prince brought balence to the Funk and was the last of the great funksters.

James was the Father of the Funk
Sly was the innovative side of the Funk
George was the psychodelic side of the Funk
Rick was Funk and Roll
Prince was the Funk United.

Riiiiight. Q is the one who did all the work.He wrote the biggest songs on those albums and Mike had no input or say so whatsoever & made absolutely no contribution whatsover rolleyes. Other than that though, I agree that the Rick James and Prince comparison makes a lot more sense. I see a lot of similarities between those two.

I double second that! However, don't rule out our boy Jimi. He was the Hard Rock side of the Funk. (Ask Eddie Hazel, Ernie Isley, Slash, and even P himself)
Oh, yeah! Some may disagree but I always felt that Chuck D and PE was the Hip-hop side of the Funk! I saw them with the Beastie Boys and I must say they threw down with IT!!! Sadly, however since then, I felt that the genre has petered out. sad

...we are straying here ,this is not a comparison tread !!!
Its about how Rick rediculed Prince ,bullied him at times, laughed him off as a joke...stated that he stands no chance making it wearing bikini on stage ...only to see prince explode bigger and badder !!!

And to those who try to compare ...please !!!

prince is an all rounder ,he does it all ,Funk,Rock,Pop... here refuse to play one instrument ,refuse to sing with one voice, refuse to be produced, refuse to play by the so-called rules of success in the biz...and still rocks better than enyone from his era ...wears buttless pants and heels and still considered strait by the majority(who else could pull this off?)so gimme an artist that compares...well?
