Joni Mitchell doesn´t think Prince is a genius

She said it back in 1988:
"In the 80s there was a lot of good dance music but even Prince, although he's great, he's not an originator like Sly was, so even the greats of this generation aren't in the truly genius status."

i'm sure that if she was asked the question now she would call him a genius as his sound has been influencing music over the last 15-20 years

To her genius means being an originator in the first place.

I think Prince is definitely a genius, NOT a originator.

Here are more interesting quotes from an interview Morrissey made her in 1996:
"Like the first time I met Prince, you know, I put together two very unruly sentences in the course of the night and he corrected me. He said "a poet like you." I said, oh, God, like I have to -- I think I said I'm tireder -- he said are you tired or are you hungry? I think I said I'm tireder than I am hungry. It was some grammatical error. That still sounds right to me. But Prince corrected me, you know, like, and I said, "Oh, God, do I have to play the poet?"

on what instances have they met?

i can only think of two:

1. the "around the world in a day" listening session at wb records before
the album was released. she was invited and showed up.

2. during his 3121 parties at his home adress (not in vegas) she was in
attendance at least once. stevie wonder was mentioned in the same blurb
at 3121.com at the time. one of the violet brown reports iirc

does anyone know of any other time they met? besides prince being at one
of her shows before he made it big.

Yeah, because the Minneapolis Sound wasn't original nor created by Prince and of course everyone was performing in bikini drawers and openly talking about overtly sexual acys like head and then singing openly about incest, oh and all 19-year-old newbies had complete autonomy on their 1st album. Yeah, poor Prince - he didn't originate shit. eek

Humanity as a whole has not yet reached Genius, can't ya tell?
It isn't how you play the guitar, it's how you love everyone that matters.
We are all our weakest link. And that is a hateful heart. Hate crimes
affect the entire body. Guitar, and music period celebrate those that love
to know that....He who feels it knows it, Reggae-Peace-out.

Well, she's dead right about P NOT being original. He's borrowed from so many different artists it's not even funny. Like MOST great artists have done. That said, P IS a genius. I think Joni has a major thing for P, like Stevie Nicks does. The major difference is that Joni doesn't want to come across like a fan. Whereas Stevie straight up doesn't give a fuck.

Do you know what is an originator ?

Perfoming in bikini or singing openly about incest is not originating...

And P has borrowed a lot from other artists, probabaly more than any body else...

I don't think YOU quite know what an originator is.

Ok so name the artist(s) that performed in bikini underwear, especially as a black R&B artist. Then name the artist(s) that talked openly about incest, and don't give me some "veiled" or "innuendo" examples either.

P was original in his concept of who HE was and wanted to show the audience. Again, who came up with the Minneapolis Sound? Stevie?

EVERY artist has borrowed from others but to say that P borrowed more than any other artist is just plain ignorant and being a hater. But I see who your avatar is and maybe that's why you have a slanted view of P.
