I believe the thing that is misunderstood about "Darling Nikki." is that, although masterbation is a part of life...in 1984. Prince, had all eyes on him.... As u can tell it didn't bother me, but I knew at the time, that it would hurt his sales some....he lost a certain crowd of shy people. Doing all that u want to in this world to express yourself, doesn't always pay off...the one word, cost him thousands, because some people are embarassed by the concept. It's that simple. And what in the hell is that supposed to mean, exactly?

When he did Guitar in London instead of "I'll write a letter when i learn how to spell, Until that day you can go to (hell)" he sang "...Until that day you can go to... heaven."
I was like C'mon... [Edited 9/28/07 12:34pm]

bunnyhoney said: It absolutely drives me nuts to hear him change the lyrics of his own songs during a concert. I’ve been a huge fans for 20+ years but this whole Jehovah Witness/Squeaky Clean Prince is killing me!! I’ve been listening to the London 02 Arena Finale Live Concert and he did it 4 times (Irresistible Bitch, Darling Nikki, Erotic City, and DMSR) at least during DMSR he sang (girl it aint no use, you might as well get loose, so work that body like you “WANT SOME MORE”) Come on!! He wouldn’t even attempt the Lyrics to Darling Nikki, Erotic City or Irresistible Bitch he would start and then say “Awwww…I can’t sing that”. What’s next ? rereleasing albums with revised lyrics? This REALLY bothers me!!!!
i dont care if he changes words/ i would like the diehard fans to sing the real words very loudly/ it would amuse me at least and get the hint accross[Edited 9/27/07 8:03am]

If I were Prince, or any artist for that matter, I'd still speak my damn mind even if it would cost me fans. It's better to do what ever you want to do than to be a fake sell-out and try to please everybody. [Edited 9/29/07 14:44pm] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I do respect his religious beliefs and all, but why must he tease people with his dirty lyrics? And why would he even write lyrics, like " I'll write a letter, when I learn how to spell, until that day you can go to (hell)"?
The only explanation I can come up with: Prince is not completely over his nasty little self yet. Deep down inside his nasty side is begging to come out. Just admit it Prince! We'll still love you, probably even more so! Don't try too hard to be perfect! love the one who is Love!

The saddest thing is, people on here talk like they think they own him or something. Clearly only those who think like this will have something 2say back 2 me on this, so I'll just sit back and wait 4 those people 2 identify themselves.
The way I see it, it's much more simple than all the theories people are coming out with. He is a man, real men make decisions. His decision has clearly been to tone it down. If I were in his shoes and had broken boundaries of lyrical & sexual expression in a time when it was tabboo, I'm sure I would want to pull back a bit when suddenly the world is turning this expression into sensationalism with no discression what-so-ever. The subtlety has gone, so Prince is bringing it back - saying things without having to say them. If u look at his recent performances of Satisfied, he has demonstrated that he can still get incredible sexually intense with his audience without having to be crude. Prince made heavy use of synths when very few people knew what they were. Now everybody is using synths 2 do everything (even sing in some cases), so it is natural that he is making an extra point to show what can be done with real musicians & real instruments. - He makes perfect sense. & if you ask me, it shows that he has a very broad range of musical & lyrical communication. Apreciate it, or just put Dirty Mind on repeat & have done with it.

I just hope that you aren't seeing him in the eyes of one with purple 3-D shades, as if he could do no wrong. If this were the likes of someone like, oh say, "JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE"; then, you might have agreed with me. When the original intention of the song on that line was meant to rhyme that one couplet, he kind of ruined the flow (Not that I even really like that song, as it is. Because I don't. But, what a butcher to an already badger.). Not that it was overly necessary. But, really. As someone else said. I'd rather he just avoided it altogether or just play an instrumental version of those types of songs. Either way, as long as the "GOOD" music is residual in some form and/or fashion, I'm content.

They'll hear worse than even the dirtiest "classic" Prince track in half that shit the industry is trying to convince my generation is decent music, and on those fuck-up reality tv shows. Besides, if a young person or even a kid is at a Prince show, it's not like they just wandered in unprepared. Chances are a person who goes to a Prince show is already well familar with Prince singing about blowjobs and incest. And as for those parents who wanted to share their love of Our Hero with their offspring, but at the same time shelter them from the no-no words? Knock it off. It's stupid. You want your kids to know Prince? Then show them everything there is, not just the cutesy or religious side of his work. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Any decent parent protects his or her offspring, in his or her own home! There are subject matters out there that are NOT for children. Your argument is a bit like saying a parent should expose a child to an actor's entire oeuvre, to the R-rated films they have starred in as well as the PG or G-rated ones... or the parents somehow lack integrity. You know I love you, meow, but sometimes...

I knew deep down that somebody would be able to squeeze some more milage out of this one. For the record, I do not own any purple 3-D glasses. I am going on musical/social history (of which Prince features quite strongly in the breaking down of contemporary boundaries) & interview dialogue from the man himself. I have not yet even got 2 expressing my opinion on whether I would prefer him to avoid singing these songs or not. Although unfortunately, personal opinion appears to be the only basis for people judgements on this subject. & again, with opinions, nobody can win or be right because that is all they are. All I intended was to clear up the "reason" why he has chosen 2 make this move with factual evidence. If u or anybody else has some evidence to the contrary, please let me know. If not, I'm not too interested to hear your opinions (again). So don't bother quoting me. (ps. why anybody would want to argue over an (unnamed) song which they claim to not even like, screams out: "iv got absolutely nothing better to do")
