Companion albums

Which albums do you love mixing & matching together? Or simply playing one right after the other because they go together so well?

One night, I mixed several tracks from prince, Come and TGE and had a blast mixing all kinds of music that just fits so well together.

And 1999 & Purple Rain was pretty fun doing one after the other. They're similar yet so different.

Or anyone does have a super-strange combo they'd like to share?

I think Prince would prefer you listen to the records in their original configuration rather than mixing and matching records. He would most certainly frown on such negative behavior.

One of his records was evenly originally tracked so you were forced to listen to it in the appropriate order, not randomizing or creating your own tracklist (Lovesexy).

Hmmm... point taken.

In the very beginning, I couldn't fathom the idea of distorting his work like that. Ok, I've got no excuse... still a newbie.
But at one point, it just... happened. And I enjoyed it.

And I'm sure he wouldn't mind, especially if it revitalized some of the songs in my view. It's a way to keep things fresh. And sometimes, it really works.

haha... I feel like I used to be one of his "mind slaves" cuz I felt obligated to try to enjoy every last song he's written. Even if its him, even I have a place to draw the line.
I've taken tracks out of few of his records and that actually makes everything run smoother and makes it more enjoyable.

I listen through his albums in their entirity whenever I possibly can. And he's the only artist I've really done that for... cuz taking one out... the whole just isn't quite the same.

Oh, Prince care very passionately about keeping the order of the tracks on all his records.

Flagrantly stating as you have that you mix and match records will infuriate him. If he happens to see your writing, I would think there is a good chance he will find out where you live , come knock on your door. He will give you a lengthy lecture about messing with HIS music. Then he will give you a lengthier lecture about the benefits of becoming a Jehovah Witness.

So you have been warned, eat your words , or Princey will soon come a knockin'

Okay... I get it...
Thanx 2 my "Musicology" thread, you think I'm a complete spazz that can't be taken seriously, am I right? rolleyes
I don't want this to become another "flaming" thread.
I was serious about what I said. Mixing & matching is a blast... and I know ur just messing with me.

Just playing with you...you are quite sensitive aren't you...that's ok

I expected your response to be more like "prince is welcome to come visit me whenever he likes"

haha...
... yeah... nobody's been reacting 2 my threads lately, so I'm thinking that I've pretty much lost all respect after what happened with that Musicology thread.

But yeah, if I weren't so wound up over being ignored so much, I would have said just that.
I've become such a realist that it's not even funny. I seem to daydream a lot less. But that whole scenerio does seem pretty ridiculous. Like the almighty Prince has the time to hunt me down and lecture me. That's laughable.

If he had that much time on his hands, he'd answer all of his "fan" mail. Including one letter I sent him back in the early spring.

But nobody's gonna answer my question... that's just cold. confused

No, I am... unfortunately... it's been happening a lot lately.

Honestly, have u ever mixed & matched tracks from different Prince albums?

TBA/Lovesexy are natural companions, I've heard, cuz Prince substitued one for the other. Anyone who has both care to elaborate?
Come/TGE are too because the material has already been mixed and matched by Prince/prince himself... so naturally they sound great together.

And some people have said they like to mix/match Musicology & 3121 to get the best out of both.

Anymore pairings someone'd like to mention?

Lately I just let my iPod do the mixing and matching, but to answer your original question, I think Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge combine really well. A lot of the songs were written at the same time, the theme of "New Power" permeates both, and the spiritual/sexual duality is present on each. They combine to form one long superalbum.

wow... I certainly wouldn't have picked those 2.

Graffiti Bridge & Diamonds + Pearls, I could understand cuz they come from around the same time...

Haven't done prince and D&P... but quite a few Come tracks go really well with the prince album's material

Nah, they were released a year apart, but the GB songs had been written much earlier, which is why the Andre Crabtree the Third segue from Alphabet St. can be heard at the beginning of Joy in Repetition, for example. Those two albums are really one unit in a way, just broken up by a Batman album and some really bad Time songs.

Snap

when i'm in a happy mood -- Lovesexy & Parade and sometimes For You
when i'm in a deep spiritual mood -- Lovesexy & Graffiti Bridge
when i'm in a romantic mood -- Prince & some of 3121
when i want to remember the good times -- Emancipation & The Rainbow Children
when i want guitar -- Purple Rain & The Gold Experience and first half of Chaos & Disorder
i also tend to mix 1999, 0(+>, Come, The Black Album, Dirty Mind, Sign O' The Times, Controversy

I think this is interesting, there are songs I love and songs I dont like from each album, and yes Ive done it in the past.

For example, On graffitti bridge, I take out all the non-prince songs (including the title track), and suddenly the album is a complete masterpiece (maybe one of his best ever).

On Lovesexy, Ive included some of the awesome longer versions at the end (I wish U heaven parts 1,2 and 3), Glam Slam 12inch and Escape. Also (THis is not music this is a trip). I think these songs are essential for the "total" Lovesexy experience. Ive taken out "Dance On" as that song annoys the crap out of me.

On Batman, Ive done something similar, taken out "Batdance", as for some reason I feel it shouldnt be there, and "The arms of orion", and instead inserted the awesome Scandalous Sex Suite, Partyman 12, feel U up long stroke, I love U in me, 200 balloons and 12 inches of the Future and Electric Chair. This to me is the TOTAL Batman experience, and its something else.

I completely love the first 2 albums, but both are too short. I´ve taken out a couple of the love songs from "Prince" and combine that with For You.

With Dirty Mind, I think that goes well with a few songs from Controversy. But for some reason the title track of Controvery is too long for me, Ive also taken out PartUp from Dirty Mind as I cant really get into that so I just take it out - when youve done that you get a super 1980-1981 Prince album!

With Purple Rain, Ive combined that with ATWIAD, which goes perfectly together. I get rid of Baby Im a Star, America, Tambourine, The Ladder and Temptation, and insert Another Lonely Xmas, 17 days, Shes always in my hair (long version), Girl (long version), Erotic City to make a super perfect 1984/1985 Prince record.

On Parade, all I do is remove Venus de Milo, other than that the record is completely flawless.

I could go on, but I think you get the point...

shocked You're really taken this idea 2 heart? Good 4 u then.

I don't do anything quite like that. I love a bunch of the tracks you're taking out, but that's just me. I'd play some albums back 2 back on occasion.
It was fun doing so with Dirty Mind-1999, seeing how he improves.
Overall, 1999 is too long for me, so I'd take out one of 2 tracks. But I recently put one back in... and I'd get skewed if I said which one I take out (clearly a fav. among u guys).

The most extreme cases of cutting I've done to save an album were recently with prince. I originally took out eye wanna melt with u, "Arrogance," "The Flow" and "3 Chains O' Gold"... then I accidentally got to eye Wanna Melt with U and I fell in love with the song and kept it. With this line-up, prince has become one of the funnest albums I own. Just one big party b4 things get really serious.
TGE, I've just cut out the NPG operators and Now. I'm considering "We March" for the cutting room, but I'll see what happens when/if I get back to the album soon.

Mixing/matching I've done on occasion, but haven't made quite a habit of. Although I'm working on 2 playlists of Musicology & 3121, one 4 his sophsticated tracks that show his age, and one to show off his personality (and that he really doesn't act, haha).
