Your favorite "type" of Prince song

I'm not talking genres here.
I'm talking about songs based on the type of mood he's in, etc.

Do you prefer him when:

He's charming (Mr. Good-night, Space)
He's angry (Darling Nikki, Eye Hate U)
He's depressed (Dolphin, Dark, Solo)
He's having a lot of fun (Guitar, Continental, The Max)
He's super sexy and/or ahem... nasty (Head, Sister)
He's exploring all kinds of emotions (Computer Blue, Live 4 Love, Automatic)

I could go on, but you've got the basic idea.

These days, I enjoy his more serious songs that make use of a full band.

His worst songs of the past few years have all been the ones that try to sound hip (Life 'O' the Party, anyone?) or make use of his outdated synths (Lolita).

His best newer songs have been his mature ones with rich, textured musicianship where he isn't trying to sound current (Somewhere Here On Earth).

I find that my favorite songs of Prince tend to be his slow songs sung with his beautiful falsetto and keyboards. He seems to be very sensual on tracks like Adore, When 2 R in Love, The Beautiful Ones, The One, The Arms of Orion, Condition of the Heart, Sometimes It Snows in April, Damn U, A Case of U... razz

I also like the naughty songs like Feel U Up, Let's Pretend We're Married, Tell Me How U Wanna be Done, Darling Nikki, Erotic City, Tambourine, Head, Soft and Wet, Lemon Crush lol

Definitely agree with that.
I love his mature sounding work from Planet Earth... just to show that he has experience and class.

I'm into all types, of course.
I'm going to make my own mix of his Charming tracks so I'll have them all 2gether.

But I think I'm more into his funner tracks (especially Continental). But I like a little of everything.

Thanx...

and so right... so much to choose from.

For some reason, I'm just more into "fun" Prince right now and don't want any of those "relationship"-type tracks. Just not in the mood for him right now and I love him 2 death. confused

But "Mr. Goodnight" did charm me when I listened 2 it earlier.

Sophistication & Personality (dating from 2004 to 2006). Not my TOP favorite types of his songs, but among them.

I actually made up 2 playlists, mixing/matchimg tracks from Musicology & 3121. And I got some pretty interesting results.
I think I prefer Sophistication, though.
I'll post those playlists if you're interested.
Although I might have to make a few changes, since some tracks fit in both.

I have to agree with you here. He is the master of love songs but his fun/sexy side can't be resisted either.

I'm with you on this one, mate. I love the bits in his songs which just make you think "what the hell...?" such as the fuzzy "come on, Cindy!" cries during "Cindy C", the bit at the end of "Chelsea Rodgers" where it just breaks up for no reason, "Cloreen Bacon Skin", "Crystal Ball"... the list goes on.

I don't care about mood types because that would mean I care about lyrics which are secondary to me. The thing that catches my ear first, or actually my ass first, is the music behind the lyrics.

That being said, I prefer the cold "Minneapolis Style" funk of the early 1980s full of synths, no horns, no jazz, no orchestras, and no 1960s or 1970s influence whatsover. I preferred it when Prince was being 100% "Prince" and not immitating James Brown, The Beatles, or Mozart.

I prefer when Prince is narrating a witty/sexy story just like in the songs Dorothy Parker, Dionne and Curios Child to name a few really showcase his unique sound.

I should also add that Prince made me his bitch with that baseline in777-9311:whip:

I like 2 kinds the best and they are usually related:

1. when he pushes punk ass use of a sound in your face, like the cool growling rhythmic bass of 3121 or the retro synth/drum swing minimalism of Lolita, the relentless cartoon slow electro blues beat of Bob George...

2. When he has an epic scifi-Prince-religo-fantasy concept like Eye No, Rebirth, Crystal Ball, Planet Earth, 3121...

It's cool how this thread is still going. It's just our luck that Prince has so much to offer.

To answer your question, I think that might be an "old" category of 'vulnerable' Prince, haha... that's cool.
I do like seeing him vulnerable, totally weak at the knees over a girl. I'll come up with my favorites in those category when I have more time.
