I thought it was more a case of 'There are Prince 'fans' whose main contribution to the Prince community is to pump themselves full of factoids, rumours and hate and then go around spreading it like butter, establishing a 'jump on everything'
political party which now has an official HQ (pun intended). The vast majority of fans of any artist are NOT obsessives who watch every move of their 'quarry'. They dig the music and are not pissed off about ANYTHING. They check out Prince's stuff as it comes out and if it don't move 'em, they skip to another section in the store because there are other things in the world to get upset about. Know what I'm sayin'? The obsessive fandom (fanaticism) is to be avoided at all costs. It goes NOWHERE. madhouseman said: welcome to the world of being a Prince fan. You are a newbie so you don't know that every 2-3 years, Prince does something that really PISSED off his fans, but the funny thing is that we enjoy his music enough that we don't want to give in. You're so on the money here with identifying a new species of 'superfan', the specs of whose computer has given them the feeling that they too are a creator by virtue of having installed software commonly used by creatives. This species is several leagues under the software DJ who mashes up a couple of tracks and believes that what's created is 'original'. In this case, there's some cultural justification and I'm one of those who would say that plagiarism can be a creative act but as for the 'software johnnies' who think that ripping a DVD is an act of community and creativity and that they're just liberating art for the masses, I'd say 'It all started when you thought that accessing a porn site was a substitute for having a girlfriend' Word. dv8xtc said: ok.
let's see: someone got upset because a video they "put together" [not CREATED] with software they didn't write on a computer they didn't invent, running on code they don't understand using music they didn't write and video footage they didn't shoot to put on a website they also didn't make to show to an audience derived from previously mentioned musicians, programmers, inventors and film-makers is complaining that someone whom they don't know, whose music they purchased and allegedly enjoyed; OWES THEM SOMETHING? | |
