I don't think its about griping but about controlling.

You just can't control people SO he thinks he can do it this way.

wow...um if u want to be a fan of someone whom u can always have access to everything they do u need to be a fan of some of these media whores like beyonce, rihanna 50 cent and all the other played out artists. Prince is a genius most of his works are masterpieces IMO and one of the things that keeps me a fan is the fact that he is so hard to get a hold of...It makes it more special when u dont know when u'll get to c him. I personally like prince's lil pop up surprises. If he was like everyone else in the music industry it would be like "oh theres prince AGAIN" U wouldnt be as excited when u see him on tv or in a magazine.I know I get excited weeks in advance markin the day on the calender when i know he will be on an awards show...now if u heard beyonce or pdiddy would be on an awards show u'd be like "Yea, whats new". Every1 is entitled to their own opinion, but as a prince fan since 14 yrs ago i'm there with him ALL THE WAY!

I LOVE YOU YOU SPEAK SENSE. PREPARE FOR PERSONAL INSULTS!

Prince is a fucking egotistical greedy swine riding high on Jehovah juice. He's talentless and crap now, motivated purely by money (despite his caring, sharing Christian values rolleyes). He's just a pathetic excuse for a human being who had so much he could have done, yet does not.

Thank god you added IMO because I just listened to 3121 two days ago. Unoriginal, nothing like the old stuff, or maybe too much like the old stuff with nothing new added, I can't decide. Lyrics that don't make sense "it's goin' down like the Berlin Wall" confuse, and tired, tired, tired. ZZZZZzzzzz

I wouldn't take it too personally. I doubt P even saw it. Probably some fam workin for him. Unfortuneately, this happenes a lot and is nothing new. For most of us we know this, so we really don't attempt creating new web pages or anything, because a lot of hard work and dedication never pay off when it comes to Prince. He's done this often enough with those he works with, then those he dates and when there seems to be no one else he can pick on, he goes after the fans. Sorry if I seem so cynical about how I view all of his relationships. I have yet to see one that has been long lasting and fruitful besides Larry Graham.

It's hard to be a new fan, because you WILL get caught up in a purple world of craziness and great music but when you explore the other parts like fan bases, his website, lack of promotion for new material, you see a whole different side to things. Oft times for me, it leaves me disheartened and puzzled to say the least.

Then, one day, I made the fateful decision to create a mash-up video using a well known pop stars video to the tune of Darling Nikki.

I worked for a day or so, working to get little parts right, working to make it look good. Once I was happy with my result, I uploaded it to youtube. Little did I know, I was contributing to what would ultimately be the reason Prince loses a huge percentage of fans at such a late stage in his turbulent career.

Of course, my video was removed in a day, much to my dissappointment and annoyance. What exactly did I do wrong? I credited him in the blurb section and I got some nice comments congratulating my creative effort. One even said "Prince would have liked this." Yeah....somehow I don't think he did.

I'm not familiar with all these new terms these days but isn't a "mash-up" the same as what we used to call "mixing" back in the day, which was taking various songs with the same drum tempo and blending and overlapping them together to create something new? It sounds like maybe what you created was a video version of what we used to calling mixing, maybe putting various video clips together that look like they would flow well together. It sounds like it would have been a very creative thing and very entertaining to watch.

Mixing is something interesting and creative for DJs to do to entertain entertain people rather than just playing one song after another. They are actually creating something themselves. The problem is, people don't know where to stop or draw the line when it comes to mixing. People making records started using mixing techniques to make new songs of their own and called it sampling. I was fine with it in the beginning and thought it was kind of fun. However, sampled songs soon started to take over and push anything by actual musicians out of the picture altogether. DJs can't even make a mix with new material anymore because they would be sampling someone else's sample. Someone has to create entirely new original music from scratch for DJs to mix and that someone would be musicians. People these days take a good thing such as mixing, take it to higher levels such as being the basic foundation of a song where it doesn't belong, and it snuffs out original new music from being made altogether.

I'm sure what you made was a very creative video version of what we used to call mixing. However, as creative as it may be, I'm sure someone like Prince who is a real musician and has a hard time getting radio airplay because of all the people dominating radio with sampled music, doesn't want his music to be used to further the problem and help it grow. I know yours was a video version of mixing and not many people make those but mixing music used to be something that not many people did either until people blew it out of proportion. I think Prince's problem lies more with people that are going to use his music to create something for themselves rather than just having his videos on youtube so he tries to get all his videos removed in attempt to stop it.

Iintentionally or not, Prince is erasing his work and history.

In this world of downloadable media, music rarely has a visual presence. No CD singles, no CD or vinyl album sleeves, no posters and rarely a full page magazine add. It’s hard for people to share or discover new music legally (when was the last time you picked up a CD on someone’s desk due to the curious sleeve design?).

Prince’s only real visible work is what remains on the store shelf which more often than not is his Warner Bros material rarely his NPG work.
Recently I stumbled across the Batdance video in a download and it reminded me why I enjoyed Prince’s work so much (not just his music). It was fun, easily accessible, inventive. Subsequently I sought out the Lovesexy concert that is no longer available and Prince's performance won over my wife, she loves to watch and listen to his work now new and old; she even works out to his music.

I gotta add, neither of us worship him in anyway shape or form, we simply enjoy and appreciate his work.

Maybe he has some master plan to re release it all, I hope so but I doubt it and certainly won't hold my breath. He’s alienating many of his fans and some of the public who were just discovering him (much like his slave and Tora Tora antics did), but now he’s making it difficult for people to know why he was so great.

And lets not forget, so much of his recent work is unavailable now (One Night Alone Piano CD, The Truth, NPGMC Ahdio releases, Chocolate Invasion, Slaughterhouse CNote, etc).

In the end it isn’t about liking or disliking his music or good or bad business, it’s just that Prince himself seems to be taking the fun out of enjoying his new and old work .

To be blunt: I think Prince is seriously overdosing on his own ego and self importance. I’m sure there are better ways to exercise his rights and control the bootlegged material.

It’s sad but, if Prince passes who will be the keepers of his legacy? Like it or not:

WARNER BROS. RECORDS

I’m damn sure he wouldn’t want that.

If Prince wants to be forgotten and irrelevant let him. He can’t tour forever.

Rewi

This is an interesting topic indeed, and one that has numerous sides to it.

On one hand Prince (and WB) is within his legal rights to decide where he wants his work to be used, and that includes the internet as well. It might be difficult for newer fans to understand that, when they have grown up in a world where everything is available within minutes from the internet.

I can see this from Prince's point of view as well, because I've started in the old era when it was practically impossible for average fans to get a hold of any material Prince didn't want you to have. Bootlegs were only available at specialised stores where 99% of people never went; the only videos you got were either the official ones sold in your local store, or the ones you managed to tape yourself from television; the only photos you saw were the ones your monthly music journal happened to print. Who's to say which way the world should be?

I've been a fan of Prince for a quite a while (around 14 years), and I have enough respect for him to let him decide for himself how he wants his public image to appear. I don't have a desperate need to watch his videos from YouTube, so I can live with that. I don't actually need to take pictures at the O2 arena during the concerts (even though I've taken them at other concerts), si it's easy to respect his wish not to photograph the event.

As long as he keeps releasing music, I'll keep buying it and listening whether it's good or not, and that's the main thing. Many people in this day and age seem to forget that.

ok.
let's see:
someone got upset because a video they "put together" [not CREATED] with software they didn't write on a computer they didn't invent, running on code they don't understand using music they didn't write and video footage they didn't shoot to put on a website they also didn't make to show to an audience derived from previously mentioned musicians, programmers, inventors and film-makers
is complaining that someone whom they don't know, whose music they purchased and allegedly enjoyed; OWES THEM SOMETHING?

You think your buck gives you a right to that which isn't yours? [the glory of living "the creative life" and "spirit" required to make the sounds you're sucking your unearned joy out of?]

...I suppose you "own" the cd/file and the first 10 years of his life are "owned" by some strange delusion called "a corporation" and u folks say u "luv his spirituality"[!!!!!]
...what the hell do u think he's erasing?????
EVERYTHING IS STILL THERE FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO LOOK FOR IT.
HE IS [has] RESCUING HIS LIFE FROM AN ABOMINATION CALLED "THE CORPORATION"...

I am sure this is too abstract for little peabrain fanheads, but lets look at it this way: 200 years from now should warner brothers [a group of nasty, greed f*ks] be making $ off of bob marley, marvin gaye, P, miles, stevie etc so dumb@ss fans can say "I'm so cool CAUSE so and so IS a genius"? !!!!!

If ya'll had any brains: ya'll would collect P's stuff, keep it OFFLINE [meaning off of corporate or $$ sites] and keep his OLD legacy alive [in the context of what it meant to YOU] and well outside the reach of something that really ought not have the power to dictate ones circumstances...and be glad he hasn't hit the "O.D." wall and is alive and well.....[I ain't religious, but I seem to remember this cat as being "serious" about that intention...or perhaps I should say "sincere"..[confused, mistaken or otherwise ain't the point...though of course...it is...if u dig it..]

in any case: god is good the devil is bad...now what do u suppose is the devil?...and what exactly should your hero do that morning he wakes up and realises the devils d1ck has been in his @ss since day one while he was dancin around entertaining y'all at the risk of his libido, creative audacity and verve?

It would seem: he would HAVE TO DISAVOW HIS PAST...HOWEVER "HEARTBREAKING" [I WANNA PUKE] IT IS FOR YA'LL, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK THIS DID TO HIM: THE PROUD PRINCE: HUMILIATED BY THE IRONIC SPECTACLE OF HAVING SERVED HIS ENEMY AS A PURPLE PRANCING FOOL...

..LOOKS TO ME LIKE P FOUND THE NERVE TO FACE IT AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT [RIGHT OR WRONG] AT A COST YOU WILL NEVER EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE...

..and appears to be attempting to create a whole new legacy based on a different premise!!! [will it work? is his new pov right? do I enjoy it?...who f*cking cares?:HE'S FREE!]

...and in all of the nonsense written NO ONE WANTS TO SMACK THIS SH1T DOWN ON PRINCIPLE? [..this is beyond having ANYTHING to do with "P"and whether he is, or is not, this or that..this is naked, putrid evil pretending injury while actually committing the crime...I would say "wow"...but it is so much later than that...]

let's see:
miles, jimi, mj, bird, p, coltrane, jaco, mozart etc spend the better part of their lives in the deep excruciating study, creation and fulfillment of sonic manipulation in the service of expressing a thought, feeling or mood and some dumb@ss has the nerve to equate their silly "mashup" [?!!!!!] bullsh1t with the rigors of serious creative and intellectual pursuit, and folks reading this bullsh1t think it's ok?
...and actually engage in pseudo intellectual debate?

This is exactly like seeing some helpless person being molested while the crowd stands around discussing the molestors complaints about the molestee not inviting them to f*ck em in the @zz...

are u folks insane? [nevermind...dumb question...this is, after all, teh internets]

Why don't we cut to the chase:
"I spent $19.99 on something someone made and now I am upset because I feel they should also suk my dik and let me fuk them in the @ss or I will think badly of them and to show how powerful I am, I will post my truly disgusting nonsense and they can't stop me...

Tell ya what folks:

Will you be happy when the last musician [remember them?], the last painter ['member those folks with paint berets?], the last dancer[no...not lap dancer], the last poet[remember them?] turn their backs on your f*cked up @sses and leave you to the digitaly enhanced bullsh1t of "DJ's[?] "rappers"[?] and repackaged remixes of "originals" long since forgotten?

[say: ain't that kid everyones is diggin JUST doing an imitation of MJ?.[an uninspired one at that]..and as interesting [not really] as any number of P's influencees may seem to be: anybody got any idea of what kind balls it takes to be a 5 foot tall horny, seemingly romantic, spiritual brown person with a keen creativity running around on a stage in leg warmers and panties and having the nerve to suggest he wasn't a homo? [not as in "denial" as in "whats the bfd"? is- isn't: who cares?]..took a lot of heart...especially with the intended goal being "popstardom"..there are easier ways to do it ya know....right usher, jinuine,3000,britney,jessica,yadayadayada ad infinitum...

..again: this is probably trolling...and I do this against my better judgment: but: HOW DO YOU FOLKS LOOK IN THE MIRROR?
NOBODY OWES YOU SH1T FOR THE MEDIOCRE BULLSH1T LIVES YOU ARE LIVING WHILE PRETENDING THAT LISTENING [!!!?] TO THIS OR THAT PERSON IS ANY REFLECTION ON WHAT YOU ARE..he may or may not be a genius: u can listen to him 24/7 and you ARE STILL JUST A DUMB@SS WASTE OF SPACE COMPLAINING INSTEAD OF "BEING"...

..and if P "releases" absolute crap for the rest of his life he has achieved something fans never do: he lived his life according to his dream and that takes balls most of y'all can't even begin to imagine.

...fans suck @ss..and are clearly insane..[which of course makes me a fool...but this needed to be said a loooong time ago..]

wow purplesweat.

well written clapping

while not everyone agree's with everything PS has said- we should respect her right 2 say it!

that post must have taken a long time 2 compose- and it shows a lot of passion!

just because she has only been a fan for on one year-doesnt mean that she is any less passionate about P than the rest of us.
I 4 one vividly remember how excited i was when i 1st discovered P, and although the shine has worn off a little over the years(with family/work etc taking over) - i am still passionate-but i've been lucky- i discovered him in the good ol days- 23 yrs ago-PS wasnt even born then!

i think that it is great that a new generation has discovered Prince- and they should b able 2 witness some of the old footage that we were privileged 2 watch 1st time around- hey- i'd sure like 2 c some of those old clips again as well!
if its not available commercially- where else- apart from the internet- are they able 2 view it- and having this avenue taken away from them must very disheartening- besides- arent video clips "promotional material" put out 2 sell records hmmm

I was excited 4 Purplesweat when she finally discovered UTCM- it was a topic in chat 4 ages lol
it was great 2 "see" her joy in this new discovery- UTCM is readily available commercially- but what about all the classic videos from his vast back catalogue- it would be such a shame if she (and new fans) never get 2 witness them as well.

Like it or not- the internet is here 2 stay- and that is how a lot of young ppl find /discover new things. if P isnt on there, they will soon discover some one else- and move on- and that would be such a shame

prince has done some strange things over the years- and yes- fans have stuck by him- but they wont b around 4ever.
4 the Prince legacy 2 live on - the baton will have 2 b passed(eventually) 2 a new generation- what if they arent interested in taking it?

twocents
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret

FUCK.

YouTube is a bit of fun, ok someone is making money from it and its not Prince. So what? As if Prince's actions will stop things like You Tube ? Prince is thinking backwards in an attempt to stop people appreciating him. If I want to watch a concert video from him 20 years ago, I cant buy it, why cant I see it on YouTube? What money is Prince losing? I want to see what he did in the past and on demand, there are other artists I cant do this for, why cant I do it with Prince? What makes him so special? He isnt. Ive bought his new music, its crap, particularly PE: Its horrible, I want to see old live clips that I used to like but cant buy anymore. Why not? What has he to gain by repression? Nothings. Its stupid.

As a fan of more than 20 years, I have earned the right to go onto YouTube and see some "Princey" things. Im still buying his new crap, Im still watching his videos on TV and paying to go to his concerts - why cant I see his old stuff or mashed up stuff with him in it on YouTube? What he is doing is pathetic - there have been other moments in the past where he has pissed me off - but this strikes as stupid vain and arrogant.

Sort yourself out Prince. Your losing nothing by being on YouTube, we are losing a lot. But then again you dont care about us, your fans - only yourself right? Its always been about YOU. Get with it, the fans ARE YOU. You are NOT music, the FANS are music. we made YOU, without us you are nothing. You have talent, but so do millions of other people in the world, its the fans that have supported you throughout your career when others have ignored and made fun of you, we stick by you, and this is what you do to us?. Banning something to your fans is backwards and pathetic. Give it up and focus on your music (something you once did wonderfully).

NOBODY OWES YOU SH1T FOR THE MEDIOCRE BULLSH1T LIVES YOU ARE LIVING WHILE PRETENDING THAT LISTENING [!!!?] TO THIS OR THAT PERSON IS ANY REFLECTION ON WHAT YOU ARE..he may or may not be a genius: u can listen to him 24/7 and you ARE STILL JUST A DUMB@SS WASTE OF SPACE COMPLAINING INSTEAD OF "BEING"...

..and if P "releases" absolute crap for the rest of his life he has achieved something fans never do: he lived his life according to his dream and that takes balls most of y'all can't even begin to imagine.

...fans suck @ss..and are clearly insane..[which of course makes me a fool...but this needed to be said a loooong time ago..]

that was crazy!!! But I love it. yes we live in a completely greedy needy world. Prince fans get a grip. Prince owes u nothing. He has every right to conduct his business as he sees fit. If you are so bent out of shape about him doing him, u do u and take a walk. Its just that damn simple. U guys act like crack addicts turning on the dealer.

He owes u nothing. He makes music u buy it (or not). Anything else is just a product of your obsession. U can go away Prince will be fine. He doesn't know u. You're just another person in a faceless mass of people. Why do u think u are so important? if u like Prince so much why do u insult him? That's not love that's obsession. U want to control him (but u can't). So many of u are like Mark chapman (the man that killed lennon). U let your obsession turn to hate because what u obsess over is a human being with his own goals and thoughts. Prince doesn't originate in your brain. Do u realize how crazy u sound? Who gives a fuck that u have been a fan for 20 years! That's been your choice. I have been a fan for 30 years. I don't worry about his decisions, I have ny own to make. He could get a sex change and start doing country music in chinese. I would shrug my shoulders. Its his life. Find your own.

Im not an obsessed fan, I havent heard any of his music since I bought PE. I hardly have given the guy a second thought since the concert last month. I dont even have any of his posters on my wall, or anywhere. I was just incensed to see that he is taking harmless stuff off YouTube.

To compare me to a killer like Mark Chapman is ridicolous. Im afraid its now you who sounds insane, yeah I was angry but I dont want to kill anyone.

As far as Im concerned the guy is out there, in the spotlight. He wants fans, he wants us to appreciate him, but it seems now its only on his terms. For me thats a contradiction. If he wants to be forgotton, then so be it. But he wants us to love his music, and then deny us a few simple pleasures (youtube), then I think this is all ego and self love and not fair on the fan.

Now that we are fighting about who has been a fan the longest, i have been for 20 years (1978-1998), I have been a part time fan ever since, buying all his records, going to concerts, look at the org, etc but it doesnt mean that makes your point any stronger than mine. Im just saying its an insult to his fans that stuck by him that he wants to "control" what we are listening to. Hey, I dont mind if he doesnt want us to buy bootlegs, thats his right - but YouTube is just a bit of fun - what is he to gain by denying us this?? its all about control. Control of fans, those that have stayed loyal and contant. Control of what? Its pointless.

Its not simply about he making music and us buying it. Its not food to be consumed. I can buy a peice of crap record, listen to it, throw it away and never care again. With Prince records, they are part of the "collection", always cherished no matter how bad they are. Im sure there are many others like me - perhaps they are killers too?

You obviously are such a big fan that you probably call yourself a fam and blindly accept everything he does as correct. But I dont. I do beleive he owes his fans some type of appreciation he shouldnt be fucking us about.

I thought youtube had no prince videos available to begin with. why bother?

there are other sites like youtube, much less controlled where I have discovered fantastic live footage for instance. you should try those wink

I respect prince´s right to fight this battle but i think it´s quite pointless really. this whole internet piracy business has really gotten out of hand and princey will not be able to defeat this monster.

...next time y'all wanna know why the world is such a sh1thole: remember this creature and what they live by. ...and should you find yourself in sympathy with this distorted pretense of virtue: remember: P playing 250 million instruments blindfolded with a monsterous 30" c0ck STILL ONLY MAKES YOU A PARASITIC PIECE OF SH1T....and don't anyone f*ckin dare suggest he is "less" than whatever it was that your f*cked up fantasy needed him to be...

beyond disgusting...
...and yes: I know this creature warrents no response: but P and his kind have paid and been paying a price they don't deserve for this crap to "stand" unchallenged on a supposed "fan site".....I don't care how much so and so has or doesn't have and whether they did such and such to u know who, u know how, u know where...twice
