Prince is a control freak. I just don't think he would do all of this if he was a new and upcoming artist. He's on the other side of success so he can demand whatever his little heart wants.

Prince entering the market today would post stuff on youtube himself to create a buzz.

true, it's a great marketing tool, as is myspace, etc.
i hope he doesn't ruin it for all the new up-and-comers
or basically just for people who want to share God's gift freely

C'mon hes not chiping away at anything, this is nothing new to old time prince fans, from day one he had me WTF?-?.... its just another day at princeworld.

I let the music do the talking,.... granted, its not as coherent as in the old days but i listen to his new music politely like i do my grandpa.

From a bussiness standpont its basically the right thing to do, they way hes doing it is not.

A good PR man could tell you to go to hell and make you look forward to the trip.

Ya know, it's okay for Prince fans to be upset about this for whatever their reasons are. It's okay for Prince to go out and try to protect his image. I don't get why people seem to have a problem with the ones who are upset. WTF do you care for?

I don't particularly care, it's not like it affects me in any way. But I think the guy is shooting himself in the foot in a big way. Right now when his stock is so high, he throws another high-profile childish temper tantrum that reminds the casual audience why they stopped paying attention to him in the late 80s/early 90s.

Some of Prince's causes, are noble and worthy. This one, is not. You cannot control everything, some things you have to just let be. And this is such a small, petty argument.

I agree nod

It's funny...remember back in the mid-90s when Prince was touting the Internet, insisting that it would mean the death of the major record companies....insisting that artists could sell and promote their own music on-line,and have more control over it? He seemed thrilled with the possibilities.

But now, things are much different. He seems to have had a change of heart. The Internet gives people the FREEDOM to download and enjoy music ON THEIR OWN TERMS.Basically, people can now do almost anything they want on-line,in the privacy of their own home.File-sharing has become a way of life.People can hear a new album before it's even released.Prince can't stand this. He's a notorious control freak, but this is something that even he can't control or dominate. The Internet became bigger and more powerful than he ever imagined.I recall a late-90s interview where he was actually gloating because the record labels are losing money due to file-sharing.But now he realizes that it's affecting his bank account, too lol He's pissed.I guess it's true: we need to be careful about what we wish for.

I just think it´s stupid. YouTube is a great way of having new fans.
My friends send me links to the videos os their fave artists, and some of them I like a lot to the point of wanting to know their music more.

The advantage of YouTube is that you can know an artist without having to download heavy videos or buying albums. IF you like him/her, then you buy the official stuff. My 2 cents.

I don't think its too late to try and change things, this is just the beginning!!
Either the entertainment industry change things, or figure out a way to still make money in the music industry.

You still got to pay people who work in any aspect of the industry from the studio personnel the musicians, etc. all the way down the list.

Its gonna be hard to find good people to work for free for prince or any other artist for the sole purpose of the appreciation of the fans and their free shit.

You know as well as I do that Prince has built his career around mystery and controversy. He also likes to appear larger than life. He has tons of unreleased music that has made it's way to the public somehow. I wouldn't be surprised if Prince leaked it out himself just to keep his fans interested in him throughout the years and make his music hard to find and a challenge. When you place these things on a website and fans can easily access them whenever they want and in as much quantity as they want, it kind of knocks Prince down to an average everyday person. It takes the challenge out of getting Prince material and eventually the mystery out of Prince as a person. I can see why Prince is doing what he's doing. He's never been the average Joe and if people were to find out that he was a normal person just like them, they would get bored with him. At least I would.

I've messed around with youtube a little bit at work (the few times that the blocks have been off the computer). If I had access on a daily basis, I would eventually get pissed because the videos are stuck in a computer and I would want them on a DVD or VCR tape so I could play them in a large TV with stereo sound and own the videos myself. Since people love youtube so much, there is obviously a demand for music videos. They should be focusing their anger at video networks like VH1, MTV, and BET for not playing music videos anymore. I'd much rather the videos be played on TV so I can record them. Hell, I've got 34 DVDs of "Soul Train" since they have been airing the old episodes. I would love to have some old music videos also for my collection.....but I don't want them stuck inside a computer.

Lastly, as vainandy pointed out, prince is not around today because of youtube and because of avatars

Avatars and youtube are here BECAUSE of people like prince.

I find it funny that people think this will be the end of prince or his fandom.
he was here before youtube AND the internet, and was surviving just fine.

Sure he needs get over himself and find a way to embrace it on terms he feels comfortable with, and the same goes for all of the entertaiment industry and everything else thats gets traded freely through the net, music, movies, books and software, the list goes on.

I know it will all get resolved somehow because there is so much money on the line,..... and metalica and prince may just be obscure footnotes ....when all is said about the early stages of the internet.

As much as I enjoy watching all that stuff and having access to it. Honestly, I'm surprised myself on how much it doesn't bother me what he's doing. I'm just curious as to what happens next. Maybe it's the whole "soap opera" effect that I like. Drama, drama, drama.

Prince is not seeking to enforce any rights that are guaranteed to him by law. Just because people are used to stealing doesn't make it right. All this talk of how the internet can't be controlled is just bullshit. China manages it quite well. All those old and informed enough, know that home taping was, and remains illegal. The fact that it couldn't be policed and was very rampant didn't make legal. So prince went through all that trouble and ridicule to wrest control from Warners, only to give it to his 'fans'? How does allowing unfettered use of your product and image equate to controlling it, whether it is being done by a publicly owned corporation or by the public at large? The next time you come home and find that you've been burgled, blame yourself for not having allowed access to your possessions in the first place. For sure, suing youtube and all the others is inconvenient because we got hooked, but they are are the ones breaking the law. As itunes proved, people will buy legally if the product is available. It is to be hoped that Prince will make stuff available in the future. And if he doesn't, thats his right.
