Do yourselves a favour - go buy the An Evening with Kevin Smith DVD where he tells the most incredible half hour long story about Prince. It gives you the most unique insight into who he is that I have ever seen.

I love the man, but his obsesiveness over his 'image' rights and such is ott.3121.com is about as inviting as a slap to the face, there is nothing on there worth registering for. Maybe if he had made himself a little more accesable in the dvd market in the first place he would get some sympathy and justification. But over a 20 year career how many live performances can you purchase?. I live Outside London and this years 21 Nights was the first in 10 years, so what chance do i have of seeing him. He is a human being and not a god, musicians should showcase themselves as much as possible to the fans and for his own sake.

The other night i watched a video on You Tube of a performance from the Lovesexy tour and found it amazing that i could finally 'experience' a performance from a time when he was most popular, and a sound that i much preffer to his new stuff. My advice to Prince: if your going to do this then start remastering your back catalougue & concert videos. create worthwhile website content and merchandice.

rant over
Much Love

I know what u're sayin and this is often the rationale but it's a bit like saying about a neighbour who just got burgled 'Well...you know if only they'd made their big TV a little more accessible'

smile

What's happening is the contradiction between fans wanting to protect their own private property and not wanting Prince to protect his.

But when it escalates to the kind of hatred that you can see around some people's heads and this turns into a kind of 'lobby', well I want to see this lobby kicked into touch. It's way out of order.

What a dick! The UK shows seemed to be going well, Planet Earth was a weak album, but at least it was a new album, and the Super Bowl show is still being talked about. Now he's back to controlling, paranoid, long-haired faggot mode.

He'll be after people playing their purchased videos in their home DVD and VHS players next! Better enjoy your VHS of Sexy MF while you still can without threats of legal action from his lawyers!

No...you weren't aggressive at all.
It's just that these fan sites tend to get sheep-herded into two notional camps, one of which stereotypes people into haters and hands them a set of things to hate about Prince and the other which stereotypes people as sycophants and hands them The Bible.

Unfortunately, the sheep/herd thing creeps in all over the joint to the point where there's a complete polarisation and eventually, as is increasingly and disturbingly the case at HQ, the stereotyped are effectively encamped in one or other position.

What's amazed me since I came back on the Prince boards is how this tendency has degraded awareness of where THEY personally fit into the scheme of things.
And when it comes to the 'free content provided by users' issue (YouTube, Flickr etc), it's clear that a lot of people have been duped by these big corps into thinking that the likes of YouTube are about some kind of noble cause.

They're not. They want stuff for free off the producers and labels and rights owners and have cleverly mobilised the general 'Want things for free' to consolidate their position. So they become worth billions while THOSE WHO PRODUCE THE MF WORK THAT GIVES THEIR SITES VALUE IN THE FIRST PLACE GET NOTHING BUT A HARD TIME FOR DOING SO.

The Prince who is standing up to be counted right now among the artists (and users) who will evolutionise the 'web 2.0 revolution' is the same Prince all the haters 'miss'. This time, it ain't just a stage show.

Word.

OhhhhhKay!! whofarted

Prince is going to waste precious time TRYING to sue youtube, ebay, and pirate bay because he doesn't want us to watch or post his videos instead of using the internet and 3121.com to his advantage!

As much as I love Prince and I do! I've said it before, him and his camp really need a dose of what life would be like WITHOUT us, all of US!!

US being the fans that supported him BEFORE his yesmen and asskissers jumped on board, the ones who supported him through the times when mainstream wouldn't have anything to do with him!!

His camp is in serious need of a REALITY check! We've tolerated their special brand of nonsense for far too long! We are all enablers and it's time for an intervention!!

As long as we keep taking it, they're going to keep dishing it!

Apparently, his camp doesn't WANT him to have our support! So, why keep giving it to him?

Maybe, when he sees that his yesmen and asskissers don't have his best interest at heart, he'll start taking his real supporters, US, his fans seriously!

If he doesn't appreciate US, WHY on Earth should WE keep appreciating him?

Replace the word 'Prince' with the word 'YouTube' and you got my agreement. Except that with Prince you know you're paying your money to somebody who's gonna fund his next project with it whereas with YouTube you pay nothing so they can incorporate you as a constituent in their next financial statement to the stock market.

"so long, suckaz"

excessex - i agree with what your saying, mate. Once you become complacent of this illegal material being made available you loose sight of the overall picture. Thanks for that. He is justified in what i was doing, i should not have said that. If there were more video material made available AND an agreement with the sites to police this kinda content, then at least it will a victory for Prince and his fans.

I think Prince suing sites like Youtube, ebay, etc is more about sanitizing his legacy than about money. Of course he is saying that it's just about copyright infringement, which we know he is passionate about, but I really think he is also trying to erase out of the masses mind all the sexually charged videos, performances and songs from his past. He probably doesn't want to be remembered as 'His Royal Badness" or as the dude that jumped from speakers and humped stages in his prime. He would have a hard time doing that with the public having free reign over his back work. Everyday he has to wonder if a bootleg performance of him performing "Head" in nothing more than a bikini and a pair of boots will pop up somewhere on the internet.

Most of the videos that his fans are longing for will never be for sale or available for viewing on 3121.

I agree with all the reality check claims. Seriously, why bother? Have you not learned anything from Metallica and what happened to their fan base when the band became cyber pricks? Metallica was the joke of the internet. You can not stop this, and people will laugh at you for trying. Sites that probably never had anything to do with Prince or his music are now spreading the word of what a joke this is. Point in case: http://www.techcrunch.com...mbol-tool/

Don't get me wrong. I love Prince, and without a doubt I believe he is a musical genius, but in all honesty after its release now I understand why Planet Earth was a give-away in the UK. I played it for the first time at work and less than half way through the album I was so embarrassed I had to turn it off.

This just makes it more stupid. In a time especially when bands are embracing the online content sharing trend, to come out and make a mockery of yourself is just plain stupid. Good on you. I am sure you will be the winner out of this, especially after all the formerly known as phenomena.

The short version of this post:

Stupid, stupid, stupid...

If he didn't want to be remembered that way, he shouldn't have done it in the first place. And there's already a pretty naughty performance of Head circulating on those sites.

QUESTION - If he's so adamant about having copyright material as his only - WHY did he give away his SONGS for free? neutral mad

£31.21 including the CD?

But I guess he should have thrown in the keys to The Vault as well.

This 'Prince is ungrateful to his fans' bandwagon has no wheels. It's just endless repetitions of somebody else's opinion (I'm not even looking at you, HQ)

That's the burglary bandwagon that got YOU.
The neighbour's been burgled and somebody whispers in your ear
'They never even watched that TV anyway'

Plus...He didn't release 'The Hits' DVD.
The company that owned them did.
His original contract allwed him to veto 'Greatest Hits' albums and he always did until negotiations came up to trade this option for a 'get-out' release with TMBGITW

Preach on brutha/sista..

We're being railroaded (further) into conceiving of ourselves as nothing other than consumers.
A little bit of history: In the 90's, the new digital and interactive media were widely hailed as being potentially the move from 'consumer culture' to 'producer culture'. This was at a time when the corporates were going 'The interwhaaa?', a time when the internet was you and I and the sky. The cost of tech was falling so everybody could have what Hollywood used to dream of having. It was a time when media could have been liberated from the multinationals. (What am I saying 'was'...that's STILL what time it is.)

The Web 1.0 boom 'dot com bubble' was when the corps turned everything into shop-fronts. The Web 2.0 'revolution' was supposed to be about 'users as producers' but via the corps like YouTube quickly became 'Stick some content up here and we'll collect your money' and soon progressed 'Stick somebody else's content up here and you'll collect the blame while we collect the money'

Think it ain't?

NO WAY. I read the article and.... NO WAY. eek omg It's kinda like a cycle? He comes into the spotlight, and once he's there for a while, he goes off about something regarding his privacy. In a way I think he's right for doing it- YouTube should be more careful with the videos they allow to be uploaded onto the sight. Isn't most of Prince's stuff copyrighted anyways? So there's already that against YouTube- and the article said he isn't the only one in the lawsuit either. Are they going to do anything to the users who uploaded the videos? hmmm OMG- wat if they send FBI- like ppl and steal their computers and leave them with a crappy one? eek neutral

Prince should make more DVDs of his shows available if he doesn't like people to go on YouTube. Ah- this is getting frustrating.

Alrighty...

1. Prince sues fans!
2. Prince sues fan sites!
3. Prince releases music that only fans would enjoy and PAY for...The Rainbow Children, NEWS, Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth!
3. Prince sues fan site for posting "streaming" videos! Housequake.com
4. Prince sues fan for taking pictures of him at an airport!
5. Prince has a website that he doesn't utilize to get his music and videos out the way his control freak of a self would like!
6. Prince finds ways to give away his music now because he knows that no one other than his fans would buy it.
7. The majority of people who went to see Prince in Vegas and London were...yeah FANS! The supporters who've supported him all the time! Not just when he's been on top, which truthfully is because of our continued support! It it weren't for US...he'd have been a distant memory, a washed up has been...in the 90's!!

Harsh!! Yes!! But true as hell none the less and SOMEBODY needs to make Prince and his camp of asskissers, realize that!!
