Well it is a matter of intellectual property. And from a AFM (Musicians Union) standpoint downloading (Even though you can't download You Tube videos uh, unless the audio is uh, hijacked.) is hurting the Musicians Performance Trust Fund and publishing income.
As Q said: "The internet is so big you can't police it". It's like Napster. Everybody thought after Napster was shut down file sharing would cease and it didn't. Pop Singer sued by Hendrix Estate. (AP) Pop star Prince who recently sued the world for breathing the same air is being sued by the estate of the late Jimi Hendrix. Prince wore black bell bottom pants with white buttons like the ones in Jimi's "Hear My Train A Coming" clip of him playing 12 string guitar. We caught up with legendary drummer Buddy Miles who was very upset over Prince's use of the color purple. "Purple was Jimi's color. We used to hang out at The Scene Club in New York and it was purple all the way. Well, you know, purple and blond because we loved blondes. Prince is a bad brother but Jimi was all about purple baby!" Drummer Mitch Mitchell from the original Experience had this to say. "Me girlfriend dragged me to see this Prince film "Grafitti Bridge" and I thought it was going to be a tribute to Jimi's "Rainbow Bridge". So we sit through this awful acting and all of a sudden I hear me drums! I thought: "Little Miss Lover"? Maybe it is a tribute to Jimi then. Then Prince starts singing "Bang Bang" or some rubbish. I called his studio and he has this deep voice. I thought he would sound like a chick or something. And he goes: "Don't worry. We'll cut you a check!" and he hung up. And I haven't seen a pound yet!" Little Richard had this to say: "What! Prince suing the Internet? Wooo! Good! I hope he wins. You know why? 'Cause if he wins that means I'm suing everybody. I'm suing Pat Boone. I'm suing the ghost of Elvis. I'm suing the Universe. Why? 'Cause they all got it from me." Entertainment Tonight has hired a "Ghost Whisperer" to contact Jimi: "I can feel Jimi's presence. He is calm. He says Anna Nicole Smith is really groovy." (Mary Hart) "Can you ask him about the Prince lawsuit?" "Sure..... He says he likes Prince and he's not mad or anything. Wait Mary, Jimi says someone wants to say hi." "Well all right you squares. Everybody buy my book "Memoirs Of A Super Freak". If I were there I'd be working on the movie with Denzel playing me. Or s*** I'm so good looking I'd play myself. Why are you guys contacting Jimi? Excuse me for a minute. "Anna, put my cloud dust back. I'm serious. What about the disgusting price of tickets on e bay. for those of us who have to work their backside off are lifelong fans and want to see the shows, but hey we can't get tickets because we are always at work, there are none available for us (ticketmaster)but hey you can buy some from mr rip off on e bay, 5 minutes later for huundreds of pounds. I thought the idea of having tickets priced at 31.21 was so more people could afford to see the shows? Why should thes people be allowed to buy them , then sell them off immediately to the highest bidder?

What worries me even more: Who will Prince sue after he's done with youtube, e-bay,etc.
Will it still be safe to play his songs in the privacy of my home? Can I utter his name in public without his written permission? Is it okay to sing along if I hear his song 'Little red corvette?' Can I still wear my purple sweater? Can I still watch the classical stage-hump in Purple Rain? Do I have to turn the volume down, when he says;'Where are you? Answer me motherfucker!' Do I have to live in fear from now on, that the PPP (Paisley Park Police) is coming to arrest me, if I don't ask the Prince Camp for permission to watch or listen to anything remotely related to the Purple One? Somebody, please, please tell me what the hell is wrong? (oops, if that sounded like a line of Prince's Computer Blue, I am asking for forgiveness. I didn't mean to disrespect the Copyright.) love the one who is Love!

Sorry, but I really don't understand why some people are taking this so personal. It's ok to not agree with what he's doing, but going out the box about it is a bit much. If he's making a bad decision by suing youtube, pirate baby, ebay, or even the whole damn internet, it's only going to hurt him...not me or any random fan of his. It's his property to do what he wants with it.

On the flip side, Prince DID give away (for free) his latest album earlier this year. It's like two extremes, one moment he's doing something really cool, the next, he's acting like a total a**hole suing everybody.
What I don't understand is why more artists don't take advantage of YouTube and post their all their music videos to it willingly. Like someone else on here mentioned earlier, YouTube is this generations MTV. People complain about YouTube making money off of artists material, but what they seldom acknowledge is that YouTube is providing free hosting of video content. Take advantage of it! The NPGMC didn't pan out, and was likely closed due to it being unprofitable. Instead of footing the bill for hosting all of those videos, why didn't he just put them over at YouTube. It's free advertising!

It's free advertising! It was really cool, and clever on his part. But not particularly altruistic me thinks, as I'm sure he probably got paid more than what he would have made based on album sales in record stores. Did he actually add it to the concert ticket sale as well?

Youtube have crossed the copyright line a lot. Serves them right if you ask me.
I'm siding with Prince on this one, and any other artist who doesn't want a huge company like Google stealing from them.

Well, i can't speak for everyone but the reason that this pisses me off so bad is it's just another example in a LONG string of examples where Prince in some way, shape or form goes after fans. Like when he went after the websites and Uptown Magazine. He FORGOT how FREAKING LUCKY he is to a) have the lengthy career that he does and b) a rabid fanbase that thinks so highly of him to create websites, magazines, etc ALL just to talk about him. He FORGOT that it's the FANS that put him where he is. And instead of PREACHING to us, or trying to tell us HOW and WHERE we should see/view/listen to him, he should APPRECIATE us the way we have APPRECIATED him over the years. that's what's got my boxers in a bunch. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

Directly? Not yet! I am gonna keep an eye on my mailbox, though! Housequake.com is not a 2 billion dollar company and he's made them stop using his pictures for avatars. What's going on here has nothing to do with money or copyright issues! It's about destroying Prince's career for good this time and it's either self imposed or orchestrated by someone else!

And they do this out of the goodness of their own heart, of course? YouTube is built on infringing copyright, and they rely on people not enforcing their rights. Most of the user-generated stuff on there is dreadful, and YouTube wouldn't be worth anything if it was only legal stuff on there.
