Hello! I'm curious... What percentage of the Warner record sales go to Prince directly? Do I have any reason to feel guilty for "supporting" Warner by purchasing his earlier albums?

Why feel guilty?

Prince's past decisions to enter into contractual arrangements are his business. He continues to benefit financially from sales of his catalogues as he does each time his songs are broadcast or performed. I'm sure if he didn't want his past works to be purchased, he would exercise whatever rights he had to attempt to prevent them being sold and, failing that, he'd possibly even make some protest demanding his right to respect his wishes.

Hey! Thanks for the response. In answer to this ^^^ question, I'm just reflecting on the animosity surrounding the Warner-split. I wasn't quite sure how to gauge the outcome of the "Slave" period, but your post answered that. Thanks again!

Don't feel guilty: if you are new to the Prince experience then you would be missing the true meaning of the Prince experience by ignoring the Warner years: these were without a shadow of a doubt his most inspired, creative, ground-breaking, expressive years as a musician - and the albums of that era benifitted accordingly: he was a truly driven, uniquely focused, one-of-a-kind individual throughout this time - simply without peers as a musical entity.

Thruout the 80's especially, he breathed that incredibly rearified musical atmosphere that only the likes of the Beatles or Hendrix had experienced musically - changing the musical landscape of his generation with effortless ease.

Many will argue, but if you honestly sit down and take the time to listen to what he was doing with his albums back then (and put them into a true moment-in-time context like you would Elvis in the 50's or the Beatles thruout the 60's) then you will see that his 80's albums especially were in a league of their own: he was the only true musician at that time with any worthwhile popularity who truly forged his own musical direction and couldn't give 2 fucks if the general population were prepared to follow. He had a statement to make, a musical journey to take, and if you wanted to ride his uniquely funky, paisley, pumping landscape - cool: if not, fine! Don't!

And that trip was a fucking ride, let me tell you!


Jump to now: as a live musician he has masterful skills beyond any of his pop peers - he effortlessly dumps on their predictable, commercial musically challenged landfill of shite.

But in terms of musically creative, challenging, inspiring albums.... well damn, he seems far too comfortable in his legendary legacy: he no-longer has the drive, the imputis, the desire or (dare i say it) that truly burning heart and soul passion to deliver another masterpiece of an album...

Now its about the money.


But fare not : there is a stunning legacy of 80's albums to experience and explore - to dissect and consume to your hearts content - to truly evaporate deep down into your soul - and understand the genius that once was, and still is.

Only then will you truly understand that freaky mother-fucker known as PRINCE!!

Prince got millions up front for each album under the last WB contract. If's he's recovered all that (probably) then get most likely gets an additional $2.00 per album.

I feel guilty too.
But it stems from things that have nothing to do with this subject.
