I just noticed this about Soft & Wet

The sounds in the funky bridge/breakdown of the song sounds a LOT like the sound effects from Galaga, that arcade game in the 80's, Prince did a great job in recreating that, if not sampling it.

the game came out in the early 80's, possibly late 70's although I wasn't playing it till the early 90's on my nintendo, so I'm not sure which one came first. Maybe someone here who's old enough to remember can confirm?

it is similar. You know the part of the game where one of the critters come down and then randomly stops with some wavy lines coming down, for the fighter to get in front of it quickly, THAT sound there

unclegrandpa is a brilliant username btw cool reminds me of mother grandma from a skit I saw on youtube

My bro and I played one game of Galaga for 3 days straight on the Amiga once. We paused it for breaks of course (we weren't that sad), but our scores went so far off the charts, the computer couldn't keep count anymore biggrin

awww ellie, that was my biggest goal with any nintendo game. I wanted to see what would happen if I got a higher score than the number of digits on the screen. On 190 games in 1 on nintendo when i was playing galaga, I surpassed the maximum score and it kept going higher

Galaga (originally released in 1981) was available for several other game systems before Nintendo, that's for sure! biggrin

My fav back in the day...

Anyhow, what you're really hearing in Prince's early music is him having fun with synthesizers and studio effects. From the late '70s and into the mid-'80s, synths were HUGELY popular and used in most pop songs of that era.

yeah I know the nintendo one was a spin off and came way after the original one. So I guess that video games had similar sound and music elements eh? I used to love all that video game music and hum it all the time, today's video games don't interest me at all

Prince's best kept secret is that he composed many of the video game blips & beeps in the early 80's.
