Batman is maybe one of the best selling (not sure on this one) but not overrated. I think this thread should broken up into categories. For the casual fan, Purple Rain and 1999 are probably seen as the most overrated. Then again, how many casual fans actually listen to these albums in their entireity. I think there are some very underrated songs on PR, 1999, and SOTT, so its hard for me to say that the albums are overrated. I guess if based on the casual fan...yeah these would be those three would be the most overrated but the true prince fan probably has at least 1 of these albums in their top 5. There is no denying the quality of these albums.

1. Parade - I read that even he didn't really rate it
2. Gold Experience - cheesy and a bit bland for me
3. Lovesexy - apart from the end of Glam Slam, Ana Stesia and Dance On don't really dig it.

No way is 1999 overrated. You throw out "Delerious" and that shit is perfect.

I think "Little Red Corvette" *as a track* is a bit overrated.

I don't agree about SOTT being overrated either. Its his most diverse album and it has his best social commentaries.

Purple Rain is a bit hyped up, but you throw out "Take Me With U" and it sounds so much better. The album did get very hyped up coz of the movie.

Parade is short and sweet. Its perfect.

I think his overrated albums are:

1) Gold
2) The Love Symbol (I like this one, but this is not 4.5 stars as AMG would like to say)
3) The Rainbow Children
Kick the old school joint 4 the true funk soldiers.

1. Sign 'o' the Times
2. 1999
3. Dirty Mind
4. Parade
5. Purple Rain

Thank you. I finally found someone who feels the way I do. Most of the time I skip right to Delirious when I hear the intro. (I can't believe you would throw it out). But LRC not as great as everyone says it is.

But "Free" is a top 3 track on 1999, right?

1. Lady Cab Driver
2. DMSR
3. Free

I'm not very healthy currently. "Free" makes me tear eyed at times. No I'm not a girl and yes I'm straight. Its my motivation. There, not afraid to admit it ladies. Lol.

Honestly for me I can only name one. And that for me would be The Gold Experience. I can name at least two other Prince albums from the 90's that are better than this IMO (Love Symbol and Come).

I think 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT, and Lovesexy deserve the praise they get, those are Masterpieces.

You just listed the 3 albums I really like. Okay, maybe the weakest out of these 3 would be Come. But to call Dirty Mind (one of the greatest funk albums and albums period of all time) overrated makes me think you've been sniffing to much Ammonia because its affecting your brain cells. lol

I love that anyone would think Come or Graffiti Bridge were overrated. People thought they were crap when they came out, and only us hardcore nuts like 'em now razz

I'm thinking overrated means "in the general perception" and so I'd have to say
1) Controvery--when people talk about the golden 80s years, this ain't it (beyond a few amazing tracks of course)
2) Diamonds & Pearls--ditto
3) Lovesexy--this is more one of those fan faves that I've never understood. I like it, but don't think it's even as good as Musicology (and there goes my credibility with most people here!0

just dont seem to be a very satifying album .. although it is good an has some of his best songs on . it has more songs than most of his albums that dont seem very significant .

1 - SIGN O THE TIMES .. it is great . but very over-rated because the critics talk of it like its his best an the biggist compliment they can give a new album is 'HIS BEST SINCE SIGN O THE TIMES.. i think he done quite alot of albums better than SIGN O THE TIMES . an musically nearly all of em are better than a bulk of disc one backing tracks

2 - EMANCIPATION .. i do like it .. but definetley was over-rated by many including prince himself

3 - THE HITS/THE B-SIDES .. what the hell is there so many tracks from PRINCE an DIRTY MIND on there for? .. they sound like basic demo's next to the rest .. basically just crazy choices . an major songs HITS . like PAISLEY PARK . GIRLS AN BOYS ..MY NAME IS PRINCE ..THE FUTURE ..PARTYMAN..ect ect werent there but they managed to put WHY YOU WANNA TREAT ME SO BAD .on
whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

3121 - MuSUCKology pt.2? No thanks, pt.1 was bad enough. ill
SOTT - It's good, but really not the 'crowning achievement' it is usually held up as.
TGE - Starting to show it's age.

Overated surely means something that is loved by the majority but does not warrant that stature!!!

Since when were any of these 3 really truly loved by the majority above his other albums????

For me it needs to be a bonefide classic that you just don't get. In this category I would include dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, SOTT and The Black Album and I would not call any of them overated!!
No child is bad from the beginning. They only imitate their atmosphere.

I can only come up with two at the moment:

1. Sign 'o' the Times (and before y'all flame the shit outta me--I never said it was a BAD album, I think it's terribly OVERRATED.)
2. Planet Earth
3. ???

*disclaimer--overrated among fans (fans=people who post on the Org or HQ)

Agreed. I adore SOTT, but I think it's hilarious how folks are all on Prince's dick about it. I think you had to be there at that point in the 80's to fully appreciate the album, as in the context of the shit other artist were releasing, SOTT was a gem in landscape of turds. But a flawless masterpiece? nah.

Also the whole Planet Earth thing, I don't get either. I like it better than his previous albums of late, but it's basically in the same vain as Musicology or 3121, just more melodic. It's another one of his "Prince on cruise control" albums.

My third candidate would be Dirty Mind. And before I get flamed, I'll add that I do think it's quite funky, and I like half the songs on it. But I think it's extremely overrated.
