It was released as a limited edition I believe late 92 or sometime in 93? I remember seeing it on base at Ramstein when I was in Germany.

Lawd, it needs remastering something fierce.

It depends on weather you're looking for the WB released disc, or one of the rare original presses. I found my copy of the WB release a few years ago at a used CD store. I lucked out, and the store didn't know what they had - so it only cost me about $7.00. E Bay usually has a copy or two for sale. But be prepared to pay a bit more for it as the seller usually knows that it's out of print. The original pressings are very rare, and usually cost an arm and a leg.

Was the original bootleg version of the Black Album different than the Black Album that was officially released?

I seem to remember reading that there was a difference in the track listing. But I couldn't tell you what it was. One of the more seasoned orgers my have to chime in on that subject.

The famous "bootleg" version actually got to me in the form of a tape recording. The track listing of THAT was identical to the version that was released by Warners a few years later.

It's a funky little album but I have to disagree with folks who think it suffers from the timing of it's official release. I think it would have never made a big hit cause it's just not commercial.

Thanx! I must have been thinking of something else that I had read.

Well as we R talkin'about the Black Album...

...I've sometimes read and heard that this album was meant 2 close Sign'of the Time. But producers and warner did not want 2 release a 3 discs set...

Is that true ?

...great album, dark and strange. Too bad the official 94 release kept the 87 sound ! And by the way, is it true that prince and the npg were in rehearsal for re-recording the black album in '94 ?

I remember the story being that Prince made it during a depression (or at least not feeling that great) but then dicided it was too dark and made LoveSexy which was much lighter...

Unconditionally I love everything that Prince does, but in my honest opinion...this particular album was like an artists ground wire...A place to put aggression that helped to propel him farther than frustration. I believe it was necessary for Prince to clear himself.

You're getting your stories mixed up. Sign O' The Times was originally a 3LP set called Crystal Ball that was born out of expanding the Camille album (also cancelled) with tracks from the aborted Dream Factory double LP (again cancelled). Warners said no to 3 LPs, but yes to 2, so Prince cut the set down, and in removing the title track, the album was renamed Sign O' The Times (Crystal Ball '87 has nothing to do with the Crystal Ball that was released in 1998, other than they share the same title track and the song 'Good Love'). Hope that makes sense! razz

The Black Album was scheduled to be released in December 1987, but was pulled at the request of Prince a week before it's release date.

I would say that was so. The material on the album was all culled from different left-over ideas and projects, so it would be wrong to assume that the tracks themselves were recorded in this frame of mind - but the project itself was definately borne out of self-doubt and a desire to answer critics and 'prove' something (to others, to himself or both).

In my mind, the Black Album is the result of the Revolution break-up. If you follow that through.
