That ain't cool! None of my text showed up! I think I wrote:
Prince has mentioned gambling in a lot of his songs. I can think of "Shoo-Bed-Ooh", "My Name is Prince (Tony M's rap part)", "2 the 9's" and "Money Don't Matter". Are there any others? He seems to know a lot of the intricities and rules of gambling, especially Blackjack and Poker, at least based on his lyrics. So, is he a gambler? I can't imagine him sitting at the tables in Vegas or AC due to the fact that he'd get mobbed. So, is he playing illegal games? Online? He's gotta be playing somewhere!

Oh, yeah that's right! I bet there are others I just can't think of right now. Can we make a list? I might have to make a mix CD now of all of Prince's gambling songs!

He may know card games, but his chess lyrics are a little weird! Like in emale, "king takes a pawn"? When does a king ever take a pawn?? That pawn musta got pretty far up the other end of the board. Maybe that's his point, but I think he stuck it in cause he thought it sounded cool. There are a few other chess refs that I can't think of right now, but I think he uses them when he needs something to rhyme. Take it - like Clarence said:
"I got a million of them - all different U know."

Hahaha, that is a good point! A pawn should never get that close to a King!
And I don't know jack shit about football, but in that song Acknowledge Me does he make literal sense when he says something about "4th and gold and I ain't about to punt?"

It isn't "fourth and gold" -- it's "fourth and goal." And, yes -- it makes sense. It means he's too close to scoring not to go for it. Roadies and card-playing on tours are for sure. Even if he doesn't play, he'd watch. Roadies have to wait for trucks and stuff to be done before they can work. Cards are always bein' pulled (and tour salaries being lost). I'm sure Hucky can clue us in a little more on this one over time at his (excellent) Prince Stories web site

He also grew up in the midwest, which makes it even more likely he plays cards -- or, at least, knows how. Folks start playing as kids here. Gives you something to do during the long, cold winters.

Oh -- songs that mention cards...
In Another Lonely Christmas, he talks about "playing pokeno for money." Pokeno is a card game that's a cross between poker and keno. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't know chess at all, not in the slightest...but I thought I heard that in some instances in chess, a pawn can be turned into a queen. So maybe it means the original queen is gone and replaced by a pawn that is now queen? Yeah, I'm stretching here for a song that is really just a b-side with delusions of grandeur...
