#1 - Marvin
#2 - Prince & MJ Seriously, there's no competition. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Are you seriously comparing 'Planet Earth' to MJ and MG? Earth song and Mercy Mercy Me are so far infront of Planet Earth its not even worth talking about.

MJ wins this one for me. Earth Song is an incredibly strong power ballad (one of MJ's fortes, ballads). Planet Earth is nice, but nothing above "good". I dont even know what that last one is =P

Look. From the first listen, I actually thought that the Planet Earth was an attempt to do the "Earth Song". Now, I think Prince is miles ahead and much better artist than MJ, but I also think that the Earth Song really conveys the meaning and the emotion better than anything Ive heard. Of course people dont take it seriously because its MJ, but take the song alone and it is outstanding. Prince obviously liked The Earth song as PE is clearly influenced by it. If Marvin Gaye had sung The Earth song, it would be talked about as one of the best songs in History, but because its MJ... its been slightly forgotton.

I can't exactly see Marvin doing a song like Earth Song or Heal The World for that matter. When Michael sing those types of songs they are very Disneyfied, because Michael whole aim is always to appeal to everyone, so his songs are always delivered in an over-sentimental way that they sound sugary sweet. If you listen to a songs like Mercy Mercy Me or Save The Children from Marvin, however, they are delivered in a completely different way to Michael songs, you get the message conveyed without all the sap and sugary sentimentality that comes along with MJ humantarian/ecology songs.

I agree, esp. about Heal the World, its a real sugar coat of a song, but cant agree about Earth Song. That song seems to have some real pain and anger in it, the music is inspirational as well. Like you, I couldnt see Marvin singing Earth song, I just said that someone with Marvins reputation singing Earth Song, the song would have got a lot more respect, because MJ did it, it is mainly forgotton...

1. Marvin 2. MJ 3. Prince [Edited 8/29/07 5:12am] For me its 1. Mercy Mercy Me I mean that song is completey perfect in every way and on every level. 2. Planet Earth I don't know why it some people on the org love to hate Prince's newest music whenever it comes out, but in about 5 years they will all be frontin and lying telling people they realized how great this album and this song really is. I am blown away by this song and have been since the first moment I heard it. 3. Earth Song. Never really moved me. I appreciated the sentiment but Micheal has really gotten into over producing his music lately. To me this song is too musically heavy but hey its his music he can do whatever he likes with it. THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

the video for earth song is one of the best videos ever made, period. the part with that dead elephant with its tusks removed is heartbreaking..and then when you see it brought back to life at the end--fuck it i damned near shed a tear. the interplay between mj's vocals and the gospel background is awesome.
of course, the video of planet earth would somehow be filmed on the stage of paisley park with prince sitting on a stool with a guitar, i'm just guessing.

The music video is beautiful and touching. VERY EFFECTIVE. Do you remember the part where the hunter is killing the seal? As for ranking the three songs: Earth Song and Mercy Mercy Me are superior to Planet Earth. I think in other areas, Prince is superior to Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye, but not with Planet Earth.

Who says Earth Song has been forgotten??
Its his biggest selling , most successful single in Europe It remained at No ! in the Uk for seven weeks, the video is a masterpiece. I dont think its overproduced, its just a killer power ballad full of anger and emotion. Nothing on History is overproduced in my opinion, i think the balance is just about right. Planet Earth is a great song, but not mindblowing, it just doesnt have much oomph to it and is quite monotone in places Mercy Mercy me is great too , but i dont think that its a song which the whole world can appreciate. Heal the World is sappy, but it has a stunning melody, its the kind of melody you'd expect God to sing if he opened up the heavens.
