Last December is among one of my favorite songs. But, the voices scare the living bleepers out of my nieces. [Edited 8/17/07 16:29pm]

I'll have to disagree and most of us have had this dispute before. Sure it's his most original and innovative-sounding since probably Lovesexy or hell his whole 80's output, but lyrically it is kinda strong, but very lacking most of the time too. Most of us (including me) just don't understand the JW lingo. It is one of my favorite Prince records, but I wouldn't consider it his best. Check me out and add me on:

even if he talks abot jw on this amazing album
prince didn't put it in your face, he rather tells metaphorical, quasi biblical story in which he sounds very convincing/

i think it's the most inspired work he's done this decade. this isn't to say i think it's one of his best albums - or even one of my favorite albums - in his WHOLE career, but it's probably my favorite of this decade thus far, and in my second tier of favorites overall.

This album is more divisive than any other, I feel. There are a lot of people who absolutely adore it, and a lot who absolutely abhor it! I'm stuck in the middle. There are a few songs I absolutely love ("Last December", "The Everlasting Now"), and some that I really hate ("Mellow" is my least favorite Prince song ever). While I respect this album a lot, it comes off sounding like a giant claustrophobic headache to me, and as such is among his least listenable albums as a whole. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

You don't like Mellow? It has that nu-soul, jazzy flavor in it. That's my favorite song on the album, but I don't really know where this song or She Loves Me 4 Me fit on this mostly bibical, JW concept album. [Edited 8/17/07 18:52pm] Check me out and add me on:

I don't like neo-soul, with a few exceptions. This ain't one of 'em! 2. I really cringe when Prince is making obvious attempts to be "cool", name-dropping hot artists like Macy and Common, especially at his age. 3. As you say, this song is completely out of place on an album like The Rainbow Children. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! In his autobiography, the Dark Lord is quoted as proudly saying: "Like Padmé Amidala & the Planet Alderaan, I fucked The Rainbow Children BIG TIME!!!" . [Edited 8/17/07 23:00pm]

I dont think any one Prince album can be considered his best ever.
He has some great albums.....TRC is one of them, as is Purple Rain SignOTimes & Parade. Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

when it was released, I loved the album title and the artwork on the cover and wanted to buy it, but I sampled it on amazon and on different occasions at hmv, and I just wasn't feeling it. I wanted to like it cause I appreciate instrumental music and people doing music outside the box, but I just couldn't.

i really agree with that. i wish i knew what fired him up in such a way. but it feels like whenever he has an agenda with an album (or it appears that he has one), the results are really cool, like TRC or even Planet Earth. albums like Musicology and 3121 seem to be just songs he wrote for the "next album".

No, it is his worst.

I am really glad you like the album I personally think it is a really good one perhaps a great one, but personally I cant see it as being the best and most creative. Musically it has a good sound and some great tunes, I find it to be a lttlebit overly religiouse thematically in a too specific way, Im not really into the narration and over dramatical theme approach of it its like a musical or a play or something. I wouldnt see it as being more creative or original than say... Parade, LoveSexy, Around the World in a Day. It possibly benefits from better production than some those albums caus of when it was made I really feel those albums I mentioned should be remixed especially Parade but not ina way to change or take away there basic sound/vibe just to fill them out a bit more, Parade could do with a bigger sound.

Musically it is awesome, his best work in ages (wedding feast aside...).
Lyrically it is questionable, no doubt.

Yea, Im a oldsclool Prince fan and i hate the dumb thing with a passion, and its not the lyrics those are stupid no doubt, but the production, the laziness in compossition, like ive heard it all before but much much better like 15 years ago. Sure the musicianship is top rate, i will never take that away. What i wanna know is .....Do any oldschool prince fansreally dig it, or is it just the newbees that discovered him on Dimonds and Pearls or Emancipation?( which i kinda hate also exept for Gett Off.)

Force of habit.... I try to disagree I think I'll have go with on this one. Other great albums, and there has been a few come close but this album is solid quality, start to finish!! small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

PROBLEM WITH MOST PRINCE ALBUMS IS FLOW.SONGS DON'T SEGUE ONE INTO ANOTHER WELL MAYBE BECAUSE OF MUSIC DIVERSITY,BUT ITS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS ONE.
RAINBOW CHILDREN IS THE BEST PIACE OF MUSIC EVER PRODUCED BY PRINCE

Better than SOTT? I don't think so.
But I agree it could run for the second place with the other top albums of the 80's (1999, purple rain, parade,...) Better than the recent trilogy: absolutely yes! (note: I'm talking mainly about music, not lyrics, not being english-mothertongue, and of course, musically speaking, I'd like it better without the so called "Vader" vocal inserts)
