I can understand loving The Rainbow Children, but unilaterally declaring it the best Prince album is a bit much. wink

The sound of the rainbow children is just perfect, the most well crafted Prince album, I love concept albums.. Reminded me of Lovesexy in a weird way! Remember sitting down and listening to it first time with candles and a cheeky spliff and it blew my mind! Musically very clever too..

U know I was just thinking I hated this album at the time... I just decided I would answer this and thought I'd better shove the CD in and give it a perusual before I did. Have to say don't see what my problem was with it, seems good for the most part lol So looks like I won't be commenting!

Think I didn't want to give it a chance cos of the stupid voice that starts it off , cos I hate talking bits in songs.

doh! edit

JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

You people are fucking NUTS.

TRC is probably Prince's biggest scam. The music is so boring and uninspired - yet some people love it. I think it's because of the whole "artiness" that was associated with the album. So people think that by liking it they're "true" Prince fans that "get" the album. In reality its just as bad as the crap he was putting out at the time, except more JW lyrics.

I would wager that it's one of his least played albums by any fan, even those who love love love it.

oh...I guess I don't like it anymore in that case
wink

It's actually the only album of the 00's that's had any lasting power for me. The others were nice for a while but didn't really grab me. It's not the lyrics or the weirdness (which I do actually like) but it's how high he takes the music. Musicology, 3121, & PE only hint at those peaks.

I've listened to the album hundreds of times, and because I forced myself. I really like Sally Fields, I mean TRC. NEWS, on the other hand, has gotten about five spins on my cd player.

Darth Vader voice -10
I hate that pretentious, annoying voice - it ruined the whole album.
I've listened to the whole album maybe 3 or 4 times and as much as I'd like to like it, the Darth Vader bollocks ruined it for me everytime.
And in all honesty i think they're some awesome music on there (the early part of Digital Garden is one of more all time favorite pieces of music -pure bliss). But that fuck-aweful Daft Vader voice destroys the whole experience completely and makes me toss it aside in frustration.

I think it would be a top album without that pretentious voice bullshit, but alas it gathers cyber-dust and is reduced to the 'hardly ever played (and never completed) stack' along with New Power Soul (at least The One, Come On and Wasted Kisses don't have Daft Pretentious talking shit thru them...)

I so agree. The preaching voice that links the tracks spoils what could be an enjoyable album. There are a few tracks worth noting but along with New Power Soul is easily what gets played the least!

Although if we're including the News then not only does that never get played,,, I don't think I've ever managed it begining to end even once!! What was that about? One day I'm sure, but its not gonna be today, and I don't think tomorrow either!

I liked NEWS okay, but I have to admit it didn't really grab me.

My point is just that I'm not going to force myself to listen to a Prince album just because he's fooled me into thinking it's important, as someone had implied. I actually liked the album, that's why I listened to it.

I think the voice is goofy, but goofy is just how I want my Prince music!

And the voice is part of the music. I sing along with it in my deepest voice "the wise one who understood the law as it was handed down..."

The Rainbow Children is an incredible ballad. I believe Prince put the songs in perfect order to tell the story. For any Rock and roller that still thinks of Prince as, what "airplay" he's gotten from the radio stations...would be welcomed into a better understanding of his clever diversity.
