I thought it was 1991 too. "I Wonder" was probably updated to the version it is now from a 1983 recording. The same thing with "Wonderful Ass". It was originally from 1983 untill Prince updated and made some changes in 1986, the version it is now. That what probably went down with "I Wonder"

One of my all time favorites. I've heard both dates 1983 and 1991.
In Per Nilsen's 1993 book Prince: A Documentary its credited as originally a 1983 track written during the period when most of the Purple Rain album was recorded:
Summer-autumn 1983: ...three other songs from this period were 'I Wonder', 'G-Spot' and 'Electric Intercourse," which actually was in an early edit of the film with Prince and Wendy trading guitar licks and prince singing "Electric in my body, I'll shock you with my lips. Electric intercourse, don't you wanna make love." G-Spot was later rerecorded for the Jill Jones album, while 'I Wonder was updated with new vocals in 1991.

I don't know if any more info was available in the Vault book as I don't have it (bring on the update!). Would really loved to have seen Electric Intercourse in the Purple Rain movie as this is another favorite Prince song.
