The sales figures always come in funky and there is always a surge for one artist or another towards the end. For what it's worth I think the man will still beat Hannah. TOMORROW'S TOP 10 TODAY: UTV/UMe's Now 25 will top tomorrow's HITS Album Sales chart, with a total that looks to be in the 150-155k range, followed, in turn by New Line's resilient Hairspray soundtrack (101k), Disney's Hannah Montana 2 (90.1k), Columbia's debuting Prince (86.8k), Grand Hustle/Atlantic's T.I. (66.5k), Interscope/A&M's Fergie (53.6k), Island/IDJ Top10 newcomer Sum 41 (46k), WB's Linkin Park (42k), Universal Republic's Amy Winehouse (42k) and Hollywood's Plain White T's, making their Top 10 bow with 40k. (7/30p) really dissapointing... Not the # 3 position, but the sales number... Only hardcore fans bought it apparently...

Why would anyone be concerned about who bought Planet Earth (fans or the general public)?
Who cares??? Planet Earth is prince's work, not any of ours and if he chooses to not promote properly or in our eyes with some kind of strategy then he's doomed! LMAO! Prince is having a wonderful time in london gearing up for 21 nights and trust me he ain't even worried about the charts or how many copies he sold in the world today! He's having a blast playing guitar with the band and he's gonna show london how its done on a stage with what he loves the most: MUSIC and Performing IT! If Planet Earth was only bought by die-hards, trust me, that leaves more cds available to the masses once he does decides (if ever) to release a proper single and video to mtv, vh1 and bet. Its a gradual process, artist are so use to hyping a project prior to an album being released and then they've exhausted all avenues to promote, because they appeared on every show and magazine cover. Prince's album is making a good debut...sitting right under a great compilation of today's biggest hit singles on radio, plus the biggest movie soundtrack...meaning there's such a big deal about the movie and all the hype and you can't forget about mostly every kids favorite Hannah Montana! Then there's Prince...so if any of those fans who want to know if their favorite kid character or movie or NOW, is doing well on the charts, they'll look at see "PRINCE: PLANET EARTH" right there with the hottest releases and not to mention they'll say..hmmm maybe I should go get the new prince cd too, he was awesome on superbowl and I loved the commercial he did for verizon. The charts are marketing in itself too. Plus Prince will be away for 3 weeks and that'll give the album time to settle and who knows what the hell he's got cooking for us once he returns to the states! He may just come back ready to tour here and not to mention get on a few tv shows and play some music for the masses to hear. The debut of an album is always a lasting impression. Artist try so hard to maintain a high position, but what we know all to be so true is that there's 200 slots there and Planet Earth will go up and down those slots for some time if Prince chooses to promote after london. If not...he's not gonna lose any sleep and neither am I. Because I got my copy and I also play it around ppl who don't know prince's music...so if they like what they hear, then they'll ask and buy or not ask and I'll keep lovin what I love. BOTTOM LINE is PLANET EARTH will ROCK THE TOP 5 this week and thats DAMN GOOD for no stretegy promotional campaign. Plus its also good he's being low profile on this release right now, because too much will be over kill and I believe since 2004, the world has seen Prince a bit much. Much more than usual. So let them catch up...DAMN!

he gave it away free in the uk, which means it was all over the internet for people to download, i dont think he was looking to top the charts with it so no.3 is damn good for something that everyone had easy access to for free! "Im Too Funky To Sleep With Myself"

91,676 copies sold of an album that has already been made available for illegal download following the earlier giveaway in the UK
91,676 copies sold of an album with very little by way of promotion 91,676 copies sold of an album when albums are selling fewer and fewer copies each year due to downloads etc 91,676 copied sold of an album NOT available on iTunes I'd say that was a very decent result for Mr Nelson! 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Keep in mind, almost every album that is released by a major artist gets leaked before the release date and becomes available online for free. Your other points also apply more or less to other artists like Bob Dylan for example whose last album Modern Times has sold more than 2.5 million and debuted at no. 1. I know for a fact that album was available online illegally way before it came out. The only promotion it had was word of mouth and great reviews - no widely circulated videos or anything else. It's just a great album. The main reason PE didn't sell well (let's face it - 91,000 is pretty weak) is because it didn't create any buzz and this is due to the fact that it's just a weak album - the music itself is very weak. Prince fans want to rationalize and blame all sorts of factors for its weak sales but they forget that its mainly about the music. Nirvana's Nevermind sold massively on the strength of great songs, not marketing.

but it's not a weak album.trc wasnt a weak lp and it sold like 100,000 all together.why is it that on a prince fan-site the everyone dogs everything he does.no one is selling lps right now.and he sold with no promotion or nothing basically.but seeing as how he debuted at #3 on the pop charts is he number 1 on the r&b charts.oh..and it's still the number one debut of the week.but no one points that out.

Why are you so interested in P's music sales. Since he gave 3 million away and is not doing any promotion for it. I doubt he cares.

Dude lot's of weak records are selling. Hannah Montana is selling CD and she sucks. He gave 3 million copies away. P is using this record as a loss leader. He is using it to drive people to the concerts. Nothing is wrong with PE if you like old school 80's prince. Lot's of other artist do nothing but rip him off right now so all he did was bring back his old sound. If it is not for you maybe you need to get off the Purple boat. ----- internationallover2004 said: jaypotton said: 91,676 copies sold of an album that has already been made available for illegal download following the earlier giveaway in the UK

PE's selling power has nothing to do with the writing cuz you purple freaks will buy anything he puts out The album is not his best but not his worst by far. Be happy the man is still making music. ya greedy fucks

Why should I lower my standards for good songwriting just because its Prince? In my books he doesn't get a free pass just because of his past accomplishments.

That's great for Prince at this stage in his career.
But, 91,000 for a #3 album. I know summer is a slow time for albums, but it looks like the industry moguls were right. No one (meaning much less than before) buys albums anymore, even if they like them. Plus, a lot of sales are of heavily discounted first-week albums. Sometimes I'll go into a record store (or book store) and they'll be selling an album at full price 16.99 or 17.99 and it just seems ridiculous.

I'd say it's a pretty good result! Planet Earth can't really be compared to Musicology or 3121 in this respect, because Planet Earth:
I think we've been a bit spoiled by the high debuts of the previous 2. Anybody remember the late 90s and early 00s? The Rainbow Children debuted at number 108, for goodness sake! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
