HAhaHAhaHAhaHA... This is hilarious, since most of 'Planet Earth' isn't R&B or Hip-Hop. Yeah, but like with the single "Uptown" for example that peaked at R&B #5, or the fact that "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad," was all over R&B radio, it just goes to show--the demographic for this chart will buy good music (or what they think is good music for those who don't like PE) no matter what musical genre it is! And that makes me very happy. [Edited 8/3/07 12:55pm]

"Future Baby Mama" has been getting a lot of play on N.Y. R&B stations before he dropped the album. I am not surprise to see this.

Good to hear. Most likely because of these 4 jams on the cd...just my opinion:

R&B/Hip Hop charts mean Black Charts. In fact untill recently that's what they where called but they changed it, i dont know i guess they where trying to be more politcaily correct? Which in turn they just put every black artist in the catergorey or R&B and Hip Hop. *cough* Rascim *cough*

It hasn't been called the Black Charts since the late 1980s (and yes they probably changed it because they were trying to be more politically correct, we all know how segregated the music industry was in the 1980s). It was just the R&B charts until they updated it to include hip hop. But I also don't really see the point of what you're trying to say. Is it a bad thing that Prince's album topped the so-called "black" charts. A lot of people in this thread (not just you) seem to hating on this fact. Just because it's not #1 on the pop charts does not mean it's not important. It's not a secret that R&B/Hip Hop is a psuedonym for "black music" in the industry. Just because an artist is black doesn't mean their album automatically shoots straight to the top of the R&B/Hip Hop Chart. You still have to put out a good album (or in some cases an album that a lot of people like that might not be so great). [Edited 8/5/07 9:12am] [Edited 8/5/07 9:54am]

My cousin who is just as impassioned with prince's music only like ONE track ... so i'll contend myself with saying this is just a bump in the road...NEXT! man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I don't think that Prince was lumped in. Just because Prince only has "four out of 10" R&B songs on Planet Earth does not mean that Prince and the people at Columbia did not somewhat (and I cannot say to what degree) target this album at an R&B audience. Since Prince first hit the music scene nearly 30 years ago, a large part of his audience has been that people on the soul, black, R&B, R&B/Hip Hop chart. Even when was trying his hardest to crossover, his music always had a strong hold on that chart. We all know that R&B in the past (maybe not so much now) is such a mix of different kinds of music, it's was never just one thing. Funk, Soul and R&B all have so many different elements that make them whole. Like the Planet Earth album. I think that Planet Earth can even be described as a genre-defying album. It's hard to just describe it one way. So,it makes sense that it would top both the R&B and pop charts. [Edited 8/5/07 12:33pm]

That's pretty good for his age.
The only time I ever at debut at #1 at anything was when I first got my cherry popped. Since then, I always start out strong, but then quickly plummet.
