BlackguitaristZ's Spotlight on Nikki and the Corvettes

I ran this here in this forum because of the name of the band (obvious) and a group that I am certain Prince was aware of and liked. I thought it would be interesting to share this with u all being that maybe many of u that visit this site wasn't aware of this band. Nikki and the Corvettes released their self titled album in 1980 that was basically like The Ramones with girl vocals. Something The Donnas would go on and replicate. But Nikki and the Corvettes were influenced by Iggy and the Stooges, New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders. All of who Prince were fans of and were influenced by. That's why there is no doubt that I believe Prince dug this group, from a musical standpoint. Obviously, at the very least, he dug the name of the band. P's knowledge of bands and different types of music is uncanny and it's no secret that during the late 70's and early 80's, P was looking well outside of r&b and funk to pattern himself after and get ideas from to bring into his thing. This is an album well worth checking out. I think that it's good for Prince fans to understand what came before prince and what and who he was into that shaped some of his ideas and music. Like Adam Ant. He influenced P's image deeply during his 1999 album period. Not just P's image but also his 1999 era videos. Another cat definately worth checking out if you're not already hip to him.

Thanx. I started to run this thread well over a year ago. Longer than that actually. But I didn't cuz I didn't think anybody would give a shit. Many on here still won't. But I came across my copy of this album last week and I thought "Oh..what the hell" It's no accident that both Little Red Corvette and Darling Nikki both came after but very shortly after 1980. And both songs were just one album apart from each other.

P has such an encyclopedic musical vocabulary. I always thought it would be interesting for him to teach a college course or write a book on his musical influences (Yeah, Right!). Music journalists never touch on the beyond obvious (Sly, James, Carlos, Jimi). Does anyone know of a serious musical interview where he is allowed to comment on musical history/influences vs. such lazy topics (name change, "slave", money, JW, etc.)? It's challenging to pull the 1% of new knowledge out of these "interviews."

BlackguitaristZ - Did you ever think about filling this vacuum by writing an interesting serious journalistic piece or a book that purely examines P from a musical point of view?

Wow,..that's a nice compliment. To be honest, no, I hadn't thought about writting a book or a piece dealing with Prince. Untill reading your post, it has never crossed my mind. I easily could though.

Truthfully I don't see why you posted this in the Prince forum. Just because Nikki & Corvette are each used in two different Prince songs? Don't you think thats kind of a stretch? I mean you don't know for sure if Prince ever even heard of this group - you just "believe" Prince dug this group.

I don't think it's a stretch at all. If I did, I wouldn't have wrote the thread in the first place. I never claimed that I KNOW P has heard this album. Key word; "believe". Again, I believe he dug the album because of the way the music sounded and the various influences involved in the songs on the album. Same influences who influenced Prince himself. As I mentioned in the thread. Especially early in his career. If this album was a country and western album, I never would have done this thread. You don't have to see where I'm coming from with this. That's as cool as snow as far as I'm concerned. Please believe that. But uh, by u posting TWICE on a thread that u can't relate to,...wow,..is it THAT serious?

I didn't say I can't relate to what your are saying - my problem is your phrasing is such that now some people regard you as a reliable source. Some org idiot is going to read what you say & turn around & say I read where Prince got the songs for Darling Nicki & Little Red Corvette because he listened to Nikki & the Corvettes.

I don't see any sign that says I have to check my attitude at the door.
As long as you keep stating your beliefs as facts I'll be here to call you on it.
I am the Doorkeeper.

Whatever, player. Obviously you've been bent out of shape. Probably because others who have posted on this thread has complimented me on doing the thread. But indeed, that's your cross to bare. But uh...dig,..You have NOTHING to call me on cuz I never once stated in my thread as anything as FACT. My beliefs are just that; my beliefs. As I made clear as hell in my thread. So your comment has nil validity. Some friendly advice though; PLEASE get your shit straight before ATTEMPTING to call someone out. It makes u look bad. And why concern yourself with what others may think? From what you've shown, u NEED to be waaaay more concern in how YOU come off.

This guy looks at you as a reliable source of insider information.
A reliable source. A fact bringer. A truth teller.
Do you think he understands what you are writing are your thoughts on Prince?
Because to me it looks like he is taking them as cold hard facts.
I don't know if you purposely wrote it that way or as the writer you just don't see how its misleading because you wrote it & it seems perfectly clear to you.
Its not just you - this is one of the problems with internet world.
Thats why I'm here.

P.S. Its my belief you need to learn how to take criticism better.
But thats just my opinion. biggrin

falloff I really love how u went and got the other guy's post to prove ur point. Like " look here is one who is clearly deceived by u"... lol
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

Doorkeeper, you are making a mountain out of a molehill and getting all hostile for no reason.

Probably my favorite thing about the org is that even though I am very knowledgable about Prince's work, there are quite a few people on here who know way more than I do and I come on here and learn new things all the time that I would probably not learn anywhere else.

Blackguitaristz is NOT stating a fact, he's pointing out a band (Nikki & The Corvettes) that I'm sure 99% of the people here (myself included) have never heard of and making a POSSIBLE connection between the name of the band and the names of 2 Prince songs. Maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong, only Prince knows for sure, but he stated from the beginning that he believes it might have influenced the naming of those songs, he never stated it as a fact.

I was born in 75 so I was around 6 or 7 during that era but if BG was a little older and was already hip to what was going on in the music scene, then he is aware of some stuff that I'm not aware from that era. At the very least it is an interesting thought that he brought up, regardless of whether it actually influenced the naming of the songs or not. BG actually posts a lot of cool threads that I enjoy reading, much cooler than the hundreds of silly threads posted everyday that are superficial and do not stimulate any thoughtful discussions. So I wrote all this because I don't understand why you are attacking the guy. If you disagree with what he posted, that's cool. But you are attacking him when really his posts add a lot to prince.org and many people enjoy reading them. Can't we all just get along? cool

And again, thanx for the compliments regarding my past posts, in general. On the other hand, don't waste your time speaking about something to someone who obviously has issues.
