All I've heard in ages of new D'Angelo music is a demo of a track called 'Really Love' that I think Questlove gave to an Australian radio station. Correct me if I'm wrong and you know otherwise. The track was meandering and didn't sound fully fleshed out. D's vocals are 'mumbly', to put it mildly. lol

That's my main problem with Voodoo - those infuriating mumbling vocals. Enunciate, fool! He had no problem singing on "Brown Sugar". Plus all of the vocal layering gets tiresome. I enjoy "Brown Sugar" infinitely more than Voodoo.

I've never heard "Voodoo". I've heard "ABOUT" it. I heard it was pretty damn good. However, for someone who has not listened to anything from "Voodoo", but "Untitled (How Does it Feel)", which when it came out, I thought that it was off-showy. .[/quote]

Wasn't Untitled (How Does it Feel) dedicated to Prince in the liner notes?

D'angelo's career is sad, he has talent but not sure if he will comeback to make a good album again. Kinda went the route of Devante Swing, another talent wasted..

Ah, the boy comes, say something stupid trying to shock (like d is funkier than p, or i am better guitar player than p), say a few stupid things pretending he knows anything about real music, than gives a step back from what he said saying he was just pissed. How pathetic. cool

The track was a demo and not a full fledged song. It was actually Questlove's way of letting folks know that he was actually working on music. Unfortunately, it spread all over the net like wildfire and was broadcast as a "new song" There were actually were no words and D'Angelo did "mumble" the entire track. It's a technique he borrowed from Marvin Gaye... mumbling in harmonies and going back and putting actual lyrics in its place. I hate seeing D'Angelo discussed on these boards because it usually turns into a purple-nut-hugging affair and folks wind up making mountains out of molehills. D'Angelo does his thing (slower than molasses ... seemingly) . Prince does his. It if ever surfaces on LP, I think the track 1000 Deaths will shut a lot of people up about D's skills as a musician.

Oh, I don't doubt D'Angelo's skills as a musician. I really enjoyed his first album, but think that outside of a handful of songs, Voodoo sounds like one track repeated endlessly. He has a great gift, but he's done an excellent job of squandering that gift so far.

I do disagree with you about Voodoo. I think it's one of the most important soul records since 2000. However, I do agree that he's jacking up his gift. I try not to let an artist's personal demons affect the way I feel about him/her as an artist (i.e. D'Angelo, Amy Winehouse, etc) But even if he never drops another album again I still think he's made a great impact on soul music with 2 albums.

Yeah right, D has had a great career with tunes that people sing on the street. He has had such an impact on music world and all. A real musical revolution.
Voodoo is one of the best albums of all time.

Everything above is true if you know shit about Sly, Marvin, Stevie, Clinton, James Brown and P.

I swear some of you talk about funk and really don't know what it is.

Apart from Chicken Grease (which is my joint!) there really isn't anything remotely funky on Voodoo.

nah, maybe marvin gaye, and the other R&B crooners. But Prince not so much...
D'Angelo is funkier than Prince. And i think Prince knows that...

R U outta your damn mind?

This isn't even arguable.

Mike Archer(D'Angelo) was a complete Prince head. Dude had posters on the wall.

He used 2 study every live video tape he had, with his finger over the pause button.

The man's funky, but uh-uh... not funkier than P, and D knows it.

Mind you, I stress, "POSSIBLE", as the key word only because I hadn't heard "Voodoo". Hell, "The Black Album" is the one album of "Prince's" where I can't note a synthesizer, but maybe that's just me.

Listen to Voodoo, and you're right out of Prince's Catalogue The Black Album, would probably be the best canidate (funk wise).
But Voodoo, Knocks the dust off of The Black Album, funk wise, Artistically lyrically and musically is different story. But just plain ole funk wise?
Voodoo is superior

'Voodoo' doesn't even touch 'Brown Sugar', which was a much better album.

Does anyone know if d'angelo has any gigs lined up, last time i seen him was brixton academy in london, the guy was on fire (not literally) and had the crowd screaming for more, anyone who thinks the voodoo album is crap, are souless, and cant be true musicians at heart.

please dont compare these 2 artists its impossible, prince and d'angelo are both fab musicians in their own right.and i know they both have the ultimate respect for each others work wink

Bullshit. Voodoo is an everlasting cd. It gets so fucking boring after a few listens. Tune after tune, same tricks, same sort of arrangements.
There are thousands of funk cds better than Voodoo out there.
he is trying to be Sly on Voodoo but just fail. face down.
Black Album is original, creative, full of ideas btw.
