Predictions on where "Planet Earth" will chart - Post here

For us chartists it's always fun to follow Prince CDs.

I would think with fairly weak competition and an awful lot of attention on it, "Planet Earth" could easily debut at #1 on Billboard 200; BTW, I have no idea how sales are as of the first day.

"3121" debuted at #1. And just like that CD, "P.E." will probably fall fast after that.

Y'all?

Where do you think it will debut?

It should debut at #1 and will sell more than 3121 overall!

It doesn't matter much, compared to USA sales... but here in Italy PE should debut within top 5 or even top 3, and this would b P best result in the italian charts since Lovesexy (or Batman, i should check somewhere). biggrin

Article from Hitsdailydouble:
http://www.hitsdailydoubl...ormill.cgi

CALLING PLANET EARTH: The Artist Still Known as Prince is on target to sell approximately 100k of his new album, Planet Earth, and first for Columbia, which is kinda dwarfed by the 2.8 million he gave away a couple of weekends ago in the U.K. with copies of the Sunday Mail. Strangely, he hasn’t made it available on iTunes, but the single, “Guitar,” is available as a download on Verizon. That will put him into a head-to-head battle with UTV/UMe’s Now 25 in its second week and Disney’s Hannah Montana 2 soundtrack. Among the other chart newcomers, Island’s Canadian rockers Sum 41 look to be in the 35-40k range for their new album, Underclass Hero, while Billy Ray Cyrus (or Daddy Montana) could do an impressive 20k for his Buena Vista bow. Marc Anthony’s Sony Norte soundtrack for the movie El Cantante, in which he stars with wife Jennifer Lopez, appears to be headed for 20-25k, while Epic’s Yung Berg EP should sell 15k, give or take. Overall, the market was down slightly more than 2% vs. last week, down almost 9% from same week last year and now down under 15% year-to-date. You may now return to perusing Dan’s Papers while lounging in your Hamptons beach house. (7/25p)

It'll probably go #1, #2, or even #3 on the Billboard charts, but I won't be surprised if it will never go platinum. I think it will float steadily and then sink just like 3121 did because of the whole controversy about the Mail on Sunday stint Prince has gotten involved with nearly two weekends ago. It could've been a worldwide sleeper hit and judging from where the U.S. is in the music industry nowadays, Prince really screwed himself up in my opinion.

I dont think it will chart higher than #10. I dont watch tv much, but Black Sweat got played on tv quite a few times on all 3 big music channels (BET, MTV, and VH1) and this is a teen-driven market. And I'm pretty sure only the die-hard Prince fans know about his Sunday mail stint. I think the promotion for this album was worse than 3121 to be honest....

I believe Planet Earth will sell 107,000 copies and come in at #2.

If the stars align, it'll go #1.

The worst it will be is #3.

If he would have promoted it this week, it would have probably gone #1. But it doesn't seem like he cares too much. I don't blame him.

So PE should sell 300k in total, by and large.

I would agree if there was more competition but he seemed to pick a good week where there isn't a lot to compete with it. 100K could very well put it to #1. Its biggest competition is probably the NOW cd..

3121 likewise didn't have a lot of competition. Musicology came out when Usher's Confessions was blowing up so it never had a chance at #1.

The album will be DOA and if it does chart, it may not be very high. I haven't even heard a single song from the album yet.

When 3121 came out, the High School Musical soundtrack was still blowing up everywhere. But I think 3121 blew it off the top spot for a couple of weeks and then it went down. So with that said, 3121 went gold and HSM went 4x Platinum.

The biggest competitions Planet Earth will have is promotion, the Now CD, the Hairspray and Hannah Montana soundtracks, and TI's new album. But I think PE will be OK!

I thought the promotion with verizon would have more impact on sales ...

3121 was at #1 for one week with 181 k copies sold.
Nowadays most records have their sales peak in their first week. And most #1 albums stay on top only one week. So according to Hitsdaily PE will probably be #1 with 100 k albums sold if NOw 25 or Hannah Montana don`t sell more this week biggrin

That's shocking! But the verizon thing really didn't have that much impact, even though there was the Guitar video. I doubt that the Now 25 CD will drop in sales, judging from the success of the previous ones. I don't know much about the HM soundtrack. But I still think PE will hit at least #2 with 75k sold because of the album not being on Itunes or any other digital music marketplace an some of the acclaim it's getting.
