Back in the early 90s, a friend of mine's dad was good friends with GB and he used to throw parties for GB when he came to L.A. to perform. Well, his pops came up to me and said "Don't mention Prince. George hates that dude." So me being the arrogant ass 20-somethinger that I was, at the party I asked GB point blank why he didn't like Prince and he said: "Man, that dude isn't doing anything we ain't seen before and yet he gets all this credit for that shit. He's overrated as an artist and as a musician." I sat there and was like "Wow, what a fuckin hater" to myself. As I walked off, I got teased in jest by his pops and some of GB's hanger-ons after his pops told him I was a Prince fan, but it was all good, I didn't get pissed I just kinda laughed at a grown ass man like GB having that much haterade in his system. Thats strange especially since George has done several projects at Paisley and 1 of Princes main guitars is called 'The George Benson' and on the back George wrote a nice inscription to Prince. I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like maybe GB was hating on Prince in the beginning, but then got over it. I graduated bitches!!! 12-19-09

I wish I had recorded the conversation. Things could be all clear now, but back then, I'd bet my life that GB wasn't feeling Prince and that he held those sentiments verbatim. Again, I was forewarned not to mention Prince cuz they all knew I was a huge P fan. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

Unless I am mistaken, the guitar in the pic below was a gift from George Benson to Prince. I think there is a picture of George's autograph on the back of the guitar. Seems odd that he would say those things about Prince and then give him a guitar. They could have been cool by then (Or GB could have been cool, I've never heard of P hating on GB) but back then GB was a P hater. Like I said above, I wish I had recreded the whole conversation because it became the running joke everytime I saw GB over at their crib, this was in the early 90s. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

I read in a brazilian newspaper that George Benson jammed with Chaka Khan and Prince in a small club around 98-99. And some people told me he guested on some Prince concerts around that era. Could somebody confirm?
Anyway, I hope George now acknowledges Prince´s talent. Both are truly great musicians.

Anyway, I hope George now acknowledges Prince´s talent. Both are truly great musicians. I can't remember the year but I think it was around 93-95 during London concerts. I went to an aftershow and both Chaka and George Benson played with Prince on stage. George and Prince jammed on guitar together. I was there. Just can't remember which club and which year, but definitely between 93-95. I tend to think 93, the band featured Michael B on drums at that time. [Edited 7/25/07 1:25am]

Yeah,George Benson recorded an album at Paisley Park in the mid-90s.He and Prince jammed together onstage,as well.Plus,George is a Jehovah's Witness, something that he and Prince have in common.

As far as the performance goes, I was somewhat underwhelmed with the pair of them that night. However I do remember Mayte landing around my right shoulder during a stage dive, most impressive that was Emporium aftershow a couple of days later was incredible though but no guests as far as I recall.

Pete Sampras once spat at Prince as they both exited Wimbledon together and Prince's pristine BMW spashed the old, beat-up sedan Sampras had hired for the two weks. Passers by were perplexed to see a fuming Sampras fisting shaking in the direction of quick retreating Prince. Prince was later seen at a high profile nightclub in the centre of London crying into a glass of Chardonnay. Onlookers commented on how his love of tennis had been sullied by the whole clumsy misunderstanding. Prince and Pete Sampras have never appeared at the same venue since.

Yes, I have even read that GEorge Benson is the one who "introduced" Prince to the Jehovah Witness religion. I thought the story was GB was recording at Paisley Park and got into discussion about JW with Prince and Prince decided to check it out further.... and did some bible study with Larry Graham.
