I haven't seen it here in UK or online- any idea if a digital version is kicking about ? It was available for a limited time on CD - initially, I think, sent out to some people who had submitted an order for Crystal Ball online through the 1-800 ordering service, and also subsequently available online through the official website. It was never released through other retail stores.
It is a relatively rare item as a CD. . Right -- I had placed and subsequently cancelled my order for Crystal Ball through 1-800-NEW-FUNK because it hadn't arrived by the time I could drive down the street and buy it. Yet I did still receive a copy of The War cassette. "The War" was also offered as a download through the NPG Music Club; I bought it so I wouldn't have to transfer it off my cassette to get it as a digital file. Probably the best purchase I made from the club. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

this track is cool. something i would listen to all the time but it's definitely interesting to hear prince being so avantgarde just weeks after he dropped the stink bomb that was NPS. i used to play this on my drives out to paisley...it was exactly the length of the drive from my apt in loring park. i wish prince would play gigs like that again. such a treat.

the track would sit right alongside the classic B Sides of yesteryear! - if it were a b-side of course!

It kinda proves that the genius is still capable of producing 'groundbreaking' material. The worrying/sad thing is that this might mean that he isnt that bothered for most of the time. I actually like Planet Earth though its easy to think that if he chose too, he could make something so free sounding as The War or even part of TRC and satisfy his hardcore fans at the expense of the contemporary/commercial brigade.
This is the interesting thing. Even now, like we had TRC (which for me, The War was like a precursor to), and then after it we get Musicology and 3121. It's the same thing in play - it's expanding, and contraction of Prince's output. Fans ask 'Why, if he can do that, does he chose to do this instead?'... That's the source of a lot of fan's disappoint I think - they want and expect something, and when Prince's stuff doesn't meet those expectations, they say the music is rubbish. You have the opposite too - People who see stuff like TRC, The War (and Planet Earth) as the rubbish he's putting out one year, when another year, he can put out a CD of concise commercially viable pop songs like Musicology or 3121! I love 'the War' - It still entrances me like it did in 1998. At the time I was into the same kind of stuff he was referencing in the lyrics too, so I totally hooked into that. . [Edited 7/21/07 17:08pm] I'm a big fan of Clinton - P-FUnk and Chocolate city etc which now I think of it has a similar vibe to The War You all have heard Gil Scott Heron's, "The Revolution Will Be Televised", haven't you? Another brilliant song that was a major influence on social activist rap (The Message, Tribe Called Quest, etc.). P was definately giving props to and stealing from that classic. Prince's musical vocabulary is encyclopedic.

I just got this song yesterday, and I cannot stop listening to it. Even at 26 minutes, I've probably listened to it 6 times since yesterday. It is simply amazing, riveting, brilliant - whatever label you want to put on it. I don't think this one will ever leave my iPod.
