People who compare Planet Earth to Empty Room...

...should be shot.

That is all.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Now that you've drawn my attention to it, the tempo and instrumentation and feel remind me strongly not only of Empty Room, but Moonbeam levels too.

Though I prefer Empty Room if that avoids me getting shot smile

Those aren't raisins, are they? Cuz raisins (not to mention Raisinets) give me gas.

Then again, that might be appropriate. lol

The guitar solo in each song are extremely similar to each other.

LOL - if raisins gave you gas, then how could Raisinettes NOT give you gas? Seems like a foregone conclusion!

Sorry, but I do hear the comparison. It's not a carbon copy or anything, but to my ears, it does recall elements of "Empty Room". Shoot me. shrug

confuse What's the problem with hearing elements of the style of "Empty Room" in "Planet Earth"? Are you questioning my ability to distinguish similar sounds, or are you implying that "Planet Earth" is a crappy song and can't compare in terms of quality?

Does anyone remember when John Fogerty (solo) was sued by his old record label because he sounded too much like C.C.R. (which was his sound).

It was thrown out of court . . . but saying that Prince sounds like old Prince? Seems kinda obvious.

Raisinets was a joking reference to another song on the album. (Mr. Goodnight, I think?)

Well, that's a subjective assessment. Personally, I adore both songs, and I'm not one bit ashamed to admit it! razz

I dont think its beyond the realms of possibility that Prince does look to recapture the essence of his own songs now and again. coming to think of it, everything since Rave Un2 has been some kind of attempt to reference himself (with exception to The Rainbow Children).

He probably thought..."yeah that Empty Room song was cool, but my fans already have that one, I cant get away with putting it on an album now, so Ill just turn this Planet Earth song I have into something similar". Then again he did it with The Dance.

There are definite similiarites between the two, but they are still different enough in styles and quality. I much prefer Empty Room. The lyrics, the melody, the guitar solo (I anm refering to the NPG version released a few years back). I always thought Empty Room would have been an excellent closing track on One Night Alone - i've sequenced it so on my Ipod. Seeing him perform it live in Manchester in 2002 was a mind blowing experience - here's hoping he pulls it out again for O2.

I can take or leave planet earth though. Apart from the solo at the end, it doesn't grab me like Empty Room does.

The latter.

The bootleg version of Empty Room had better structure than the mid 90s version he did the video for. I love the lyrics of Empty Room, but he hasn't done the song justice in my eyes. So until he does Planet Earth > Empty Room.

Having listened to PE only once (still waiting for the CD itself to really digest), the title track (to me) does musically sound like a relative of Empty Room and She Gave Her Angels.

Empty Angels?
She Gave Her Room?

The Empty Room reference refers to what happens when you play the album for others.

As far as the song PE goes he still uses the cheesy over the top keyboards in the title song when it calls for horns, so frustrating.
