Question for those who don't care for Prince's slow jams...

What's wrong with you??? lol
Seriously, what don't you like about them? It seems that most fans either love them or don't care for them.I'm curious to hear about people's individual reasonings.

only certain love songs i dont like.. cause they're too depressing or mushy.. it's really not a Prince thing.. it goes for any artist for me.. ironically though I like '17 Days' .. not really a love song, but about a heartbroken lover.. probably i love the music.. I guess i have to be in the mood for those type of songs.. otherwise it's depression city..

I like the slow jams. "Still Would Stand All Time", for example, always gets me a little choked up. As does "The Beautiful Ones".

But if I'm driving in my car doing 80mph and I get into the groove of say "We Can Funk" and "Tick Tick Bang", I just have to skip over the (pure brilliance of) songs like "Joy In Repetition" and "Still Would..."

Different songs for different moods.
Although, sometimes I'm in a whole-album mood where I have to listen from start to finish. That is my favorite listening mood!

It depends on the song. I think "Somewhere Here on Earth" is fantastic, while "Future Baby Mama" is deplorable to my ears.

I like the 2 on PE, but they did start to get really, really cookie-cutter for a while.

I don't have any beef with any of the older ones, hmmm, never really liked Slow Love, or Insatiable - but listened to D&P recently and started to dig Insatiable too as one of the better tracks on the LP.

Do you really think there are people who hate ALL his slow jams?

That is bullshit of course.

Personally i love his slow jams that have mostly organic instrumentation and show a sense of soul (How come U dont call me anymore, Adore, Power Fantastic, Dark, I love you, but I dont trust you anymore, Somewhere here on earth).

But i hate it when he moves into the terrority of bland, generic, plastic sounding R&B (a lot of songs on Emancipation, The greatest romance, Future Baby Mama). I don't tolerate that kind of crap from other artists. Why i should praise Prince then for those kind of songs?

To me, most contemporary R&B has nothing to do with real soul. Its mostly 'fabricated' music without real feeling. And IMO Prince is lowering himselve by trying to follow that type of music.

Amen to this. Coldn't have sead it better myself. And I'll take it one step further...

I have a hard time getting into a slow jam unless the LYRICS are up to par. Love songs have to have something new to say (or at least a different way to say it). Unfortunately, I think some of Prince's slow songs have banal, average lyrics. Truth be told, the lyrics to "Adore" aren't even that great. But the music carries it along. I think after "Adore" -- for me -- there has to be a good lyric. And then, as stated above, it can't be the plasticy, stereotypical contemporary R&B backdrop.

This is why I also love "Somewhere Here on Earth" (GREAT instrumentation and lyrics that better than run-of-the-mill) and while I don't HATE "Future Baby Mama," the lyrics are silly and the sound of the song is a ploy for urban radio airplay. Sounds just like half of what's out there.

"The Lyrics to Adore aren't all that great..." eek eek eek

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one neutral
"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

They don't have to be great. The music and singing are so great the lyrics don't have to be Shakespere. I think that is the thing a lot of people don't understand about RnB ballads.

It is really a culture issue. African-American audiences want slow songs to grind to with someone special. We are not really interested in deep meaningful lyrics when we are trying to be with our significant others.

The lyrics to 'Adore" in my opinion are great.
