Yep. They only count as one. You could release a 10-disc box set and it would still only count as 1 release.

None of the side-project or protege albums should be counted, imo. They aren't Prince albums.

You are correct.

And that's why I don't call them "Prince Albums", but rather "Side Projects". And that's also why I give 4 different totals and separate them. That way people are free to count however they wish.

Some would say that the compilations aren't albums either, so I separate them.

But I include them all to be complete. And because the original article had to include them to come up with 46.

And on some side projects he laid down everything, even the lead guide vocals to be followed. And on "New Power Soul", he is the lead vocalist.

Some would even call that a "Prince album". It's all very subjective.

Actually this is Prince's 61st album, counting compilations and his own side projects. And this doesn't count Tamar's album or any of the other canceled projects. If you don't count side projects, then it's 37.

What exactly are all the side projects? I know a few but I couldn't come up with a total of 61.

I've listed them all because people thought I was nutty.

Actually, they're right, but I try to hide it here. wink

It's actually 57 to 61, as 4 of them are still up for debate.

Prince, U2 and McCartney....old fogies trying to squeeze out the last couple of dimes from their former glory.

Sad....as if they millions they get from touring and back catalog is not enough. God forbid they would try to just make some great music and earn their money through sales and not shilling for big media, big tech and coffee.

that's the point, no matter how great the music is the general audience really isn't interested in it anymore. popular music is for teens, and teens ain't into old folks. Prince knows this, and knows the money isn't in record sales it is in concerts. it doesn't matter how great or bad his music is, it will sell the same no matter what, save for a couple of thousand copies.

guess what, the rest of the world isn't waiting for a great Prince album. they simply don't care. but they know he rips the shows, and are more willing to drop a couple of bills to see him live, where his real star shines, than buy a $10 album, regardless of whether they would like it or not.

TRUE...as someone who has worked in/with the music industry for a long time...both majors and independents...there really isn't any money for the artist in record sales ANYWAY...never has been. The idea of someone getting a million dollar deal and LIVING THE DREAM/MAKING IT...is, honestly, complete B.S. It's all a loan that needs to be paid back to the label WITH INTEREST and then there is not much left for the artist after the video directors, lawyers, managers, etc are paid...not to mention the taxes.
KUDOS to Prince for finding alternative ways to get the word out...

Well, turn in your fan card. Seriously, though, can you come up with the 46 that's stated in the article?

With 46 they have to be including side projects, so I'm correcting that number. It's much higher and his solo/band work is much lower.

Here's a slightly different cut and paste. Feel free to correct or explode all over that which you disagree with.

This article is right on! This guy gets it!

It used to be that tours were a way of selling albums, but now it's the other way around: albums are a way of selling tours. And that's where you make the money -- selling tickets and merchandise. The more you can promote yourself -- God forbid make your music available for free! even if it might be the next Purple Rain -- the more people will want to check you out, buy tickets, merchandise, and your back catalogue.

Prince ain't trying to squeeze dimes out of his former glory. Have you seen him perform live? He'll give anyone MORE than their money's worth. He's as exciting to watch now than he was 20+ years ago. So then, what's wrong with giving away music to get people to come to your shows? People gonna have a good time, and that's a promise you can take to the bank, literally.
[Edited 7/18/07 23:21pm]

AMEN BRUDDA! P's live performances are what life is worth living for! When the Musicology Tour rolled through the Bay Area I went and when he came back a second time in less than 4 months I went again and BOTH SHOWS WERE FLAWLESS!

Compare that to some other live shows where you blow a wad for nada and well, you know the rest...

Why not give the album away at the EARTH concert? How about instead of selling it to a right wing rag do something productive with it? If it was really about getting it in people hands why not attach it to something worthwhile?

PRINCE DID NOT GIVE AWAY HIS ALBUM, he sold it to be a marketing gimmick for a newspaper.

I'm so glad Prince didn't participate in the Live Earth concerts, they were such a farce. Almost all the entertainers I watched looked and sounded like shit, except Alicia.

Those concerts probably generated so much pollution (private jets on top of all the commercial ones) and trash, that it out-weighed any message. Most people were there for the entertainment and most likely didn't learnb much or change their lifestyles afterwards.

Prince's new one ain't a classic and it's just as well he dodn't sign to Starbucks as it would have compared unfavourably to Mac's.

You seem to be basing your notion on the old and, now outdated, idea that BIG TIME record sales = success for a musician, or good music.

Fact is, no one (Not even Timberlake) is having big record sales compared to years past. Artists make most of their money from touring.

2ndly, great music doesn't equal big sales and big sales doesn't equal great music.

Thank you for telling this MOFO the truth about the situation.

The industry dug this hole themselves by mistreating Prince and other veteran artists in favor for this shit we have on the radio now. Also pure greed has come back to bite them in the ass. I wonder what Prince's per album take will be for this album ? 25 cents ? 40 cents? And they have the nerve to sell an album for 19.99.

Marketing Genius! I think this Album will be talked about for many years to come, not only for the amazing way of distribution (mush as I dislike the mail) but the content of the somgwriting and the ecelectic nature of the album. Not one to be a great believer of topical Global affairs, which I find have agendae of thier own, but also this hits the current climate of topical affairs with a nail on the head too! More brilliance from my fave malse musician...Bring it on!!

Well, I know better, which I why I said that the 61 represented compilations and side projects. Then I broke it the #$&! down.

But whether someone uses 28, 37 or 57-61 as a number, it should it fact be specified as to what the person is referring to, even if 99.9% of their readers couldn't care less where the number 46 was pulled. wink

He's a hard worker came across loud and clear and that much is accurate.

And, as you know, it's not very straight forward. Some of Prince's side projects have just as much Prince input as his solo or band projects.

And I'm not going to split hairs. For example, Prince put "New Power Soul" and "Kamasutra" in the side project category, not me. And it is after all his music.

If I'm lucky, I can only count it (with corrections from you and many other kind souls).

And "Xenophobia" has never been apart of that collection, although it was released as an excellent live track on his ONA box set.

Bono isn't Catholic. His dad was Catholic, but his mom was Protestant and he was raised that way. It was his dad's choice. Bono was briefly tied to a charismatic sect of Christianity as a young man, but he quickly left them. As an adult, he hasn't adopted any particular branch of Christianity over any other.

Personally I think that this was marketing genius on Prince's part. There's an element that I'm suprised that no-one has hit on - there's a whole generation of teens out there that have either never heard of Prince or have only heard one or two tracks - with the free release of this album he has made himself accessible to a whole new market. I wonder how many new fans have been created in the last week? I wonder how many back list albums have been sold in the last week? I wonder how many extra concert tickets have been sold in the last week?

For me this album isn't nearly as good as it should be but it is diverse and shows the man's considerable talent.

At the end of the day it's not about the desperate attempts of an aging rock star to hang onto their carreer (as posted by one misguided member) - it's a mix of extremely clever marketing creating accessibility and cold revenge on the music industry who fed off him for so long. I read an article recently that said he had got rid of his manager (correct me if I'm wrong) under the premise of 'why should someone else make money from my efforts?' Abso-bloody-lutely!!!Good on him I say - and if I, the loyal fan and consumer happen to get something for free... well... it can't be bad can it. cool
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

C'mon and dance while you, while you still have your cherry babe, cherry babe..

I read an article recently that said he had got rid of his manager (correct me if I'm wrong) under the premise of 'why should someone else make money from my efforts?' Abso-bloody-lutely!!!Good on him I say - and if I, the loyal fan and consumer happen to get something for free... well... it can't be bad can it. cool

Serioulsy I don't think Planet Earth is the best album to showcase prince's genius to the whole generation of teens.

And to be honest, young teens dont care about Prince, they think he's old and old fashioned, face it. lol

The young generation only cares about young artists. Prince represents an era they didn't know.

I think the only fans he has re gained are those who have forgotten about him since the 80's.

cool Prince has been selling records for the last 30 years now. How can anyone say he does not know what he is doing business wise. When you are in the game for this long you know who to play with & how to come out wining. What i do not understand is some of the negativity i have been reading about this topic. The only selling out he has done is his shows. cool

please...that sounds nice, but get over it. The only love there is for
cashing the check (which is fine with me...we all have to make our
respective livings - I just get annoyed with this notion of "prince
is giving his music away..he loves his fans and the ppl of
earth...higher calling...yada yada yada"...again, please). Let's call
it what it is - a savvy, creative business move designed to generate
press for an album that probably wouldn't have recd much press or
sales no matter how good or bad it actually is...and the ongoing
coverage doesn't hurt his touring either, right?

Prince is giving away his music, I think, because it's all about love and God for him anyway...he sees his music as a sort of public service...his calling, something like that. At any rate, when you think of the joy and pleasure Prince, McCartney and U2 have spread over "Planet Earth"....we can only be grateful for any music they give away that might touch an insane mind on our troubled planet...they are all incredibly gifted souls who touch alot of lives...however they do it....is good by me.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few teens on the Org. Some are as young as 15 years old. Of course, they don't represent the majority of the people on this site, but don't sleep on the youngsters.

Prince is a musical and marketing genius #1, #2 most true artist make music not 4 the money but 4 the love of making the music itself #3 Paul McCartney, U2 and Prince have enough money 2 do what ever they want when ever they want, so why do U think it's n ur words "to squeeze out the last couple of dimes from their former glory" there glory is n the books already 4 evey1 2 C. No offense but that sounds like some1 who's never played music and was raised n the lip sync era.

If you can make millions, by being different? Why not?
Former glory or not ... they're still there on the stage and we aren't
