Amazing horn arrangements... some of the best he's ever done.
Stunning background vocals.

I'm VERY much in agreement! For me, it's just a fucking FANTASTIC album overall.

The Newpower Soul album is at least as good as Controversy and "The Black Album".

It certainly has a vastly superior sound production than those two or any of the eighties recordings for that matter.

I dig it too. It definitely didn't grab me immediately but once it was on my iPod and a song from it came on randomly it always made me feel good. I started listening to it more and more, and now I like it.

That's how it happened with me as well. Although I was hearing tracks like Mad Sex, Come On, The One, (eye Like) Funky Music, and the title track in strip clubs, and they quickly started rubbing off on me....pun definitely intended!

However, I'm disappointed and surprised that I've never heard Wasted Kisses in a strip club...WTF?

No, its not his best, but its FAR from his worse (that would be Rave for me).

That would be Dirty Mind for me.

This is one thing that I love about the org. Someone points out something about a song or album that leads you to appreciate it even more.

I didn't get "New Power Soul" until a few years after it was released and I didn't think much of it. But since then I've heard it more and more often. In my opinion, it's definitely not among his greatest work at all, BUT at the same time I agree that it is actually a very good, enjoyable album. I was just listening to it and there really aren't any bad songs on it. It's just a fun album. Definitely not a rock album, just funk/r&b. "The One" is a great song that I love listening to, Rhonda's fretless bass sounds incredible on that song.
And I love how the whole cd starts...

"2 the darkness...let there be light.
2 the soundman, turn up my voice real tight.
2 the NPG...if you're in this mutha, scream.
Show me how y'all get down...1...2...3.. Come on!
"

The rock outro of "When you Love Somebody" ends way too soon though...

BTW there are a couple of songs on there where P is singing about a girl in London that he's obviously in a relationship with....anybody got the inside scoop on that? And it's funny how in the liner notes he thanks both Mayte and Manuela T.

Speaking of which, the cd booklet for New Power Soul is without a doubt one of his coolest. Very creative and entertaining...the drawings especially. They remind me of the NPG Exodus booklet or the 1999 album cover drawing, very colorful and funky and everybody is slightly warped...very cool album! I agree, "New Power Soul" is underrated. It's not awesome but it is a solid album that's very enjoyable.

And I disagree about "The Gold Experience"...that album's not overrated, it's excellent. It would have been even better had it included "InterActive," "Empty Room"....etc. He really could have had one of the greatest albums of all time if he would have compiled all his greatest songs from that period on one cd instead of on separate cd's but I guess that's for another post. biggrin

As the one who started this post, I'm thrilled to read the responses to New Power Soul. I've listened to it a few times since hearing the new album Planet Earth, which I find disappointing overall. I'm glad someone reminded me of the awesome, "Freaks on this Side", which I neglected to add to my list of great NPS tracks. Once upon a time I wouldn't have liked that song--so typical of Prince's weirder, darker side....but something about "Freaks..." is so damn NASTY and different from anything he'd done before; "YOU GOT TO GET DOWN!!"...I love that! And the HORNZ on that tune...damn!

I for one LOVE the production on NPS...it's so TIGHT sounding. The song NPS is unbelievable....so many changes/twists/solos...it's quite a ride, and it's funky.

And yes, I thought EXODUS was dreadful music.

I will Groove 2 all the Love being shown 2 this album. Production-wise he should have done something with those beats. But the rest is great! When the drums come in on Freaks On This Side. Funk or what!

Imago you just got to get down to a brand new sound! NPS will just grow greater with age! Those horns are sweet Bliss. I too do not like the Gold Experience; I hate P control, We March, Now, they really spoil the record which is ok apart from these

Like I said before, I wasn't feeling it when I first got "New Power Soul," but a funny thing happens...When you are really diggin Prince but you are kinda tired of the P cd's you normally listen to, check out some of the ones you don't like...Listen to them with no expectations, and many times you will find yourself enjoying these forgotten songs/cd's (whichever they may be for you) and actually "getting it." It took me a while but I finally "got" NPS.

Woefully underrated record. Not a classic, but far from the piece of shit everyone here seems to think. I spliced my favorite trax from NPS together with some of my fave songs form "Come" and wound up with a nice little funky disc.

yeah well thats rather stupid.

if i listed my 5 fav paul mccartney albums OBVIOUSLY none of them would feature lennon, they never worked with eachover out of the beatles.

No, they wouldnt be his last five, i only have a couple. They would be Venus and Mars, Wild Life, Back To The Egg and London Town.

besides, recently (well, yesterday) i listened to Controversy and a few other early prince albums. There brilliant and evrything but i just prefere the 90's stuff.

Emancipation is a awsome record. Emale, Holy River, Betcha By Golly Wow!, Style, Jam Of The Year, One Kiss At A Time, Face Down are some of my favs from that album.

NPS is a good album, i cant understand why its hated so much. Come On, Push It Up!, The One, Shoo-Bed-Ooh are really good songs.

PS : I really hate it when people go "Have You Heard His 80's Stuff??". What?? Arnt i allowed to like anything thats not Purple Rain or 1999?? I can like whatever i want. Some people like Diamons and Pearls, some like Lovesexy. Some Like For You, some like Graffiti Bridge. I like his 90's stuff. most like his 80's stuff. its enevitable that on a forum with 1000's f members were all gonna have different opinions.

I agree, its a great album, but nobody's favorite... .

The CD Poll shows that its not picked even once in anyone's top 3...

POLL: ---> http://www.prince.org/msg...4943?&pg=1

I think its just one of those CD's you pick up when youve heard Lovesexy about 40 times in the last month and want something completely different...

it's not a bad album, but i have always considered this album as a NPG release and not a prince record regardless that's he's on the cover and does all the vocals. I just prefer exodus over this one.

no harm..no foul
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Right from the top, the song "New Power Soul" is one of the tightest, funkiest, most casual sounding trax he'd ever released.
"Mad Sex" is weird, nasty, original, and head-bobbing funky.
"Until U're In My Arms Again" is one of his sweetest ballads ever.
"Come On" is so casual-funky and cool.
"The One" is one of his sexiest slow-jams with great lyric and powerful vocal.
"Until U Love Somebody" is an undercooked yet catchy pop jem.
This is a very good, very listenable

As a longtime Prince fan, I want to tell you people somethin'...

New Power Soul is my guilty pleasure Prince album!

When it first came out, I thought it would be as dreadful as the previous NPG album.

After the first listen, I thought it was drab by his normal standards...It was, afterall, nothing close to his epic recordings; Purple Rain, Sign of the Times...

But as the summer progressed, and I continued listening, something amazing happened...

I realized how addictive it was. How GOOD it was.

I'm a defender of 'NewPowerSoul'

What a GREAT and FUNKY record! New Power Soul is KILLER!!

I remember when buying the cd the 1st day it came out in'98...opened it up and turned the volume up high to the title track!

It was summer and it was a JAM! Each song just kept the flow and PRINCE surprised me again with another excellent album.

The production is good, the sounds and things going on all around your ears (listen close to the cd again) just make it a pleasure.

In fact, the remix singles were also added sweet cream to the '98 mix. Then he toured and hearing the NPS Jams live was magical.

I remember living in LA waiting in line for tickets to various shows and fans were jamming the NPS cd and jamming it LOUD! "Come On", "I Like Funky Music", "Mad Sex" were being sung and danced to in the lines by all and EVERYONE was having a good time to the music.

And that is what it's all about when it comes to Prince music..."the emotion" whether it's fun, thought provoking or shared.

PRINCE and his New Power Soul RAWK!
Have a nice day. cool
