There needs to be INTENT. You need to be able to prove that the buyer is purchasing the paper to get the cd which can't be proven. If you could prove categorically that half a million copies MORE were sold than at any other time in the papers history, then i agree the case could POTENTIALLY be made for half a million cd's brought. But other than that, people are buying THE NEWSPAPER, and they're just getting some additionally shit for free which they WERE'NT purchasing. Might as well be a free tampon - of no use to at least half the buyers. It gets ridiculous if you count that as an intentional cd sale. Think about it intelligently for a second. If you really wanna count that then lets take it to the next level - here's a plan for prince's next album: starting at the beginning of 2008, prince releases a free copy of his latest album 'Bite My Carbon Footprint' (working title only) with every loaf of bread sold, for the entire year. This will guarantee that he has the number one album for the entire year and has the biggest selling album of all time! Am i a fucking genius, or is this just a stupid idea? (while i may have the occasional moment of brilliance, sadly i'd have to go with the latter) . [Edited 7/14/07 3:58am]

I gather you don't like the album then? i haven't even heard it...and i look forward to purchasing it here in the state but all this talk about the marketing of this album is silly...marketing should get folks excited about the product, not excited about the marketing itself. Space for sale...

Well, I understand the recordstore owners in the UK, hehehe. For the rest it is, of course, a genius plea for attention.

But every song you hear on the radio or on TV is advertising itself anyway. What's the difference between a radio jingle which wants you to buy yoghurt or a Rhianna song which wants you to buy a Rhianna song?

I don't think it will count towards Billboard's tracking of his album sales. This of course means nothing to Prince anyways, as the real money to be mad is in touring, and the album is being used in England to promote the tour--not vice versa Moreover, whether billboard tracks it or not, or there was intent or not, 2.5 million people still get their hands on the CD on Sunday. I would assume many wont' toss it, and at the very least will give it to someone who would be more open to listening to it if they wouldn't.

BUT, playing Devil's Advocate, could it not be argued that those CDs were indeed sold to the newspaper and THEY gave it out for free? IF that was true, what does that reduce the value of the album to? A dollar?

A few years ago, Jewel released a song called "Intuition". The song and the video were a satirical jab at the Britneys of the music biz who are popular only because of sex appeal. Its chorus, "follow your heart, your intuition, it will lead you in the right direction" is meant as encouragement to the real singer-songwriters to not sell out. Anyway, as intelligent as that song was, it ended up in a ladies' razor commercial. The name of the product? "Intuition".

It wouldn't be a "quiet victory". And then there would always be those who'd say it was only because of the giveaway gimmick. If the music is great, that's all I care about.

Listen, the system was set up by the music industry. They have endorsed crap for years through the promotion of "nominal" artist who have less talent than Prince. Now, that the industry is suffering, it is just the chickens coming to rooster for the music industry. Don't forget about the Payola scams that the music industry has been involved in for years and years to push favorites and totally anniliate gifted and talented artist who fell out of favor with the big wigs or who had low music sales. Where are the Paula Coles, Rad, Ani DeFranco, Lenny Kravitz? These and other gifted musicians have had to find other ways to get their music out because once the sales drop, the music industry also drops the artist. I think it is nonsence to cry "foul" when you set the system up and now that someone has found a loophole in the system and uses it to expose the music industry for the vultures that they are. The industry has picked at the bones of talented musicians just to promote idiotic music by mean spirited rappers who would rather bust a cap into someone's a$$ and talk about death instead of realizing that they can finally be heard and share a gift and opportunity that has been given to them to create something of beauty. If Prince has found a way to continue to create music and succeed in busines, I say, more power to him! Shoot,I vote him Business Man of the Year!! "A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1 People can slam their door, disagree and fight it But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son? United States of Division"

Very well written and so true Jamzone It wouldn't surprise me at all if these cd's were counted as sales. I read somewhere were that the distribution of paper sales is being negotiated as records sold. I hope Prince comes out smelling like a rose on this one. The industry like u said have gotten by with so much back stabbing its time 4 them 2 eat the crap they've created. I would also vote him Business Man of the Year, because he sure was the man of the year with Musicology

prince doesn't have to be pulling all this smoke and mirrors bullsh*t. What’s wrong with Prince giving away his music? It’s his music 2 do whatever he like with it. He wants his music out there and everyone is making a big deal of it. The music industry and record stores r freakin out behind this mans business deal. Why? hell a few years ago they could care less about Prince, now all of a sudden they’re all on his dick. WHY? All the man is doing is giving away a cd in the Sunday paper and at his concert. That's what grown folks do. Hell Prince is a Rock Star.

Ok I understand exactly what you’re saying, but how is it his fault that it’s generating so much publicity. He only made the deal with the newspaper company and everyone is all freaked out about it. The record industries r upset and generating the free publicity. They’re pissed off and getting there panties all wet because they’re not in control. They need 2 stay out of his business and handle there own failing empire. Prince said he’s willing 2 do the work, now all of a sudden he’s being paid and everyone is freakin out. Give me a break, whatever publicity he gets without coming out his pocket is great. Let’s see how the cd sells in other countries and then we can talk. It’s a great cd from what I’ve heard and looking forward 2 the release of PE.
