Temptation

When I was 12 were we allowed to play one of our favorite songs just before school was about to finish. I vaguely remember asking my teacher to play "Temptation" from ATWIAD because it was my favourite song at the time. I will never forget the look of horror on my teachers face and on the faces of some of the class mates. We had to sit through the whole thing. It was a catholic school. What a cool memory...

falloff I wish I coulda been there.

I was asking people about the album itself and someone warned about Temptation being kinda nasty and such... sure, it would be the kind of thing that I might have had trouble with a couple of months ago... but I've grown accustomed to Prince's style when he goes into this.

Plus, his screaming is just plain addictive and this is one of the best screaming fits he's done. It's the kind of thing I miss in his more recent material.

But it's one of my favorite songs on the album. Has been since the first listen. Actually, it is my favorite after 'Pop Life' on ATWIAD.

It was one of my favorites when I was a kid, now I hardly ever listen to it anymore, Im more likely to put on something more mellow (ie Parade, For You or Prince).

Sometimes I want to hear screams, thats when I get the iPOD and put Something in the Water on repeat...!

Yeah, I was listening to the ATWIAD album yesterday and when I got this song, I not only enjoyed it, but really took some time to think things over.

Yeah, the guitar is absolutely sick. I don't think I've ever found that and his screaming more addictive on any other song... at least not yet.

But I was wondering.
Did he write it all at once?
Or was the last couple of minutes added later because he thought he was coming on too strong?
Could it be that he added that last segement because The Ladder was slated for the album (continuing the influence of God, etc.)... or maybe the other way around? That that segement's the reason why The Ladder was included.

That would be something if he thought to add it later on... but again, I don't really know much about the songs from the album. But I like hearing little tidbits of history and such.

I dont know if its documented how Prince wrote some of his songs, but as a song writer myself, that seems like the kind of song that was written alone and probably in 2 parts. It wouldnt surprise me if he wrote the second part first, and then maybe got bored and starting with the riff for temptation and making a killer rock song (which ultimately became the first part of the song (if that is not confusing enough ! lol).

A young female Prince fan (now thats some Temptation smile )

Im going home now and will listen to ATWIAD in your honor!

You're absolutely right. During final sequencing of the album around Christmas 1984, Susan Rogers and Prince set up a mobile recording truck, wherever they were on the Purple Rain tour at that point and recorded that last edit piece for Temptation before cutting that into the final master reels.

Oh wow! Like if that isn't awesome enough that he had that going on.
Phew... just can't believe that I thought about that, let alone that there was some truth to my curiosities.

I guess I've really gotten into Prince's mind and know quite a bit of what he's capable of. Although, come later on when I get Dirty Mind & Controversy, things might change a tiny bit when he throws me another curveball... but that's kinda what he's all about.

aww, that's sweet.

Yeah, I feel like I don't check into ATWIAD all that much considering I got it over a month ago... but when I do pick it up when I'm in the right mood (like I just wanna chill out, but also think about some important issues)... I just think its amazing.

My top three favorites are Pop Life, Temptation & Condition of the Heart. Pop Life's also had some good remixes of it. I've heard the extended version and fresh dance mix and love them both... and Condition of the Heart is so good that I almost wish there were more songs on the album like it (sometimes I wish it was a couple of songs longer)... but its kinda sad and Prince typically doesn't like putting too many sad songs on the same album.

I agree, you have to be in the mood to listen to it, fortunately its been 2 times this month for me! So Ive heard ATWIAD more than Parade this month, which is a rarity for me! Parade and Lovesexy normally get the highest rotation.

By the way, I remember your first review of ATWIAD and you said you wernt sure about Condition of the Heart. I see now that you really like it which is great. It took me a while too, but I love that song.

I feel like I enjoyed ATWIAD the first time cuz I was in the mood for somethign different. Something a little more "out there", relaxing, and carefree... and it gave me everything I wanted. But it's definitely one of the most thought-provoking albums I own cuz my mind went crazy cuz there were so many questions I had about Prince and his attitude and stuff like that.
So in some ways, it is kind of a personal album for him, so that's why I like it as much as I do.

But I am glad that I got into "condition of the heart"... Temptation had me from the first listen and it really was full of surprises. I had no idea he'd add that little bit in the end... which is also good for a laugh.

While out on tour for Purple Rain, Prince was recording as often as he could. It was a fruitful time for him as he was riding on his biggest success ever and wanted to create as much product as he could to capture his spirit. After their 2 shows in Cleveland, Ohio, Prince and some band members (including sax player Eddie M.) traveled back to Los Angeles to see the closing performance(s) of the Victory tour of the (recently reunited) Jacksons (or more accurately Jackson 5) at Dodger stadium. After the show, Prince and others regrouped at Capitol Recording studios in Hollywood to work on Temptation (usually he would record at Sunset Sound, but it was already booked). Prince was able to secure the help of longtime engineer David Leonard to lay down this track. Starting late in the evening on Friday, Prince and Eddie created the track, which ended up being one of the last recorded for the ATWIAD project. Once The Ladder was recorded on Sunday the 23rd, the album would basically be ready for assembly.

This information came from personal interviews with those involved, work orders and a lot of data from the book "Prince: The recording sessions".
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

A little too pedestrian, "blues brothersy" horns for my tastes.

Never liked it.

It is a book that hasn't been released. Not sure how big the market for it is, but it is still at least a year or two from being ready for the market.

Thank you. When it eventually makes it's way to the market or is at least included as part of an UPTOWN project, everyone will know. Until then, the books of UPTOWN are the best way to keep up to date about when/where/how things were recorded.
