I'm 28 I wasn't even born or in my baby years when Prince was in his prime. I first heard Prince's music when I was about 9 years old (1988). The album I listened to was Controversy (not a new release) and I was blown away with his musical genius. I have no fond childhood memories I associate with his tracks I simply judge the music based on his raw talent and creativity.

If I was taken into room with all of princes albums and listened to them each in turn for the first time I would still come to the conclusion his earlier work were him in his prime. The albums which folllowed after 1990 simply dont come close.

you are missing my point...every artist has there so called 'golden period'...prince's was 80 to 87...his creative peak...my point is that he is STILL making good music...maybe not groundbreaking music like he did during his first 10 years ...but it isnt as bad as some people who were young during the 80s would have you believe because they are missing something other than just the music they are hearing ...i am not saying the music is on a par with what he did during the 80s...no long lasting artist has ever been creatively brilliant all through their career but he is still making good music...sometimes great music....listen to 'somewhere here on earth' and tell me that isnt as good as his 80s ballads .... wink

In the past Prince has shown that diversity doesnt necessarily mean a bad album (Sign of the Times is the most obvious example), but it just doesnt work on Planet Earth. Both Musicology and 3121 did sound more cohesive in their.

Are you kidding???

The opposite is true my friend. Musicology and 3121 are much more a mish-mash of songs, while PE is more cohesive (both in production and song choice), like TRC.

The One U Wanna C shoulda been the type of vibe he went with on Rave, instead of making that Sheryl Crow cover. Great effervescent travel song, my favorite on the record so far.

Chelsea Rodgers didn't need another singer, I have know Idea why P didn't sing that song by himself, and the chorus should have been way more uptempo and distinct. After while it sounds like a long jam. The song could have been way better and more disco. The song is dying for a dance mix.

Future Baby Mama is dope. I wish prince would have gone nasty on it with a better spoken bridge, but I love the song nonetheless.

I have strong opinions about the rest of the songs, but I'll keep the comments positive for now. smile

It doesn't let rip enough on PE as it could. It feels like it wants to go off all 'The Beautiful Ones', but his voice isn't upto it any more (no one's fault there, just saying).

Well except for FBM and Mr. Goodnight.

FBM just about passes because it's kinda good, but the two songs together just rip the album in half.

yeah, same here. totally timeless and cool song and then he has to go
and mention a pager

lol

in his defence though, he does mention that he doesn't like the pager
and rather has a face 2 face conversation.

but the same thing happened with "U're Gonna C Me" which i think is a
real cool song but then there's that whole

give me a page on my 2 way
i hit u back with no delay

i'm used to it now but the first few times i heard that it made me go
all cringy and shit lol

I've heard Planet Earth twice now and apart from Chelsea Rodgers and Guitar, which are genuinly exciting and funky, the rest seem to be mid-tempo plodders. Hopefully that will change after a few listens...

I've probably listened to the album about 5 times now and I have to admit Lion of Judah and Resolution are growing on me.

My personal surprising fav is 'the one you wanna see' thats a great track ! If you get over the initial country and happy clappy vibe the track is friggin awesome mixture of rock, pop, country and bass funk licks. Prince at his creative best and love the falsetto singing towards the end. cool

I remember reading around here about possible hidden tracks, enchanced stuff, internet only stuff accessed from the CD. Any news on all this?

By now I think I've seen every song on the album elevated to the highest praised and also raked through the the thickest mud.

I'm with you on Lion of Judah though. razz

Impressions on 1st listen...

It's his most consistent commercial album in recent memory.

I can see it appealing to non-Prince fans.

Certainly not experimental or ground-breaking. And there are some clunkers on there (Mr Goodnight I'm looking at you).

Planet Earth, Guitar, Somewhere Here On Earth, The One U Wanna C, Future Baby Mama, and Chelsea Rodgers are all strong on 1st listen.

Production is far more solid than Musicology / 3121, big improvement.

The One U Wanna C is... a lot of fun! I'd read the Shania Twain references in some of the reviews so approached with caution... I can see the link, but it's a really cool song. Should be next single IMO.

... these are impressions after 1 listen mind. It's pretty much immediately accessible, I can see its charms may wear off on repeated listens?...

As I'm in first, I may as well shove my opinion out there!

Planet Earth - 8 out of 10 - Great hauting style. Would have got a 10 if P could just learnt to get in some alternative background singers rather than rely on his own multi layers all the time. You like this if you like "Strays of the world".

Guitar - 7 out of 10 - Great rock pop, Will feature in a segue with Peach somewhere live I'm sure. You'll like this if you like "Peach".

Somewhere here on Earth - 7 out of 10 - Great little ballad, maybe wrongly placed in the track order, but a fine tune and much more original that throw away numbers like On The Couch and Satisfied. You'll like this if you like "One Nite Alone".

The One you Wanna C - 7 out of 10 - Simple but catchy pop tune. In the same vain as When U were mine. Sounds 80s but modern at the same time. You'll like this if you like "Neon Telephone"

Futura Baby Mama - 5 out of 10 - Retro sexy ballad by the numbers. Could do well in the USA where bland RnB rules, but overall, it sounds like an outtake from 1983. You'll like this if you like "I hate U".

Mr Goodnight - 2 out of 10 - No Prince. No. A song that seems to be built around the rap structure of Muse 2 The Pharoahs. Give it up. Please. You'll like this if you like "Good Life - Big City Remix".

All The Midnights In The World - 5 out of 10 - Nothing special, nice tune. You'll like this if you like "Circle Of Amour".

Chelsea Rodgers - 8 out of 10 - Divine bass line! Prince hasn't been this funky in the studio since Days Of Wild! You like this if you like "Gett Off Urge Remix".

Lion Of Judiah
- 7 Out of 10 - Could be the grower. Great rock pop, without being too commercial. Love the vocal styles. You'll like this if you like "Money Don't matter 2 nite".

Resolution
- 7 Out if 10 - Like the previous track, a good little rock number. You'll like this if you like "Splash".

Overall

I've listened to the album about 20 times over the last week and it a fun trip. Nothing special, but enjoyable. Its like part 3 of a musicology/3121/PE trilogy.

But like many films, a fourth installment will be a sequel too far. P needs to pick up the guantlet next time around a break some boundries. He's in cruise control.

Its going to be a nice addition to the car stereo through the summer.

Interesting list. Kind of cool to see how people rate the cds. My picks would be somewhat different -- probably Around the World in a Day and Rainbow Children would be a good bit higher and Emancipation and For You would be lower, but not radically different. I haven't heard any song from the new cd (except for Guitar) and I'll probably just wait to hear it fresh with the store-bought version. Looking forward to it.

I think the whole album has a very good flow.

After the daring opener the single Guitar presents itself and sounds better than when it stands alone.

Prince gets so much stick, people should cut him some slack, and he should care less about trying to please everybody.
This is one damn sweet album.
Much better than 3121

It is too short though. We're missing at least 2 or 3 songs here.

planet earth.....7
guitar.....7
somewhere here on earth...9
the 1 u wanna c.....9 Classic
future baby mama.....7 Not usually my thing, but actually quite sexy
mr goodnight.....5 I have forgiven him for this
all the midnights.....7
chelsea rodgers.....7
lion of judah.....7
resolution.....7

"the 1 u wanna c" This song is classic prince.
There'a lot of humour in the songs

I just hope that there's going 2 b some extra material. We'll see.

I think the true question is the answer to what keeps those of us in anticipation here in the states. What are we expecting from Prince? If he comes out with another enjoyable album equivalent in nature to 3121, I will be happy. Why? Because his music seems happier now more than ever, and I don't mean happy songs. His music has the feel of a man who is at last comfortable and enjoying his talents for the sake of loving what he produces. If he loves it, then chances are we will at least like it.

I do not expect anything Earth Shattering from Prince or any other artist. I am 38 years old, and I don't think there are going to be any more Hotel California moments for me. I have experienced too much, I have seen too much, and I have heard too much. I think this is why, when music takes another dodge in a new direction, folks my age don't really care, and the generation it embraces will be that generation that can still find beauty in the shock of a new idea.

My daughter is two years old, and she finds rain to be fascinating and intriguing, while my 13 year old nephew simply wants to stay dry. My nephew hears something about sex and he snickers, and is fascinated by the mystery of the relationship of a man and a woman, I just want a glass of milk and to get some rest at bed time. Prince could give us another Purple Rain, and we would complain or just ignore it, because we have been there and done that, and he knows that. So I do not expect anything other than something to listen to and enjoy until the next one.

And Oh yeh, If anyone is going to shatter the earth it will be me.
We are all so full of doody here

I definitely think that Planet Earth is an album that shows that Prince is comfortable and happy with his place in music history and with contemporary audiences. This album has an even more relaxed feel to it than even the last two. It also feels like a much more personal album than he's put out in quite some time. As I said on another thread, this album sounds like it was made by a real, living, breathing human being instead of another batch of songs churned out by the Paisley Park factory.
