Sory I can't like Mr Goodnight at all - its got that terrible rap/drawl thing that sounds very awkward - too Emancipation!

The album is spot on upto that point and apart from Resolution is better than 3121. If Prince keeps on this arc of improvement we might get something really speacial next.

I'm listening 2 it right now, & though the sound quality of my copy is poor (& a few songs r not even complete, who on earth put this on p2p's???), i can say without an hesitation that this album makes no sense: it's the worst Prince album ever, sounding like leftovers from the Vault, the melodies being unattractive & poor, the arrangments being unimaginative... Even Child Of The Sun is a better album!!!

Planet Earth doesn't have the raw energy of Prince's previous rock albums (The Undertaker, Chaos & Disorder, The War) & there are many mainstream artists that can do this kinda music better than him!

After Musicology & 3121, which were already unimaginative albums, it's obvious that Prince is going nowhere trying 2 make "mainstream" music. It's time 4 him 2 come back 2 either experimental jazz or minimalist electrofunk, 2 domains that he masters much more than pop-rock.

I'll buy it anyway because it's Prince & i'll support him whatever he releases, but i am very, VERY disappointed sad

My Review:

Planet Earth = Empty Room:
Big Rock opener. Starts off very intimate with just princes voice and piano, then in come the drums. Than for the chorus its even bigger with a stadium rock style chorus. The breakdown is ultra catchy, especially with the keys. 9/10

Guitar = I Like It There / Cream:
Good single material. Has a really good guitar solo that EVRERYONE will end up Air Guitaring. 8/10

Somewhere Here On Earth = One Kiss At a Time / I Love U But I Dont Trust U Anymore:
Very Jazzy. You can imaging Prince at a piano in some french resturant playing this song. Brilliant piano solo by Renato. 9/10

The One U Wanna C = Cinamon Girl :
Pop-Rock. Really Catchy song that will most likely be a single. The slap bass strangely suits the song (I wernt sure at first). Nice bursts of guitar here and there aswell. 8/10

Future baby Mama = (Melody) Eye Hate U :
"I like that umm, Future Baby Mama.." (That really should of been included at the beggining of the song lol) Second best on the album. You wont get the verse out of your head for weeks. Very nice melody and the breakdown works well although could of been more powerfull. 10/10

Mr Goodnight = Push It Up! :
FBM's Cousin. Finnaly prince raps again! (Sort Of). Seeing as im a big NPS fan, i enjoyed this song, but alot of people might not might not. Picture Prince and rosie gaines doing the chorus whilst Tony M does the verses whilst the npg play in the background around 1992 (Gangsta Glam video would suit this song perfectly). 9/10

All The Midnights = Resolution :
This is a short, fun album filler type of song. Although its still good, but its too short to take seriously. When you start to get into it it goes off. 7/10

Chelsea Rogers = In Love :
Best Prince song in years! This is so funky! Shelby also is a nice addition. The whole song is perfect, Insanely catchy melody, funky dtums and keys with more slap bass thrown in on top. Best on the album. 10/10

Lion Of Judah = Wherever You Go :
I think W&L are on the last two tracks of this album. Starts off like Purple Rain with the guitar chords and bass drum combo. Religious undertones are in there somewhere, but its still a good song. 7/10

Resolution = So Far So Pleased:
Cheesy Christian rock. But the songs so catchy and upbeat that you end up humming and singing along. But its another song that too short. 8/10

All in all, the albums better than 3121. It rounds up the trio of albums nicely:

Musicology : 8/10
3121 : 9/10
Planet Earth : 9.5/10

I love 3121 but PE just slightly wins becuase of Chelsea Rogers and FBM.

I thought i'd put a different spin on this for anyone who's not yet heard the album by comparing each track stylistically with other artists - as best i could

Planet Earth = Meat Loaf

Guitar = U2

Somewhere Here On Earth = Miles Davis collaboration

The One U Wanna C = Heart

Future Baby Mama = Al Green

Mr Goodnight = MTV Base

All The Midnights In The World = Jackie Wilson

Chelsea Rodgers = Scissor Sisters

Lion Of Judah = Bible rock

Resolution = Bible rock

This entire album is Super Duper Nice! Mega-melodic and very tasty. And if it was posible, Prince's piano playing skills have really developed nicely. This album amazes me with Prince's seeming ability to keep coming up with new sounding songs. Meaning that although it's obvious the songs are new, from the first time you hear them they already sound like classics.

This album is much more than I was expecting. It's a great project.

oh god, i really want to like this, but i just can't get into it.

The only quality songs are 'somewhere here on earth' (pure class), 'planet earth' and 'chelsea rogers'.. Every other track has something on it that's pure cringe. It's just my opinion. I don't understand how a man that was so electric only a couple of months ago when i saw him live can produce something so uninspired.. sad

This Album is EXTREMELY POOR I'd say.

Just went down to the paper shop to get a copy, listened to the album in the car, and I can safely say that I won't be bothering to listen to it again, as it isn't worthy of being ripped into my mp3 collection. Very very disappointing.

I think prince should only now be labeled 'genius' for actually managing to strike any kind of deal to get some money for this rubbish, it's simply not surprising he's giving the it away to the public for free, I actually feel cheated out of my £1.40 I paid for the paper. The only slightly interesting track on here is the first one, which has echoes of lonely room, apart from that, the rest is complete atonal drivel.

I am deeply concerned now that I have made arrangements to go an see him in concert in London, coz if he plays any of this crap I'll be walking out. To me this is just the latest (and worst) in a slow deterioration of albums. Someone needs to give Prince a boot up the backside and tell him that whats he's producing lately is just a big steaming pile of shite. I'm certain he could do better. I give it 0/10

I just enhanced my "the new age of CD distribution has begun" Prince experience today by getting the album from the supermarket (!). biggrin Here's my review:

Planet Earth - O! My! God! This must be one of the best tracks Prince has ever done! The songwriting, the arrangement, the way things build up - fantastic! And I don't mind the Barry Manilow moment (the bridge is really great in the context of the song). Prince sounds on fire! Classic! 10/10

Guitar - Like it, great pop/rock, just a bit too short. 9/10

Somewhere Here on Earth - One of the best Prince ballads in ages, has a jazzy feel to it, great piano work. Everyone claiming that this is not on par with the stuff from the 80s should get their ears washed. 10/10

The 1 U Wanna C - Extremely catchy pop/rock tune! 9/10

Future Baby Mama - Has a laid back neo-soul mid-to-late 90s R'n'B feel. Very nice songwriting. 9/10

Mr. Goodnight - I can't see why so many people hate this song. Works very nice back to back with FBM. Reminds me of 90s R'n'B a lot. Everyone who says that's crap should listen to the new Kanye West "song" (the one where he ruins Daft Punk). Should help to get the standards right. Though I have to agree that it's not the best track on the album. 8/10

All the Midnights in the World - What a wonderful, sugary melody! Why isn't that longer? 9/10

Chelsea Rodgers - Wow! Wow!!! That's extreme disco funk of the finest! Soulful vocals, horns like acid - I love it. Is it possible to get a 20 min extended version of that (one may dream)? Hope that's going to be played on August 25th in London - and I'll move my fat pale white ass to it!!! headbang 10/10

The Lion of Judah - I would rate that as a grower. Nice pop/rock sound again. 9/10

Resolution - The lyrics are a bit silly (more on the Band Aid kind of level), but the music is very nice. Don't know though if I would rate it as the perfect album closer. 9/10

Overall impression - A quite cohesive album, about half of the tracks has a guitar-based pop/rock sound somehow reminding me of the Gold era, plus some nice soul/R'n'B stuff plus a disco funk burner! And a bit of Revolution nostalgia. Very strong! Only drawback: some tracks could/should be longer. Was some stuff edited to make it more of a pop effort rather than a fan base oriented record? Anyway: very enjoyable! 9/10

I just simply do not understand how anyone could rate this album 9/10, prince fan or otherwise.

Have you actually ever heard any other music recently, this album is terrible!

someone made the point that the likes of Justin Timberlake are putting out better tracks, and it saddens me to agree, and thats not to say that I rate Justin Timberlake, I'd rather stick needles in my ears than listen to one of his albums in it's entirety.

It's very simple: different strokes for different folks.

Just a question: I just assume that you have listened to the album in its entirety. You say you'd agree that JT puts out better tracks, but then also that you'd rather stick needles in you ears than listen to one of his albums. So what have you done to your ears to make it through "Planet Earth"?

I've now listened to an actual cd and I must say, this is pretty rubbish on Prince's part. It has a few good tracks and I still think Chelsea Rodgers is a good cut and will hopefully make some kind of single, as well as be a showcase live cut, but as a whole, it is his weakest, most uninspired album possibly of his career.

Very, very bland and passe'.

Lion of Judah and Resolution have to be the fluffiest things he's ever recorded.

If you're thinking the actual cd will reveal nuances, you are GRAVELY mistaken -- this record is as deep as a 14 year old Smiths fan.

More off the cliff, sky is falling posts on an album that hasn't even been in your hand for more than 10 days...LOL...Come on Wall, Planet Earth, the worst Prince album of all time? Not even close...I think Rave fits the bill...Folks that are reviewing this album 9 out of 10, also have their own opinions, albeit very suspect...

My view: Planet Earth is a cool little album that should be taken for what it is ...That's the probloem with the Org...Everyone works off of extremes...Either Planet Earth is his worst (Wall) or a 9/10 release (according to some medically-impaired folks...)....It's not that serious on either side of the fence...

The problem with marks in terms of points is that you don't know the standard people usually apply. For me, a 10/10 means "instant classic", while the 9/10 means "very enjoyable". Other folks will say that "enjoyable" alone does not make more than a 6/10 in their book. What that has to do with "medically-impaired" - well, the standards for online manners seem to decrease here recently...

I'm still very disappointed with this. I've had the leaked version for over a week now and I really can't get into it. I'm not in the UK so I haven't heard the album in good quality. I'm probably gonna buy this and I'm hoping that the good quality version of the album makes me appreciate it more, but I dobut it. I think this album is more of a "yo, I'm alive and perfroming in Lonodon. Come and check me out, then in 2008 I'm gonna drop a real album, but until then here is this demo record I decided to have engineered and mastered."

Lion Of Judiah
- 7 Out of 10 - Could be the grower. Great rock pop, without being too commercial. Love the vocal styles. You'll like this if you like "Money Don't matter 2 nite".

The Lion of Judah....yet another religeous song form Prince wrapped up in a pretty pop package most of the folks on this forum that hate when Prince says anything religion oriented don't even know it becuase they are so ignorant

In any case my only problem with the song Lion of Judah is his vocals. This song is about having strength and detrminationa and faith...yet Prince is singing in this girly weak almost frail voice until of course until the end of the song...where he starts singing in his normal register. Talk about an opportunity missed to reach folks outside of the "Prince" world

oh yeah and this song is nothing like Money Don't Matter Tonight...except the vocal or the way hes siging....Othersiwe the song can't be more disimilar
