My opinions on this subject.

Planet Earth --> Could it be magic:
Has it never occured to someone here that he has used that piece of music on purpose? Prince has used elements of songs from others on earlier songs, like Seven and Billy Jack Bitch, and did give the writers of those songs credits for that in his liner notes.
So, if he used lines from Barry Manilows songs on purpose, i really expect Prince to be 'paying' for the use of that lines.

Guitar --> I will follow
The riff might remind some people about 'I will follow', but first: Prince doesnt play the same notes as the edge does, and second, the delivery by Prince is different then that by the edge. U2's guitarist plays the notes in a new-wave rock kind of way, while Prince is delivering in a more 'black' Jimi-like manner. So, no, Prince wont get sued for this.

Chelsea Rodgers --> Around the world
Its the same type off funky disco-riff, but the notes are not the same. At the end of the seventies / beginning of the eighties a lot of bands were using this same sort of bass-riff, but that doesnt mean Prince is copying Daft Punk.

Yo, if I ever get married(probably never) I'll Write a Song For You will be the first song we(whoever she will be) will dance to.
Favorite song by E,W&F.

lol

Have you seen them live, lately? STILL AWESOME! While I love me some Prince, ya gotta also give Philip Bailey his props. The man is even older than Prince and still hits every single note. GREAT LIVE SHOWS. Go see 'em!

Saw them in St. Lucia at the annual Jazz Festival late last year, loved every minute of their performance. I guess real Prince fans should go see them too and find out where the inspiration for songs like Adore, Slow Love etc. came from.

yup. it is. i don't care what the legal issues are but that part of the
bridge just ruins the song for me.

it starts out so nice and then you get to the middle and i just can't
concentrate on the song anymore it's like the channel changes to some
shitty pop radio playing "could it be magic" until the next verse and
the guitar swelling come up and it's "planet earth" again.

sucks all the momentum out of the song imo.

The same here! I totally agree with you! nod

Title track - awesome song, but the break in the middle uses "could this be magic" by Barry Manilow.. its not 100% exact, but it is so damn similar that I was thinking to myself when I first heard this... Ive heard this before!!

I'm less concerned about Prince getting sued and more concerned with you being familiar enough with Barry Manilow songs to know that a Price song sounded like it.

falloff
How many songs have ever been written? How many musical notes notes are there in the world? There are only so many different permutations possible, there is inevitably crossover somewhere along the line. Let's face it Oasis have based their entire career on that principle & they seem to be doing OK.

Ive listened to some of the tracks from Planet Earth, and the best songs (title track and Chelsea Rodgers) seem to be lifting from other people's material. Of course I havent seen the actual album yet so dont know if he has credited others, but..

Chelsea Rodgers lifts the bass link from Daft Punk, "Around the World". I know he probably didnt mean to do that, but this is no defence in a court of law... (Unless he credits Daft Punk of course smile)

Lastly, I hear on Lion of Judah a guitar riff (and sound) exactly the same as the Police, I think it's "Walking on the Moon" in the background.. if its not its really similar.. Once again he probably didnt know he lifted it when he wrote it.. This one is even harder to prove because its a 3 chord riff, its just that the guitar sound is also really similar, the effects, etc..

anyway I just wanted to get that out!

Dude please. Go get a hobby.

- Why get a hobby? He is right. I would love songs like ´Chelsea´ and ´Guitar´ much more if they werent so similar to daft Punk, U2 and Beatles. The ´could be magic´ part should be credited.
